Clinique Skin Supplies for Men: One of the Most Extensive Lines for Men

Clinique Skin Supplies for Men
Backed by Estée Lauder, cosmetics powerhouse Clinique has both the resources and the pedigree to create some of the world's most popular skin care products. Little wonder that Clinique Skin Supplies for Men is a Luxist nominee in the best men's skin care line category.

Clinique has seemed destined to succeed ever since its auspicious beginnings in 1968. In the prior year, as the legend goes, Estée Lauder's daughter-in-law read an article in Vogue that suggested great skin could be created simply by maintaining a proper daily skin care routine. She showed the piece to her mother-in-law, who quickly recruited authors Carol Phillips and Dr. Norman Orentreich. By the end of the following summer, the Clinique brand was born, debuting at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Today, Clinique's offerings encompass skin care, fragrances and other cosmetics for men and women. The company's men's line is among the most extensive in the world, boasting a staggering array of grooming products including shampoo, shower gel, lip balm, deodorant, cologne, and an expansive skin care line.

Clinique Skin Supplies for Men includes concoctions for general skin health and for very specific situations. For men who eschew disposable razors in favor of their modern counterpart, there's the electric shave primer (3.4 oz: $15.50). For those who prefer the more traditional method of removing facial hair, there's the post shave smoother (2.5 oz: $17). As ever, all are still available at Saks Fifth Avenue and other fine retailers.

Vote for the men's skin care line that you believe is the best of breed. The voting period runs through May 31st and winners will be announced on June 1.

The Best (and Worst) Anti-Aging Foods

healthy eatingEverybody wants to look and feel young, healthy, and vibrant, but unfortunately our lives don't always make achieving that goal easy. Stress, pollution, activities, and even the food we eat can affect how fast and how gracefully we age. Are you making diet choices that will keep you looking young?

The best anti-aging foods:
  • Berries like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries are especially high in Vitamin C that helps to reduce wrinkles and age-related skin dryness, fiber that boosts heart health and helps maintain a healthy weight, antioxidants that fight against environmental and dietary toxins, and polyphenols that are thoughts to battle age-related mental decline.
  • Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and swiss chard have high levels of Vitamin K that helps keep bones strong and lutein and zeaxanthin that together keep vision sharp by protecting eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light.
  • Whole grains such as whole wheat, brown rice, and oats are full of a wide variety of nutrients and minerals that help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and even gum disease. Whole grains are also full of appetite-curbing fiber for help maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Low-fat dairy because its protein can help maintain healthy strong muscles (age-related muscle loss makes you look and feel older) while its minerals can help keep bones strong and blood pressure within healthy limits.
  • Water helps all of the functions in your body, including waste and toxin removal and skin rejuvenation, work better and faster. Dehydration strains body systems but is especially bad for the skin, making it appear dull, less supple, and wrinkles more pronounced.

The Right Way to Get Your Beauty Sleep

beauty sleepBeauty sleep is very real. It's during sleep that skin damage from daily stress and pollution is repaired, dermal layers are rejuvenated, and even facial muscles are relaxed and gravity is shifted so wrinkles become less pronounced. Without enough sleep skin can look sallow and dry with uneven skin tone and more defined wrinkles. Wake up looking your best with these basic tips.
  • Get a head start Make a habit of washing your face and getting the rest of your nighttime beauty routine out of the way well before you're actually ready to go to bed, like a couple of hours ahead of time, so when you're really tired later you won't be tempted to blow it off.
  • Sleep on your back because laying on your side or stomach can literally press wrinkles into your face as you sleep.

The latest skincare craze has hit Neiman Marcus. Quasar Bio-Tech Inc. has announced that Neiman Marcus is sellingthe Baby Quasar. What's the Baby Quasar? It's a skincare device that uses red and infrared light to stimulate the human skin at the cellular level. The treatment is said to build new capillaries and improve the lymphatic system leading to younger, healthier looking skin. Promises include increased circulation, diminished age spots and acne reduction. The Baby Quasar uses four different wavelengths, between 600 and 1200 nm, both red and infrared, to stimulate maximum cellular activity.

Treatments take under a half an hour and the machine can be used three times a week in the beginning. The company says that acne and fine lines start to improve after an average of three to five treatments, with monthly to bi-monthly maintenance treatments thereafter. Many people have seen positive results. The red light for anti-aging is $399 while the blue light for acne sells for $349 at Neiman Marcus.

Sensai's New Hydrachange Series Fights Dry Skin Year Round

kanebo sensaiFinding the right balance between moisturized skin and greasy skin is a constant struggle, especially during the winter months. With most cremes, you have to pile it on in the morning at the risk of getting dry flaky skin, and then risk getting greasy skin come afternoon. Each winter season I find myself experimenting with a new routine of moisturizers to keep my face soft and yet not oily. It's an ebb and flow between dry and greasy that makes me long for springtime skin with every cold city day.

Thankfully the kind folks at Kanebo Sensai recently sent me a preview sample from their brand new line the Sensai Hydrachange Series. Finally, I've nailed down my winter routine with two amazing products that create a balance of moisturizing and plumping. Through their breakthrough "Anti-Aging Hydration," it's a powerful combo to help improve your skin all year round.

Chanel's New Lifting/Firming Skincare Line

Chanel's New Lifting/Firming Skincare LineThe four products in Chanel's new Ultra Correction Lift Collection contain a resin from the Manila elemi tree, often used to heal skin in traditional Chinese medicine. The Lifting Firming Day Cream SPF 15, for example, is described as "lush cream, luxuriously textured and delicately scented, delivers a very soft, matte finish, with ultimate comfort, for a visible lifting effect." So, does the line deliver? I can't say (way out of my price range!), but according to O the Oprah Magazine beauty editor Jenny Bailly, "Don't expect gravity-defying results, but the Lifting Firming Day Cream SPF 15 and the Lifting Firming Night Cream will leave your skin temporarily plumper and firmer." The total of six products range from $85 - $225, including the four Lift Collection items as well a Lifting Firming Day Fluid SPF 15 and a Sculpting Firming Concentrate.

StriVectin - Miracle or Marketing?

StriVectin-SDStriVectin has a line of age-defying products which are being hailed all over the internet as miraculous for stretch marks and wrinkles. It's recently been picked up by Chrysallis, the management team who brought the Canyon Ranch products to fame.

The highly lauded StriVectin-SD is $135 for a six ounce tube and is intended to be applied two to three times daily to "improve the appearance of indented surfaces, smooth surfaces, skin firmness, and irregularities in skin discoloration." There's a full money-back guarantee, and it boasts "significant, corroborated results seen by 93% of subjects tested."

That sounds pretty darn good to me. I don't have stretch marks (yet), so I can't fully "corroborate," but I did indeed try smoothing it all over my legs for a few days. It smells nice; somewhat pepperminty, and once my skin absorbed it, it felt very warm -- apparently this is normal. And here's some good news: while I don't have stretch marks, I do have my share of skin irregularities, especially scarring from rashes that food allergies give me. Did I see improvement? Yes! And far more improvement than with any other lotion I've used. Looks like they might be onto something ... I found other consumers (we hope) in online forums reporting the same issue with the improvement of scars. Also, a number claimed to be using it on their face with good results -- but it is such a thick formula, my oily skin would probably explode if I tried it. That's right. Explode. If you have dry skin, go for it -- the rep who sent it to me for review called it "a stretch mark turned wrinkle cream."

La Prairie Adds Diamonds To Skincare

La Prairie's Skin Caviar Crystalline Concentrate isn't the most expensive product the company has ever launched (after all, last fall saw the launch of a $1,000 moisturizer) but it does give your skin an added shimmer through the addition of diamond, mica and quartz crystals. The nutrient rich serum promises to firm and plump with amino acids, plant extracts, peptides and caviar extracts as well as La Prairie's exclusive Cellular Complex. The serum sells for $375. They say that skincare is recession-proof but this is stretching it.

Dermalogica NYC Store Opening

dermalogica
We all have to be clean and we all want skin that is healthy, soft and radiant. And while there may be little that is exciting or luxurious about skin care, the store opening of Dermalogica in NYC's SoHo is one that instantly grabbed my attention. With their only other US location being in Los Angeles, CA, it was long overdue for the east coast to get its very own store. Located on 110 Grant St, its beautifully designed and roomy interior makes it inviting to enter while a licensed skin therapist will get you started on learning how to care for your skin through personalized five minute skin exams. For a more intimate and in-depth look on your skin, there is a 20 minute skin care service and hour long treatments, try the Skin Pod. This is a private small space to get skin care treatments with customized lighting and music to set the mood you need to relax and feel rejuvenated.

Estee Lauder Plans Drastic Job Cuts

The cosmetics and skincare industry is supposed to be one of the safe spots in a down economy but that doesn't seem to be true any longer. Estee Lauder recently announced a four-year turnaround plan that will result in a six percent reduction in its work force and a freeze on merit pay increases. A total of 2,000 jobs will be cut over the next two years and a hiring freeze is in place. The news comes as Estee Lauder reported a fourth quarter net income that fell 30% to $158 million, or 80 cents a share, from $224.4 million, or $1.14 a share, a year earlier. During the most recent quarter ending December 31, sales of Estee Lauder's makeup brands, which also include Clinique and MAC fell 12 percent while sales of skin-care products fell 7.1 percent.

Pictured above are Hilary Rhoda, Gwyneth Paltrow, Elizabeth Hurley and Carolyn Murphy at the worldwide debut of the new Estee Lauder fragrance 'Sensuous' at Bloomingdale's in New York City last summer.
