Soft Washbowl

Made of soft polyurethane, the Soft Washbowl is an interesting counterpoint to more angular, modern sinks and hard countertops made of materials like metal and granite. The sink was designed by Hella Jongerius for droog design and measures 16" x 12" x 8". It can be attached to the wall as easily as a more conventional sink can be, and would make a nice addition to a child's bathroom due to the material and the fact that it is currently only available in bright blue. Price: $479.

Fruit Sink

The Fruit Sink is a stunning piece from Philip Watts Design. The circular basin sits on the counter, not inset in it. The interior of the basin is chrome plated, giving it a unique shine that sets of the unusual molding at the bottom of the sink. It is that textured base that allows the water to flow smoothly from the bottom of the sink in what otherwise appears to be a perfectly flat-bottomed bowl. With a wall-mounted faucet (not included), this sink would look beautiful in either a bathroom or in a kitchen. Price: £458.25.

Le Bijou Hand-Painted Sinks

Le Bijou's hand-painted sinks can add a new level of personalization to your bathroom. Sinks that feature unusual designs, exotic shapes or are finished in luxury materials, like marble or gold, can give you an elegant look but remain impersonal because they only make a vague statement about who you are. Le Bijou's sinks have designs that range from understated sketches to bold nautical scenes. There is a tropical monkey, a starscape that would be perfect for a child's room, and soft vineyard patterns. There is even a Seabiscuit sink. The designs can all be customized to suit your personality or tastes and the company offers hand-painted tubs to match.

LED Faucet

I'm not one to really care about appliances - so long as they work, but this has got to be the coolest faucet ever.  There's gold plated ones out there and sinks with in-line advanced filtration and such, but do any of them have LEDs built in that make the water glow?  No, no they don't.  Available in either chrome or brushed stainless, the KWC EVE was designed to be an "emotional experience."  I'm not too sure about emotions, but at your next party, guests will certainly play with this enough to bring up your water bill quite a bit.  The lights are in the head, so that even when you pull it out to rinse things off, the illumination keeps going.  I've decided I need one of these.

Titanic Deck Chair at Auction

A deck chair from the Titanic is up for auction at Bonhams & Butterfields. The beech wood chair is one of only six surviving in the world and has the five-pointed star that was White Star's trademark emblazoned onto the headboard. The chair was not snatched off the deck during the last moments of the ship, but was taken as a souvenir by a newspaper photographer, Mr. Thomas Barker, when he did a piece about the ship at its last docking point on April 11, 1912. After the shop sank, Barker wanted nothing to do with the chair and it changed hands several times over the years. It is offered by a private collector. Nothing special in and of itself, as a relic of the Titanic, it is estimated to be worth $75,000 to $100,000.

Futuristic Kitchen by Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid is an architect known for her innovative and deconstructionist designs, which are found throughout the world. During Design Week in Milan, Hadid created a futuristic kitchen setting out of DuPont Corian. The Z-Island kitchen included two main units, one associated with "fire," which housed the cooktop, and one associated with "water," which had the sink and dishrack. In addition to these fairly basic functions, the "sensory- responsive kitchen environment" had multimedia sound and video equipment embedded into the islands, all of which could be controlled with a central touch panel. The modular wall storage featured a coating that gave it "advanced sound and light diffusion capabilities" to enhance the overall experience of being in the room.

LaCava Reflection Sink

If you tend to avoid your own reflection in the bathroom mirror in the morning this is not the sink for you. The Reflection sink from Chicago-based La Cava Design is made of satin stainless steel that gleams like a mirror. The wall mounted double vanity shown here has a wood frame that is available in a choice of wenge, pickled oak or ash gray. It sells for $8,400.

Z Island by DuPont Corian

Is this the kitchen of the future? Innovative architect Zaha Hadid partnered with Corian and Ernestomeda to create the Z Island by DuPont Corian. The kitchen island, which was shown off at Milan Design week, has two free-standing island units, one for "fire" and one for "water," a modular wall cabinet, a wall covering system with special light and sound diffusion capabilities, and a long work bench. The main island unit can change from a  horizontal cooking and eating surface  into a vertical digital surface with an  LCD screen for TV or computer use and an iPod. The cooking area has a special heating plate and the main island has a touch control panel. The wall treatment has acoustic properties and a customized LEDs that allows the user to change the music and lighting. The kitchen island even has a scent diffusion system that can be programmed to dispense different scents throughout the day. Pictures of the Z island in Milan can be found at designws.com.

Gaudi Collection Toilet and Sink

Our pals at Trendir, recently discovered the graceful calla-lily-inspired designs from Capizzi. I was even more intrigued by the Gaudi collection which is a tribute to Antoni Gaudi, the Spanish architect whose exuberant  designs transformed the city of Barcelona. I've seen plenty of unique sinks but not too many toliets with such a freeform curvy shape. The toilet has a custom-made seat and a water-saving design.

Phillip Watts Design Connect Sink

A post on Trendir led me to the unique creations of Phillip Watts Designs. The company specializes in unique products including bubble portholes which are showcased on the Big Brother TV show. Watts also creates aluminum sinks including these Connect sinks made of cast aluminum. The sinks can be linked together or used as a stand alone unit. When used as a single sink, the lug on the lift can be a toothbrush holder while the one on the right serves as a soapdish. The sinks can be created in a variety of colors and sell for £311.38.

Kohler PRO CookCenter, the Sink That Cooks

If you don't feel moving around too much in the kitchen, the Kohler PRO CookCenter is for you. It is a sink that also can handle steaming, boiling and other water-based cooking. The sink also has a cutting board for food prep. It has a list price of $3238.70 and would be great for in a second kitchen or bar area.
