Win A Chance To Be A Glenrothes Whisky Master

glenrothesThis fall, Berry Brothers & Rudd, makers of the Glenrothes single malt Scotch whisky, are offering a unique contest. Four Scotch aficionados will win the chance to work as an official Glenrothes Whisky Maker for a week at the distillery in Speyside, Scotland. The winners will be selected from entrants from around the world and will be hosted by Ronnie Cox, Keeper of the Quaich and The Glenrothes Brand Heritage Director, and The Glenrothes Malt Master, Gordon Motion.

This is a hands-on adventure: participants will do everything from testing the fresh water source that runs alongside the distillery, to milling, mashing, fermenting and distillation. And they'll enjoy some of the more fun parts too including laying down casks for maturation, nosing whisky from maturing casks and selecting exceptional casks to be bottled as The Glenrothes single malt whisky. Each winner will produce their own selection of The Glenrothes, labeled with their own hand-written tasting notes. The adventure also includes a stay at Rothes House, the brand's accommodation for visiting friends and opportunities to take in the Highland flavor, fishing in the local streams, dining in the local Highland restaurants and picnicking in the hills surrounding the distillery. The final day will be spent in Edinburgh with overnight accommodations at The Scotsman Hotel and dinner with legendary Scotch expert, Charlie MacLean.

Entries must be received by January 31, 2011 and the trip will commence on May 8, 2011, lasting for seven nights, ending May 14, 2011. Four winners will be chosen by an independent judging panel. To enter head over to the Glenrothes site and plead your case.

Amrut Launches the Limited-Edition Kadhambam Malt

Indian whisky distiller Amrut has been making a name for itself with its creative experimentation with different wood finishes. Just a couple of weeks ago we reported on their Intermediate Sherry finish, now the Bangalore-based distillery has announced the launch of its limited-edition Kadhambam malt.

Taking its name from the Tamil word for "mixture" (Tamil being one of the languages spoken on the subcontinent), Kadhambam is first aged in Oloroso sherry butts and then Blue Brandy and rum casks from the distillery's own stock for an intriguingly complex flavor.

Only 234 bottles of the malt will be offered, launched at the Potstill Festival in Amersfoort, Netherlands, and distributed exclusively by Dutch tobacconist and spirits distributor Van Wees Holland.

Hammer Head keeps Malt Whisky in Czech

Think of single malt whisky and Scotland usually comes to mind. Maybe Ireland, Japan if you're really with the times. But the Czech Republic?

That's where Hammer Head Malt Whisky hails from, made at the Pradlo Distillery that was built in what was then western Czechoslovakia in 1928. A thoroughly Czech product, Hammer Head – so named for the noisy iron mill used in its production – is made using Czech barely, Czech spring water and aged in Czech oak barrels.

A limited number of barrels were laid down in 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Soviet dominion over Eastern Europe. 20 years of aging later, the Bohemian whisky is now available from World of Whiskies, the extensive British travel retail chain, for £34.99.

Amrut Intermediate Sherry Single Malt Whisky

Transporting the barrels in which malt whisky is typically aged is no mean feat. The casks themselves are often made in the United States or Spain, filled with bourbon or sherry (respectively), then emptied and shipped overseas to the distillery. That's complicated enough when the distillery is in Scotland, but when you're shipping half-way around the world to India it's another story entirely.

That's the challenge which the Amrut Distillery faces when acquiring new casks from Jerez, Spain, and though their single malt whisky has been met with rave reviews, they saw a challenge to overcome. Due to the temperature changes to which the wood would be subjected on its voyage from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean, there was a risk of sulfur accumulating and later damaging the whisky.

Amrut's solution was rather novel. First, they shipped their whisky to Spain and had the coopers roll it around inside the barrel to kill any bacteria. Then the casks were sent to the distillery in Bangalore, but instead of the usual approach of first aging the whisky in bourbon wood and then in sherry, Amrut took a different approach. After finishing the whisky in the sherry butts, they then placed it back into the American oak casks for another year or so.

The result is called the Amrut Intermediate Sherry, a potentially very delicate and flavorful malt just released from the distillery. 85 cases (each containing six 750ml bottles) are earmarked for the US market, each bottle expected to sell for $134.99 in stores.

Oldest Whisky Mortlach
Bottles of the oldest single-malt whisky in the world were unveiled this month at a tasting hosted at Edinburgh Castle. The Scottish 70-Year-Old Mortlach from Gordon and MacPhail has been aging in a Spanish oak cask since 1938 and was described by one taster at the event as "a delicate, fresh, vital, fruity whisky, with unusual attributes of waxiness and smokiness". The limited edition whisky is available in hand-blown, tear-shaped crystal decanters with silver stoppers. There are 54 full-sized bottles and 162 smaller ones available for £10,000 and £2,000 respectively.

There are some opportunities that only come up once in a lifetime – if you're lucky. You may not know them before they present themselves, but you sure will when they have. Experiences like driving a Ferrari around Italy. Dining on the top floor of the World Trade Center. Shaking hands with the President. Or drinking a whisky that's old enough to have been your father.

The good folks at The Dalmore distillery in the Scottish Highlands were kind enough to oblige us on that last one a few weeks ago. And we've spent at least a few minutes every day since trying to figure out how we'd describe the experience to you, our loyal readers. Follow the jump to read how we found it.

Blended Scotch Whiskies

Forbes released an article telling us the detailed background on the history of blended Scotch and what to look for in the crowd this year.  Master blenders recognize the right components to harmoniously marry single malts to grain whiskies which give us blended Scotch whiskies.  An Edinburgh merchant was probably the first to do so in 1853 when he mixed the malt whisky from The Glenlivet with other whiskies to be labeled as Old Vatted Glenlivet, O.V.G.  The merge proved to be less aggressive and soothing then the challenging drink of single malts. This and other blends corroborated that two styles of Scotch whisky was more attractive to the general consumer than when sold separately. Even though some of us snobs might refuse to consider Scotch blends, I suggest you give a try from the short list of current respected blends. When a single malt is not around, from the list, I personally enjoy Chivas Royal Salute 21 Year and the 12 Year, Johnnie Walker Gold 18 Year, and Dewar’s Special Reserve 12 Year. What are your favorite blended Scotch whiskies?
