Satin Evening Mindanao-Print Bag, Handbag of the Day

The Satin Evening Mindanao-Print Bag by Emilio Pucci is a pretty thing with a surprise snap compartment on the bottom that has just enough room to stash a few beauty essentials and includes a vanity mirror. The main compartment is a round satchel with a drawstring closure via double straps in matching silk-print fabric and a silk lining.

I really like it except the mirror on the bottom concerns me -- it's attached to the bag and you have to tip the bag to use it. Won't that spill the contents all over the place? $1,495

SoLace Marbled Silk & Accessories

I first met Barb Polin when the two of us were stationed next to each other at a craft fair. I was showing fine jewelry and she had these gorgeous silk scarves... I basically spent all the money I made that day selling jewelry at Ms. Polin's booth. I should have known better than to actually visit her store, where I'd find more than small accessories -- whole outfits of the most beautiful marbled silk material I'd ever seen. Goodbye, paycheck.

I may have parted with more than I could afford at the time, but it was money well spent. Years later, everything I bought from Ms. Polin's studio, SoLace, is still holding up marvelously. The silk that she uses is extremely lightweight, but also very strong and sturdy, so these clothes are really an investment.

Most of her designs are made from a marbled fabric, which she dyes herself in her studio, making every piece one of a kind. She also marbles leather for accessories like wallets, photo albums, and various types of cases. Clothing styles are available for both men and women, and Ms. Polin has been known to take custom orders. You can browse and buy on the SoLace website, or catch her at a craft fair or in her studio in Elkton, Virginia, where you'll find an even better selection than what you see on her website.

Emilio Pucci Silk Clutch Bag, Handbag of the Day

A clutch is really the only acceptable handbag option when it comes to accessorizing a formal dress for a black tie event because large bags, regardless of how well they match, simply don't look as elegant as small bags do. Emilio Pucci's Silk Clutch Bag is relatively understated for the designer, though it is made of an aqua silk satin fabric. Those missing Pucci's more dramatic patterns will be pleased to find and a multi-colored print lining inside. The vintage-inspired clutch has a matte gold frame with an oversized snap clasp at the top. The clasp's balls are embossed with the designer's name. It measures 8" L x 4" H x 1.5"D. Price: $690.

Should Precious Jewels Be Strung On Shoelaces?

This necklace was the subject of some debate in my house this afternoon. As much as I love the designs of James de Givenchy for Taffin for the most part, this one just seems foolish to me. The necklace, which I spotted in the February issue of W but which also appeared in the October issue of InStyle is a big rubellite tourmaline set with diamond rondels. No problem there. The problem is that it is strung on rope. Silk rope, but rope nevertheless. The necklace sells for $50,000. Does this seem like lunacy to anyone else, to string a gorgeous and very expensive pendant on something that can fray or stain. Something better used for handmade beads or a kicky sterling silver charm. While I understand the cheeky nature of the high/low, of combining the precious with the ephemeral, I think that serious gems are a serious investment and should be treated as such. Stainless steel and diamonds I can live with because at least steel is tough. Can we really imagine this hitting the auction market in 20 years?

The argument in my house? While I was very loudly proclaiming why this was wrong, wrong, wrong and an insult to a stone which took nature years to create, miners great effort to find, and a jeweler time and skill to cut and polish, my significant other went outside, picked up a rock lying in the dirt and said, "It took nature a long time to create this one too." And now you know why I buy my own jewelry.

Warm Up With A Mink Throw

You can't get a much more luxurious blanket than a mink throw. The Sophia Mink Throw from Frette is an ultra-soft, plush blanket made of 100% mink on top and silky 100% silk on the bottom. The silk picks up on body heat instantly without getting itchy, like cashmere or some other materials can, while the mink adds heft to hold in the warmth. It measures 53.1-in. by 14.6-in. Price: $14,000.

Perspective Silk Ties

Designed by Sovereign Beck, a New York-based pair of designers, Perspective Ties are a lovely variation on a traditional striped tie. The ties come in navy and asphalt gray and feature cleverly spaced lines that create a horizon just in the center of the tie. The illusion is subtle, but somewhat mezmerizing, so don't be surprised if you catch someone staring at it - particularly if you're in a dull meeting. It is 100% silk. Price: $90.

The Puffy Shirt

Even though it didn't work on Seinfeld, that hasn't stopped designers from trying to bring back the puffy shirt. Perhaps there is some influence from the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie and they think that there is an underserved part of the population that wants to look like pirates? A traditional button-down shirt is the base for Fendi's Puffy Silk Blouse, complete with front pocket. It is embelished with golden F-logo buttons, a pleated silk tie and puffy three-quarter sleeves, also pleated. Price: $1,690.

Hey There, Sailor

When horizontal stripes can back in style, it was hard to tell if they were going to stick around or have only a short shelf life. They stuck around for a season or so, but as designers moved from winter and spring onto summer, they needed to do something different with the pattern. They went nautical. After all, it's not a big jump from stripes to sailors, when you consider that the traditional sailors' outfits that are played up in films and histories consist largely of navy-and-white stripes.

You can see the look in the summer/fall Balenciaga collection, which had a sailor outfit showcased in Harper's Bazaar, and in the New York Times, which wrote up a piece highlighting the nautical tattoo-inspired designs at Sailor Jerry. For something in between those two style extremes, try an outfit like this Crossback Dress by Nina Ricci. It has the blue and white sailor stripes, but wraps them around the body on a thick ribbon, instead of using the pattern on the dress itself. The white dress is made of silk and is fully lined, with flattering, flowing pleats. Price: $3,290.

A Very Pucci Birthday

As they say, what goes around comes around. And if you’re a fashion designer who has gone, come and gone around again by the time your label is 60 years old, then that’s a birthday well-worth celebrating. The Italian design house, Emilio Pucci, has issued a tank top in celebration of the milestone birthday. Pucci was first made famous by his swirling mid-century silk scarves, which were donned by the likes of Italian film queens such as Claudia Cardinale and Sophia Loren. The white and black top features a stylized screen print of a chic mademoiselle – the very vision of the lady of leisure and sunshine that once typified the “Pucci girl” in the early days of the label. Understated and simple, the stretch cotton jersey tee is matches anything from basic denim to a wilder Pucci print. This tank top is Pucci print for women who worry that they can’t pull off Pucci prints.  Price: $245.

Vera Bradley Limited Edition Kelly, Handbag of the Day

Vera Bradley's line of affordable luxury products makes the design house's widely popular. Buyers in all age groups and income brackets have pushed sales to over $100 million annually. It's a great recommendation for the quality of the products, like this Limited Edition Kelly handbag. The designer started making bags and luggage with quilted cotton, but the Kelly bag is made of bright, patterned silk. The pleated crescent shape and wooden handles give it a fun, retro look and make it both roomy and easy to carry. Inside, the purse is lined with bright pink to contrast with the tropical blue exterior. Price: $69.

India's Eventful Fashion Week

Nothing makes a big, well-publicized event as exciting as a wardrobe malfunction, but I will admit that it is more exciting at a sporting event than a fashion one. With all the costume changes and models running around backstage, trying to fit into samples of various clothing, it isn’t surprising that, from time to time, there will be a malfunction. In India, a recent show seemed plagued with malfunctions and, given the conservative nature of the media and guests in attendance, it created quite a stir.

Personally, I was much more interested in the clothes that were being shown than the media uproar that followed. Indian Fashion Week mega-show featured Indian designers, like Anupama Dayal and Shahzad Kalim and was full of silken, flowing skirts, vibrant colors, corset tops and lots of accessories, including embroidery and lace on the clothing. Dayal’s designs in particular were gorgeous and I have heard that some will be exported to parts of Europe and the US in the coming months. Anyone have any leads on a store, yet?
