Siena Hotel Could Reopen In Reno

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Earlier this year, the Siena Hotel Casino in Reno, Nevada filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and eventually closed its doors. But the hotel could be primed to return. This week it was sold at auction for $3.9 million to a group of investors who plan to reopen it under the same name. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Gregg Zive approved the sale of the Siena Hotel Spa Casino to Grand Siena LCC which beat out two other bidders, Stratus West and Northern Nevada Assets. The Reno Gazette-Journal quotes one of the new owners Jay Meilstrup, who says that the hotel is primed for a comeback. The resort will need a gaming license from the Nevada Gaming Commission and a liquor license to be back in business. The business owed about $50 million to creditors and the money from the sale will go to creditors. The buyers bought the hotel free and clear in a deal that covered the property and everything in it as well as the website.

Il Canto: An Eclectic Menu in a 14th Century Former Convent

Ristorante Il Canto in Siena Italy
One might expect a restaurant housed in a fourteenth century convent to be traditional. But in the case of Il Canto on the outskirts of Siena, Italy, the ambience is the only old-fashioned aspect-the eclectic menu has earned the eatery a Luxist nomination in the best international fine dining category.

Il Canto is the crown jewel of the hotel La Certosa di Maggiano, which became a part of the prestigious Relais et Chateaux in 1978. The restaurant, whose name means "the song" or "the chant," is currently helmed by chef Paolo Lopriore. Born in Italy and trained in Oslo and Paris, Lopriore has a knack for weaving a world's worth of ingredients into a base of traditional Italian food.

Siena Hotel Casino In Reno Files Chapter 11

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

No luck in Reno as the Siena Hotel Casino has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The hotel made the move so that it can stay open and reorganize its debt. The Siena has been months behind on paying its gaming taxes and was at risk of losing its gaming license. It has also been behind on other state taxes and fees. Casino's employees were also dropped from their health coverage because the Siena didn't pay its bills and it owes $400,000 to NV Energy.

Siena owner Barney Ng has invested about $100 million into the Siena since 2000 in both loans and his own capital and has a $50 million loan. In December the hotel and casino property had received a notice of default and threat of foreclosure from its lender and last month the casino closed its table games. The property has a 214-room hotel and employs around 300 people (down from 500 at its peak). It remains open.
