Sendai Shelving

It's practically impossible to get too much shelf space, especially when the shelves themselves can be interesting. Although I do love the big heavy bookcases found in the studies and libraries of old homes, they just don't look very good in any other environment. But items like this Sendai Shelving from The Conran Shop are much more versatile, not to mention less obtrusive and overbearing in the smaller spaces so many of are working with. Designed by the innovative architect Toyo Ito, it's constructed of oil-varnished mahogany and alder with glass shelves. 49"x15"x75.5", $6100.

The Gravity Powered Bookshelf

Bookends can be cute, and they come in all different shapes and sizes, but what if you never needed them again to keep your books straight and standing up in the bookshelf? The Gravity Powered Bookshelf will do just that trick, no matter if you have 10 books, 2 books, or just a lone floppy magazine on the shelf.

The name makes it sound like it's got moving parts or something, but it's really just an interesting-looking bookcase that uses gravity to its advantage. And although I do like it, I also think it looks a little homemade (like in a college dorm room kinda way).

Hedi Slimane Designs Furniture

Photographer turned furniture designer Hedi Slimane's newest endeavor into the world of office furniture is a structured and geographical one. Using ebonized stainless steel, his creations include desks, chairs, and shelves that use a pattern of angles, squares, and thin lines to create a modern minimalist appearance. Although sleek and beautiful to look at, and sure to make a statement as part of a decorating scheme, I can't say they look comfortable at all to actually sit on or use. But then, that's obviously not the point.

Hasegawa Wallmount

The Hasegawa Wallmount is a gorgeous shelving installation that could very well qualify as art, were it not for its sheer utility. It can display everything from a library of books to fresh flowers. The wallmount is part of Iola Design's "floating line," as the wall mounting hardware is concealed from view. The unit measures 73"H x 83"W x 10"D. The unit is made of laminated bamboo and is available in three finishes, natural, toasted brown and walnut. It probably wouldn't be too difficult to modify the natural if you really wanted to go with black or white. Price: $1,625.

Bailey Heck Grace Shelf

The Grace Shelf by Bailey Heck is a steel, wood and glass construction that looks utilitarian at first glance, but offers the user more than just basic functionality. The steel supports are slender and unobtrusive when viewed at a distance and there are three types of wood to choose from for the mount: Maple, Cherry and Walnut. The unit measures 16"d x 60"w x 84"h and the shelves can be adjusted to any position to suit your needs. Price: $11,700.

Random Shelving

Words are almost not enough to express how much I like the design of this Random Shelving. The bookcase, which is made from white lacquered fiberboard, has shelves of varying widths and heights that give a display a busy, yet organized, feel. The unusual shelf layout is a more efficient use of the space than on a standard case, so you should be able to fit 50% more books on it without a problem. Each unit is only 32-inches wide (full dimensions: W32 x D10 x H85 in), but grouping the bookcases will allow you to fill a whole wall. Price: $2,250.

JUXTAPOSED: Religion Shelf

JUXTAPOSED: Religion is a bookshelf that is tailored to its contents, making it more of an art installation than just a storage device. It is the first in a series of "curated bookshelves," where the books that it is designed to hold are included with it. Given that the shelf is named Religion, it is not surprising that the texts here are religious ones. They include: the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, the Qur'an, Confucius' Analects, the Tao Te Ching, the Torah and the Discourses of the Buddha. The shelf will have a limited production of 50 pieces. Price: $2,500.

Link Shelving Elements

If conventional shelving doesn't offer the versatility that you're looking for, perhaps modular shelving would be a better option. These Link Shelving Elements are made of molded polypropylene. They are stackable and can be arranged in any number of ways, with any number of units to create as large as (or as small of) a system as you need. The units come in four colors: light gray, olive medium gray, white/ivory, and light green. Each measures 15.75" x 23.5" and extends x 19.5" deep. Price: $150 per piece.

Leaning and Pushing Bookends

I've never had a lot of use for bookends because my books tend to overfill my shelves, leaving neither room, nor need, for things to hold them up. Recently, I installed a new end-less shelf near my desk and started thinking about bookends in a new light, since they would definitely come in handy now. This set of Leaning and Pushing Bookends is a fun one, made of smooth, angular cast metal and strongly reminiscent of the art on the covers of many Ayn Rand novels which, coincidentally, is exactly what I need to prop up. Price: $48.

Suvretta Bookcase

If you imagine this Suvretta Bookcase with full shelves, you can see that it will create a feeling of movement or flow in the books, as each shelf tilts in a different direction. The pre-set partitions make it easy to arrange books when your shelves are not full, as well. It is definitely a bookcase that should bet set up in a highly visible area, not banished to the back of the den. The case is made out of printed wood laminate and metal and measures 80 1/4" wide x 79 1/8" high x 13 3/4" deep. Price: $7,280.

Step

In movies, the library shelves always seem to reach from floor-to-ceiling in 25-foot tall rooms and people need to use huge, rolling ladders to move around and locate the book they want. While most homes don't have a library system that is that daunting, floor-to-ceiling shelves are not uncommon and a small ladder or step is not a bad idea. Designed by by Konstantin Grcic, Step is a lightweight set of library steps, about 5-ft. high, that is safe and adds something of a distinguished look to even a simple library. There is a book rest at the top, so you can flip though volumes without climbing up and down. Price: £345 ($645).

How Does Your Shelving Grow

We really like modular furniture and flooring, but modular shelving, like the How Does Your Shelving Grow? set, is definitely one of our favorite manifestations of the trend. Because the shelves are all individual units, they can be arranged to form one solid, conventional looking piece, or scattered to all corners of the room. These shelves are made from steel with a powder coat finish in grey, white or khaki (green). They come in multiple sizes and prices vary depending on both the size and how many units you need.

Intersect Mirror

Mirrors generally get attention for what they reflect, not what they actually look like. The Intersect Mirror from CB2, the funkier counterpart of Crate & Barrel, deserves the attention for itself. The mirror itself is positioned in the overlapping area of two espresso-colored oak frames, which at 8-inches deep, double as shelves for small candles or other objects that you might wish to display. It can also be coordinated with some of the other CB2 frames, like the Milan Mirror, to create very modern, unusual designs for your wall. Price: $179.

Invisible Book Shelf

These bookshelves are shelving and wall art in one. They seem to work by clamping onto the bottom book, securing it into place so that other books can be stacked on top of it, rendering the shelf completely invisible. If your book collection consists of a lot of paperback mystery novels, this may not be the optimal shelving because the display is much more appealing with hardback books. If your decor tends more towards minimalism, or if you already have stacks of display-worthy tomes, this unique design option may be one you want to consider. The shelf can support a weight of up to 15 pounds. Price: 18€
