Sex and the Next City: Marrakech, Morocco

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Make like Samantha, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte and head to Morocco, suddenly the hottest destination on the map. Although Morocco plays Abu Dhabi, UAE, in the movie "Sex and the City 2," which opened yesterday. But never mind that, Morocco has been absolutely everywhere in the last six months. Popping up in Vogue fashion spreads, on the pages of Bazaar magazine (with a spread on jewelry designer Paloma Picasso's Marrakech home), and on travel pages of many a newspaper (The New York Times this month touted Casablanca's contemporary art scene). So what does all this mean?

It's time to head to Morocco.

And the highly anticipated Royal Mansour Marrakech, owned by King Mohammed VI of Morocco, promises to be a hot destination when it opens in July. The King is on a mission to bring 10 million new visitors to his country by the end of this year and it seems that he's off to a good start. This property is made up of 53 different riads. The traditional Moroccan-style homes with center courtyards were each built by craftsmen, filled with traditional tiles and textiles and furnished with antiques to showcase the best of Moroccan design. The resort's eight-acre property is speckled with ancient trees (some dating back 400 years) and is located centrally in the medina, or old town area of Marrakech with views of the Atlas mountains in the distance. Three restaurants on the property will be overseen by three-Michelin-stared chef, Yannick Alléno of Paris' Le Meurice and a 27,000 square foot spa promises to wow. Rates start at $1,850 a night. No doubt Carrie and crew would have stayed there had it been open.

Biotherm Homme: Miraculous Powers of Soothing and Rejuvenation

Biotherm Homme
Many of the world's most successful skin care lines boast impressive creation myths, perhaps none more so than Biotherm. For both its heritage and profusion of products, Biotherm Homme has earned a Luxist nomination in the best men's skin care line category.

High in the mountains of France nearly half a century ago, an intrepid biologist chanced upon something quite unusual in the abundant waters of a thermal spring: a type of plankton with miraculous powers of soothing and rejuvenation, as the story goes. After many years and a great deal of research, the purified ingredient, called Vitreoscilla Ferment, was patented for use in skin care.

Today, Vitreoscilla Ferment is at the core of Biotherm's offerings. The company's men's line, Biotherm Homme, includes full-body options like Aquafitness, a shower gel for body and hair (6.7 oz: $21) as well as face-specific Aquapower, a moisturizer made specifically for dry skin (2.5 oz: $28).

Biotherm isn't just for European thermal bathers. The company's recently introduced former Law & Order star and Sex and the City icon Chris Noth as its new face, complete with an online video shoot. Those interested in emulating Mr. Big can check out "Chris' Pick," a reactivating anti-age gel called Force Supreme, on Biotherm's website.

Vote
for the men's skin care line that you believe is the best of breed. The voting period runs through May 31st and winners will be announced on June 1.

Skyy Vodka Creates Sex and the City 2 Bottle

sex and the city 2 skyy vodka

You can add another name to the promotional credits for Sex and the City 2, but we give them credit for this one – what other movie would have its own official vodka? The return of Carrie and crew will also mark the return of a special edition Skyy bottle lending its cobalt blue imprimatur to "sophisticated cocktail culture around the world."

Meant to return the idea of "cocktail couture" to your evenings out, Sex and the City costume designer Patricia Field is cast in the role of spokesperson and bottle designer. She's drawn up the first themed bottle in Skyy's history, and select establishments will carry "limited edition fashion and cocktail accessories" by her hand. It is anyone's guess what those could be, but keeping the Manhattan quartet in mind you'll probably be able to simply refer to them as "those little glamorous things." The partnership will mark the second time you'll be required to wear something labeled 'Manolo' to have a sip of vodka.

kim cattrall The "Sex and the City 2" tie-ins just keep coming. Hotels are busting out the themed packages and brands like Möet & Chandon Champagne will appear in the movie and sponsor special events. But my favorite tie-in comes from jewelry designer Wendy Brandes whose snaky gold shoulder-grazing Cleopatra earrings appear on Kim Catrall (Samantha) in the movie. According to Brandes' blog if you want the exact pair of gold and diamond Cleopatra earrings from the movie, they will be available at Broken English Jewelry in Santa Monica, California. You can buy an un-Catrall worn pair for $7,250 from the Wendy Brandes website or pick up a silver version for $450.

The Fashion Statement: SJP, Creative Director at Halston?

Sarah Jessica Parker is reaching for Halston, but we're not talking the white dress from the spring 2010 collection she wore in the trailer for Sex and the City 2 (pictured above).

The Internet was buzzing yesterday that the actress is following in Lindsay Lohan's Ungaro footsteps and becoming creative director or design director -- or at least a design consultant -- for the storied New York label. Apparently, SJP is no longer just the face of Halston -- she became the face back in September -- but will be taking a more active design role in Halston Heritage, a recently launched secondary collection whose look harks back to the house's glory days of the '70s. There is word she'll take an equity stake, too.

None of this could be confirmed late last night, but no matter. People are excited.

"Considering SJP's impeccable taste, this is sure to be a successful collaboration," gushed one blog.

It's true that Parker has designed before. She created the line Bitten for Steve & Barry, the now shuttered cheap and chic retail chain. But as much as I love SJP (she's one of the nicest people I've ever met in my 15 years in Hollywood), let's not forget that when we refer to Sarah Jessica's impeccable taste, we are mostly referring to the way she looks in the Sex and the City franchise. And those looks are courtesy of costume designer Patricia Field.

Still, SJP wears anything well and it's a smart move for Halston. Having the actress, who's become synonymous with New York fashion, on board will give the beleaguered brand some badly needed press. But where she will ultimately take the line is anybody's guess.

Halston hasn't had it easy lately. In fact, it's been called the "Halston curse."

Since the designer Roy Halston Frowick's death of AIDS-related causes in 1990, Halston has had at least eight owners and six designers, including Randolph Duke, Kevan Hall and Bradley Bayou. Then, in the fall of 2008, an unlikely team had a go: movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, Jimmy Choo's Tamara Mellon and Hollywood stylist Rachel Zoe. The team picked Marco Zanini as creative chief. I remember seeing Zanini's first season in the Halston showroom in New York in February of 2008 and I thought it was disappointing. Sure enough, Zanini was gone a few months later. Subsequent collections have been designed by a team.

When you look back at old pictures of Jackie Kennedy's pillbox hat, Bianca Jagger dripping in gold lame or Lauren Bacall in a long cashmere dress, you can't help but think Halston's sitting on a goldmine!

Can SJP break the Halston curse?
