Harveys Seatbelt Bags for Disney Couture, Handbag of the Day

I've written about Harveys Seatbelt Bags on Luxist because I love them. But, one can argue they're not the most traditionally glamorous bags, even if they are different, fun, and functional. But let's say you're a Disney fan, and you like an interesting handbag, and the word "couture" grabs you. Good news! Harveys introduces the Seatbelt Bag for Disney Couture, a website-only special collection in four styles.

Each bag is loaded with Disney details, such as a Mickey ears zipper pull, Mickey charms, custom red Disney lining with a monogrammed Harveys Logo and Mickey ear silhouette, and a comic-strip printed seatbelt body that tells the story of how Mickey seeks to capture Minnie's attention by serenading her. Also featured: black nickel hardware, a Harveys for Disney Couture plaque, interior pockets (one for cell phone), an interior keychain hook, and a drawstring storage bag. Harveys Seatbelt Bags Boutique Collection

You might be thinking that "seatbelt" and "luxury" aren't synonymous, unless you're talking about a car. Then you must not know about Harveys Seatbelt Bags. These bags are great -- durable, practical, fun, functional, and available in lots if colors. But still not luxury, until now. Harveys recently debuted its Boutique Collection, branching out into more elegant styles and even doing a bag in leather instead of the traditional seatbelt. There are six new collections within Boutique: Vertigo, Leather, Herringbone, Carriage Nickel, Carriage Gold, and Accessories (see the gallery for examples of each). I love the Carriage Medium Tote Nickel, and plan to order one this weekend. Prices range from $34 for a key chain that holds a picture to $498 for the Carriage leather bag; free ground shipping.

Alchemy Goods messenger bag

In the spirit of Marcel Duchamp -- who turned a urinal into one of the twentieth century's most famous works of art simply by signing his name on it -- Seattle's Alchemy Goods is turning junk into bling.

Alchemy, as all fashionistas who paid attention in Western Civ know, was the Middle Ages' primary fascination: the quest to turn something worthless (lead) into something precious (gold).

Alchemy Goods designer Eli Reich takes this basic theme and runs with it. He scavenges the bike shops and junkyards of the Pacific Northwest and produces some very cool bags. From the bike shops, he gets old inner tubes and builds tough, waterproof sacks that are guaranteed for life. From the junkyards, he gets old seatbelts that become the straps for his bags.

The best part? He keeps all the writing, patches, stains and logos that were orginially on the tubes and seatbelts. That way, you know you've got a one-of-a-kind.

It's $148 for a messenger bag, by the way. Can medieval alchemists compete with that?
