Moshiko Sculptural Rings

All jewelry designs are works of art, but these Sculptural Rings from Moshiko take it to the extreme. Made of various crazy combinations of sterling silver and colorful resin, the inspirations for the designs range from ancient African art to mathematics to futuristic themes. Each ring is unique, signed by the artist, and only available in whatever size it was already made in (the sizes vary, see the site for specifics).

I think these rings are absolutely beautiful to look at but I'm not sure they're realistic (or comfortable) to actually wear. $200-$500

Jeff Koons, Art Collector

I've talked a lot about Jeff Koons as an artist but what about Jeff Koons, art collector. The artist, whose monumental work, Hanging Heart, brought in $23.4 million at auction last fall, is also an avid collector and his taste might surprise you. The baby-faced artist, who traffics in large works of kitschy pop, puts some of his earnings back into the art market spending big on the traditional masters. The Art Newspaper reports that Koons paid $6.3 million at Sotheby's in New York for a the work shown at right, a large limewood carving of St Catherine, dating from around 1505, by German 16th-century sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider. He is also said to be the lender of an 1866 Gustave Courbet nude to the Metropolitan Museum's current exhibition on the French artist. He bought that painting last June at Sotheby's for around $3.2 million. It's sort of comforting to know that while Koons is benefiting from the booming art market he's also having to pay the same exorbitant prices that everyone else is facing right now.

Bernar Venet Sculpture Exhibition

One of Florida's more elite private golf and country clubs is the setting for a unique sculpture exhibit. Sotheby's will present an exhibition of a single artist, the renowned sculptor, Bernar Venet, on the grounds of the Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Windermere, Florida, outside Orlando from January through April 2008. There will be 25 sculptures, many of which are for sale. The sculptures range in size from six to 35 feet and were executed by Venet at a foundry and ironworks in the Vosges mountains.

Porter Garden Telescope

Last month we picked up on an article in the NY Times on how observatories are a new trend in many luxury homes. An outdoor alternative is the beautiful Porter Garden Telescope from Telescopes of Vermont. The cast bronze reflecting telescope is a bit of astronomical history, it was designed in the 1920s by astronomer and scientist Russell W. Porter. The telescope has a working sundial and the mirror and eyepieces of the telescope can be removed and stored in a custom mahogany box so the telescope can stay outside all year long. Each one is individually cast, hand-finished bronze and stand 70" overall including the marble pedestal. It sells for $59,000.

Sunburst Sculpture

Jonathan Adler has apparently got quite a thing for the sculptures of C. Jeré, and so he's collaborated with the C. Jeré studio to reissue some of the most popular designs of old. Previously I posted on the Raindrops sculpture, and now one of my other favorites: Sunburst. Like the Raindrop, this sculpture is also made of antiqued brass. It's a bright addition to any space and captures the essence of the sun in a unique and very vibrant way. This sculpture needs a large space, though, or I'm sure it will easily overpower the room. $1,100

Steel and Stone Cello Sculpture

Talk about a unique combination of materials, this Steel and Stone Cello Sculpture is created out of (yep, you guessed it!) steel and river stones. It's an amazingly life-like, free-standing, and full-sized rendition of the instrument complete with a copper-stringed bow. The fact that it's only the outline of the instrument keeps it a light and airy piece without sacrificing any of the the musical essence the artists (Nerio Festa and Heidi Hummler) wanted to capture. Can be placed indoors or out, made in California. $3800

Infusion Art Glass Sculptures

I'm one of those people that really buys into the way something is described, and I love how these Infusion Art Glass Sculptures are explained as "juicy drops of color trapped in ice." That's really perfect! Created by Jamie Harris, special glass blowing and carving techniques are used to mold colored and clear glass pieces together for a light-catching artistic result. Available in 3 sizes and a variety of color combinations you're sure to find either the single perfect one for your home -- or buying a group and displaying them together would be great too (that's what I would do, I don't think I could decide!). $1600-$2200

Raindrops Sculpture

At first glance, if I didn't know the name of this sculpture, I don't think "raindrops" would come to mind. But knowing that was the inspiration suddenly I totally see it, and it seems very alive with depth and color. Plus it almost appears to be in motion. The result of a partnership between Jonathan Adler and C. Jeré studio, this newly reissued Raindrops Sculpture is made of antiqued brass, is signed and dated (of course), and measures about 66"x34"x10". $1500

Poodle Butts by J Schatz

Behold the Poodle Butt. That is all it is - a glossy pink sculpture of a poodle's posterior. It doesn't light up or play music, but it most certainly will start a conversation. From the same mind that brought us the Buff Humpty Night light, this handcrafted ceramic poodle butt is perfect for those who appreciate a little humor in their home decor. From the J. Schatz Limited Edition Collection, this one answers to Malibu. If a pink poodle butt doesn't go with your color scheme, consider one of her other-colored friends - Luscious, Cocoa or Snowflake. These whimsical table-top sculptures measure 13" high by 13" wide by 10" long. $525.

Boehm Bucking Bronco

Art is all about evoking emotions and feelings, and in some cases capturing a moment or an action that means something to somebody. And if this piece, the Boehm Bucking Bronco, doesn't capture action and emotion then I don't know what does. Of course it depicts very specific subject matter that may not appeal to everybody, but there's no denying how lifelike and detailed it is -- you can almost hear the horse snorting just by looking at it. Handcrafted and hand-painted porcelain in shades of brown, tan and white, it measures 26"H x 20"W x 22"D. $20,000

Flaunt What You Got with a Money Sculpture!

Even though the latest trend for the rich is "stealth wealth," there are bound to be those out there who just can't help but flaunt what they've got. One way to do it is to get yourself a money sculpture, or I suppose you could make your own if you have an artistic bend towards paper mache. You can easily customize it by using any dollar denomination you want (it cracks me up that this one is made of $1 dollar bills) and hey, if you're a little short on cash and don't want to hit the ATM you can just peel off a few bills and be good to go.

NatureMaker Steel Art Trees

Check out the cool tree here, it's the latest one-of-a-kind sculpture from NatureMaker which creates steel art trees. This one, "The Oldest Living Bristlecone Pine," was installed in the atrium of a private home in San Diego County. The company specializes in creating replica trees that are life-size and have intricate detail in the leaves and bark. NatureMaker trees can be seen at resorts, museums and commercial buildings as well as private residences. This tree is 15 feet high with the canopy of branches stretching 15 feet across. No two trees are alike and the trees can also include light and sound.

Clover by Ron Arad

Some pieces of furniture just strike a person as darling, and this is one of them. Clover, designed by Ron Arad, is a small armchair sculpture in the shape of a four-leaf clover. Simple, pure, and fluid, this white polyurethane monobloc is manufactured by Driade in Italy. I usually complain when there's a lack of color choices, but I think this one is just perfect in white. It's described as organic and sensual, though I see it as more whimsical than anything -- how could you not feel like a Thumbelina character sitting in it?

New Wave Line Room Dividers

Is it a work of art or a room divider? Of course it can be both, and what a nice way to combine art and function together in an almost unnoticeable way. Designed by Susan Woods for Aswoon™/Susan Woods Studio and formed by bending plywood, New Wave Line Room Dividers can be custom made in a variety of shapes, sizes, and finishes. In addition to sculpture-like room dividers, New Wave Line also features seating and tables, with one of my favorite items being this Ribbon Float lounge chair.

The room divider pictured is called the Vertical Wave and measures 83" x 37" x 12".

The Node Bowl

Designed by Kevin Williams for the Brooklyn design house CAKE, the Node bowl is just as happy in your kitchen as it is being displayed as a simple sculpture. And call me practical, but it actually looks like a great place to keep fruits and vegetables, because I like a bowl stacked high and the spaces will let the pieces on the bottom breathe. But of course filling it up interferes with the "light and shadow effect" the artist was going for, so maybe just one or two pieces, like in the photo, would be better. Anyway, it's made of ceramic, and is available in white only. Measures 3.5"D x 11.75"Diam, $50.
