Cottage & Bungalow Folding Screen

When I think of folding screens, I envision them in a large luxurious loft defining spaces and adding depth and texture. And of course they are extremely functional in large spaces, but they can be just as functional in smaller spaces. Featured here is Cottage & Bungalow's Folding Screen made of solid cane and woven rattan. It has a truly eclectic feel and depending on your personal style, could easily take on any look you want – modern, tropical, classic American, etc. The folding screen would look exquisite in front of a window or in an otherwise boring corner. And by adding a voluminous plant, you've added a hint of color and texture. Seen here in dark chocolate, it is also available in a wide assortment of colorful options. Measures: 60" W x 72" H. Price: $1340.

Farm 21 Rye Straw Screen

A world away from the last screen I covered is this screen which brings together the rustic and the modern in a unique way. The screens from Farm 21 feature rye straw cast in resin and acrylic. The screen has three panels which creates a 70-inch high divider which is five feet wide. It sells for $6,000.

The design is just one of the designs from Sasha Sykes of farm21. She gets much of farm21's organic material (straw etc.) from her family's farm in County Carlow, Ireland. Her original concept of plexiglass cubes packed with various straws and mosses and flowers has been expanded into tables and lamps. Another interesting project involved a wood table which has an over half carat diamond in the center.

Microsoft Surface

OK people, here it is, the iPod of 2020 - the Microsoft Surface. Although slightly less portable than everyone's favorite gadget today, Microsoft is rigorously positioning its concept device for the kind of widespread consumer - and commercial - craze that only Apple have been able to drill up. As you can see from their flash video, good ol Gates and Co want every last one of us to be able to use this touchscreen surface to do everything - from consumer applications like organizing and sharing photos, music and video - to consumer uses like in-restaurant ordering and bill paying.

If you're as awed by this as we are, check out the hands-on demo over at Engadget!

Watch a Movie from Any Direction (It's a Reversible Screen!)

For the home theater buffs out there, here comes the ultimate in big screen gadgets: a screen and projector that let you view the image from both sides.

Harmony Interiors of Asheville, N.C., originally created this reversible-image home theater system for a "golf dream home" in a prestigious Asheville community. Once they modified the screen and projector appropriately (both which, by the way, retract into the ceiling when not in use) they set it up so the image could either be viewed from inside the house in the cozy enclosed porch, or from the putting green outside with the simple push of a button.

Care to go outside and putt a few in while we watch the movie on the bigscreen? Sure!

Thanks Rachel!

The Most Stunning Room Screens

It's hard to pick the "best" items when it comes to decor because personal tastes can cover such a wide range - not that this stops most list-makers - but when Elle Decor put together their top picks for room screens, they stayed away from the label. They simply called all of their choices stunning, which they are. The screens range from a Pacific island inspired mahogany piece to one made of industrial-looking steel rings and from the expensive to the more affordable. Whether one of their choices will turn out to be the best for you remains to be seen, but they are all certainly worth a look.

Cuboglass

With all the great flat-panel televisions, most of which seem to have high-definition screens, that we've seen in the past couple of months, is anyone ready to go back to something a little more three dimensional? The Cuboglass is an unusual TV that is built into a black, nearly-cubic case. When the TV is on, you can see it clearly through the case, but when it is off, the unit does not bring to mind a TV and you might not even guess that it was a piece of electrical equipment at all, were it not for the cord extending from the back. It is 15" x 13.5" x 15" and comes with the aluminum flight case pictured below it. Price: $1,191.

Piasa Room Divider

Made with sustainably harvested wood tiles that are woven together with cotton rope, the Piasa Room Divider is environmentally friendly, as well as gorgeous to look at. The screens were designed by Emiliano Godoy and all are hand made to your specifications, whether you want a screen that is 6 feet long or 30 feet. The sample shown here is about 3 meters long, which gives you a good feel for the size of the panels. It is available in beech (pictured), pine or maple. Price: $6,040 and up, depending on size.

Mebel Pivot Screen

Screens are a great way to divide a large space into smaller rooms, or simply create a more private section of an office or bedroom. The Pivot Screen by Mebel Furniture doesn't provide the complete concealment, but it looks far more interesting than completely opaque screens do. The acrylic panels in each of the interlocking tiles - which can be added on to easily to create the desired size for your space - are removable, so you can change the colors and even the degree of transparency as often as you wish. Mebel specializes in using eco-friendly materials and the wood used for all of their pieces comes from certified sources that maintain sustainable forestry practices.

The price of the screen as it is pictured is $3,895, but the total will vary depending on the number and type of tiles, as well as the wood and the color of the stain.

Material Furniture Flipper Screen and Shelving

Multi-tasking furniture allows you to really maximize the use of space in your house. Though you can't claim it as extra square footage when you're selling, a piece with more than one function can easily double the utility of the room it's in. In the case of the Material Furniture Flipper Screen, it can divide a room and, with a simple flip, can unite it. Circular cut outs on the screen turn out at 90-degree angles, creating extra shelving on which to store or display just about anything you can think of. It's also a great way to serve appetizers or other snacks during a party. The screen is made of either maple or walnut and has a clear satin finish. Each of the three panels measures 24x72-inches. Price: $1,800.
