Ferragamo Launches "Bio-Friendly" Men's Shoe Line

Italian luxury fashion brand Salvatore Ferragamo is launching a new line of bio-friendly men's shoes called Ferragamo WORLD, with a portion of the proceeds going to Acumen Fund, a global non-profit venture firm addressing poverty in South Asia and East Africa. The new collection designed to be casual, sophisticated and functional, drawing on the Ferragamo tradition of "stylistic sophistication, craftsmanship and comfort". The aesthetic is "Italian City Casual", a bit less formal than Ferragamo's core offerings, inspired by Italy's traditional way of life.

The line is evocative of relaxation outdoors, of long walks in the city, of bicycles as an alternative means of transportation, of attention to detail and of a comfortable and wearable elegance. The collection consists of six models in select leathers with a rubber sole: desert boots, moccasins with or without signature hardware and sporty models with a college and tennis feel. Clean lines incorporate a comfortable step guaranteed by the unique structure of an ergonomic sole made of bio-friendly, decomposable material. The leathers use the latest generation water tanning processes and water based adhesives are also used which minimize any kind of harmful waste.

Who likes short shorts?

Apparently everybody, as evidenced by the number of cropped breeches seen on the catwalks and red carpet recently. Ciara, Gwyneth, Nicole and a host of other celebrities have taken shorts out for a spin on the crimson. It doesn't seem to matter much whether it's cold outside or not. In fact, it was bitingly cold during fashion week in New York in February when Kylie Minogue decided to grace the front row in shiny black vinyl shorts.

Shorts have been around for centuries, of course. The descendants of kilts and togas, they were the look for young school boys. Soldiers stationed in hot places like Bermuda adopted the look for relief from the heat which then quickly influenced civilians. Women followed later. Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O. were often photographed in shorts.

Once only appropriate to wear starting this weekend (Memorial Day) through Labor Day, cut to today and the look is so prevalent almost every designer inserted a pair of shorts in his or her fall/winter collections. A few highlights: If one were to wear shorts on to the North Pole, Chanel had an option-gray fur shorts with furry boots and a patterned ski sweater. Salvatore Ferragamo struck a '70s vibe with rust leather shorts shown under a rust suede maxi coat and brown belted cable knit sweater and further punctuated with rust suede boots and a brown cable knit cap. Dolce & Gabbana had shorts you could wear to a meeting on Wall Street-a mauve boiled wool short suit with the knee length shorts, cuffed and modest.

The Fashion Statement: All in the Family

When it comes to fashion, families rule.

In Manhattan yesterday, Moises de la Renta, son of Oscar, debuted his very first collection, a limited edition T-shirt line called MDLR for a Spanish chain. Moises has been widely quoted for saying his designs meld his father's classic aesthetic with a younger, rock and roll edge. He said he went after traditional romantic themes: "from pretty patchworks with summer flowers in somber colors such as rose, violet, grey and black to graphic illusions which combine transparent effects, with shiny gems and adornments in between." For between $36 to $50, snag an MDLR T-shirt at Mango stores this month.

Famous fashion families seem to be popping up everywhere. Pasadena sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy have zoomed into the fashion stratosphere in a relatively very short time with their Rodarte brand. Actress Sienna Miller and her sis Savannah are having success with Twenty8Twelve. And, of course, there are the Olsen twins with The Row and Elizabeth & James. Mother Tina and Beyonce Knowles run the House of Dereon. And Nathalie Rykiel has been working alongside her mother Sonia for decades.

Just a few weeks ago, Madonna is betting a tween line she's designing with daughter Lourdes Ciccone (called-what else?-Material Girl) will ring the registers at Macy's.

Suri Cruise Has Her Own $850 Handbag

Suri Cruise is getting started early on her designer handbag collection, and (no surprise) so far she has the very same taste as her mother Katie Holmes. Suri was spotted carrying a tiny metallic Salvatore Ferragamo "Sophia" bag (not the bag shown here) recently as she was carried aboard a helicopter in Jamaica by dad Tom. Mom, bringing up the rear, was toting her own larger version of the same "Sophia" design. Color and all.

Yes she's a cutie, and no we don't know the whole story, but is it really necessary to give a little girl a purse worth almost a $1000 when everybody's traveling and in jeans and t-shirts? Maybe if she's going to the Oscars.

Salvatore Ferragamo Gancino Charms Ladies Watch

Produced via license by one of the higher-end divisions of Timex, here is the new Gancino Charms watch collection for women from Ferragamo. I have been saying the "Gancino" a few times out loud and have decided that he name sucks for a watch like this, it probably sucks as a name for most things. Aside from that, the 36mm wide timepiece in steel is available with a number of different gems that can decorate the dial. These natural stones include smokey quartz, rhodolite, citrine, and amethyst. There is also the pictured more expensive version with diamonds. Similar to what other watches have done, there is a Ferragamo charm that dangles off the watch. This is not the crown, which is located elsewhere.. Inside the watch is a quartz movement. The case is available in steel or IP gold coated. Dial is pretty cool with its machine guilloche engraved face and Ferragamo logo. I am sure it will be sold where their shoes are also available. Not sure about prices, but probably going to be appreciably more expensive than it is worth.

The Salvatore Ferragamo Soft Cesar Clutch is a quirky and attractive steel-colored masterpiece.

After a long 2009 of safe choices by most well-known designers, this unusual style from an established house is a welcome surprise. The soft natural-grain calfskin is gently tucked at the corners by striking silver rings. The flap top is accented with Ferragamo's signature Gancini belt and two decorative studs, which balance the subtle swoop of the shape. The steely gray color is the only "safe" thing about this bag -- but with the bull-ring-esque details and demure 6"H x 11"W x 3"D size, the color only ensures versatility.

This clutch is perfect for day or night, and the rings and belt are sure to be noticed. We'd love to see this sexing up a pastel spring ensemble.

This Year's Holiday Shopping Lesson: Lux Goes Online

The web isn't just for bargains. Some of the top luxury lifestyle brands in the world are turning to the internet to beef up their sales -- a must in a market where brick-and-mortar is lagging in the all-important holiday season. Giorgio Armani and Valentino Fashion Group, which have generally steered clear of the prolies shopping online, are changing their attitudes, as they have had to cope with the most severe recession in seventy years. Roberto Cavalli and Salvatore Ferragamo have joined the fray, too, both opening online stores in the past month.

In addition to younger buyers who are more comfortable skipping the store, a sense of "luxury shame" is causing many to turn to the web. The anonymity, once reserved for porn purchases, allows customers to indulge in big-ticket buys without having to endure looks of envy (or worse). If you need proof that luxury spending is going digital, take a look at Italy. This year, online sales of Italian luxury products are expected to surge 42 percent to $500 million, according to a study by Politecnico. Last year, it fell six percent for the luxury goods industry as a whole. In Italy, around 14 percent of holiday shopping will occur ont eh web, according to Deloitte's 2009 Christmas Survey.

The luxury industry's online endeavors are not limited to traditional stores, though Stefano Sassi, Valentino's CEO, notes that the startup costs are lower and that "There's a very interesting margin on e-commerce" as a result. Armani has launched applications for smartphones, including the iPhone and Blackberry and has launched a Christmas website.

James Bond Items on Offer in Pop Culture Auction

Daniel Craig's aviator sunglasses designed by Tom Ford for last year's Quantum of Solace (above) are among a collection of James Bond items in Christie's London's Vintage Film Posters and Entertainment Memorabilia auction on Nov. 24. The shades, estimated at £1,000 - £1,500, are among the more modern 007 mementos in the sale, along with a poker table chair and barstool graced by Mr. Craig's derriere in 2006's Casino Royale, estimated at £1,000 - £1,500. On the vintage front there are some key items from 1974's The Man With the Golden Gun, such as a two-piece black silk evening suit made for Roger Moore for the film, offered at £3,000 - £5,000. Also from that film are the arch villain Scaramanga's custom triggers for the golden gun itself, made in the form of cufflinks which he used to assemble the lethal weapon, estimated at £2,000 - £3,000. On offer as well are a pair of black leather of Salvatore Ferragamo dress shoes worn by Moore in 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me, signed on the inside in gold ink along with a jocular note from the actor, for £800 - £1,200.
