The yacht in which Sir Francis Chichester made history in 1967 by sailing around the world singlehandedly has new owners that will enable it to remain in the U.K. We mentioned in September that the Gipsy Moth IV has been listed for sale for £250,000. The yacht is a 54ft Honduras Mahogany ketch that has been restored to the way she was at the time of the record with modern electronics are hidden behind the original control panel.

The United Kingdom Sailing Academy was selling the boat but the new owners have made a deal that will enable the charity to continue to use the boat to help train young sailors. BBC News reports that the ketch will stay at the Sailing Academy headquarters in Cowes. The charity had bought the vessel in 2004 and raised funds for its restoration. In 2007, a group of young people on board to made a second round the world voyage in 2007, sailing back to Plymouth 40 years to the day after its first 30,000-mile (48,300km) adventure. Filed under: Yachts & Sailing

Italian yachtbuilder Perini Navi, makers of the world's finest sailing yachts including the famous Maltese Falcon, have collaborated with superstar British architect Lord Norman Foster on its latest launch, the 184-ft. Panthalassa (above). Designed specifically for use as an ultra-luxe charter in the Caribbean and Mediterranean with rates beginning at about $300,000 per week, the all-aluminum alloy ketch can reach a maximum speed of 15 knots and has accommodations for up to 12 guests and a crew of 10. Foster + Partners designed the yacht's spaces as a fusion of contemporary living and the finest nautical heritage.

Outside the decks features a variety of places for relaxing and outdoor dining . Flexible, open living areas are the hallmark of the craft's interiors characterized by a lounge, bar, library and boardroom all featuring glazed screens that can be opened to create a generous central saloon. The three decks are connected by an oval stair, which is surrounded by light-reflecting acrylic rods to mirror daylight back into the living areas. Materials include teak, saddle leather and granite table surfaces. Inside the cabins, leather wall paneling complements silk rugs and gold and black marble tiled baths.

High-Tech Composite Superyacht Bristolian

Back in May we wrote about the amazing 49-ft. blacked-out Marten sailing yacht made of carbon fiber. Now New Zealand's Yachting Developments has come out with a superyacht version built along similar lines at 121 ft. Designed by Philippe Briand, the Bristolian is a lightweight, low profile, super-sleek sloop with an ultra-modern lightweight foam core interior, black hull, black carbon fiber rig and distinctive black sails. The yacht boasts an owner's cabin, two guest cabins forward, a split level saloon amidships and accommodation for 6-8 crew aft. Twin pod helm stations, usually only found on offshore racing catamarans, provide all necessary control and navigation equipment and direct access to the galley and crew quarters eliminating disturbance to the owners and guests. Sycamore wood paneling and a centerline skylight keep the interior light and open despite the yacht's menacing appearance.

Classic Rocker David Crosby Puts Yacht Up for Sale

Classic rocker David Crosby of Crosby, Stills & Nash fame has put his beloved wooden sailing yacht on the market after 40 years. Crosby is asking $1 million for the classic 59-ft. Alden 356-B Centerboard Schooner, named Mayan. Crosby, who had an affluent upbringing in California and learned to sail at age 11, composed several songs aboard the yacht which he lived on for long spells. The Mayan is pictured on the cover of the 1977 Crosby, Stills & Nash album CSN, and references to her can be found in songs such as "Wooden Ships," "The Lee Shore" and "Through My Sails."

Crosby originally purchased the yacht in 1968 and spent over $600,000 on a refit in 2005, including new electronics, and she has been upgraded annually. The Mayan, which is located in Santa Barbara, is described as "a very powerful design that takes the weather very well." The cabin layout is very traditional but easily sleeps eight in three staterooms plus a large saloon double berth. Stars like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell have sailed on her. Alfa Romeo Yacht For Sale

I've seen some amazing sailing yachts offered for sale recently. The latest is one that we've been following since her launch in 2005, the Alfa Romeo yacht. The 98-foot yacht is one of the fastest super maxi yachts in the world. The lightning fast beauty has snapped up a variety of prizes in the last few years including most recently passing the line first in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. The yacht makes generous use of carbon fiber both on the inside and out. Because she has been racing for the past couple of years she has been kept in peak shape and comes with two complete containers of spares and sails. The yacht is listed at 3.9 million euros.
