BMW-designed Bavaria Cruiser 55 Debuts in Majorca

What's an automaker to do when the majority of the earth's surface is covered by water and its clients want to take to the high seas? Design a boat, of course. This is actually BMW's third venture into naval architecture, after its DesignworksUSA studio penned the 60-foot Zeydon Z60 sailing yacht and the Bavaria Deep Blue 46 motoryacht. Now it's back with Bavaria for the German shipyard's new flagship, the Cruiser 55.

Launched this weekend at the Palma boat show in Majorca, Spain, the Cruiser 55 benefits from the latest advances in both automotive design and naval architecture in a sleek 55-foot sailing vessel for those who prefer to take in the salty air with the wind in their hair. After perusing the high-resolution images in the gallery below, we're already imagining leaving a BMW Z4 roadster by the docks and sailing off into the sunset.

Caillou Boats: Smaller but Better?

When it comes to luxury it seems bigger is always better (with the exception of gadgets and technology, of course) but when it comes to boating Caillou is embracing a new philosophy: that small is good.

Inspired by sailboat designs from the 1800s and combining it with methods of today, Caillou strives to take the best of both old-fashioned boat building and modern technology to come up with a unique set of small boats that all have ease of use and convenience at heart. There are 3 different models available (Okume, Teak, and Glass) plus a small selection of used boats for sale on their website.

Prince Charles' Yacht Vacation

Filed under: Journeys, Water, Celebrity Shopping, Green

Prince Charles has said before that he's committed to the environment and to reducing his personal carbon footprint on the world, and for his latest trip it seems he's keeping to that promise. Next month he and his wife Camila are planning to sail around the Caribbean on the Leander, a 246 ft luxury yacht, for an 11 day trip that sounds like a mix of business and pleasure. The voyage will have them skipping around to several different locations and officials say that sailing in the yacht will result in reduced costs and reduced carbon emissions compared to having the couple fly each step instead.

The yacht, with huge richly decorated rooms and features like a sauna and hot tub, looks like a vacation in and of itself! And it is available for private charter -- if you've got the dough.

Kitano Kite Sailing Yacht

Now here's a yacht that will catch an eye or two, plus blow your hair back and give you a thrill. Not to oversimplify things, but it's basically a yacht with a kite instead of a sail. The kite principle takes advantage of the greater and more consistent wind speeds found at higher altitudes, raising the boat to planing speeds and making sailing in the shallows and littorals a realistic option.

And on top of everything else the Kitano Kite Sailing Yacht is environmentally-friendly, so us "greenies" can indulge our love of the water guilt free.

Two-Person Hovercraft, Father's Day Gift of the Day

If your father enjoys spending time on the water, this Two-Person Hovercraft might just be the ultimate toy for Father's Day, especially since the Innespace Dolphin isn't commercially available. The hovercraft is powered by a 60-hp gasoline engine along with a 12-V battery. Sitting on an 8-inch cushion of air, it can reach speeds of up to 60 mph on both land and water, though it is most effective on smooth surfaces, such as ice, water, sand, mud, snow, and short grass, rather than dirt or asphalt. It requires registration as a boat, but is US Coast Guard approved. It can carry up to 400 pounds without compromising performance. Price: $13,999.95. A trailer to make transportation easy, if you do not already have a boat trailer, is an additional $1,999.95.

Even Luxury Yachts Can Sink

Shortly after setting out with their brand new Fairline Squadron 58, a 60-foot luxury yacht, two Norwegian men ran it into some submerged rocks and it sank. The men abandoned the sinking ship in the rubber lifeboat, which also started to sink. The Norwegian rescue crews believe that the men were relying too much on their electronic charts and it was an error in navigation (either an error in reading the charts or in the charts themselves) that caused the boat to hit the rocks. The yacht was valued at $2 million and featured four bedrooms, with room for 10 people.

The lesson learned here is that, while fancy electronic equipment is great in a yacht, it's also good if you know how to sail before you set out. And that it's probably a good idea to check the condition of the life boat, just to be safe.

Sail-Away Satchel, Handbag of the Day

This bag from Anthropologie really caught my eye the last time I was in the store. It's the Sail-Away Satchel, made of natural canvas with blue, calfskin accents and leather handles. The bag is soft and lightweight, despite its solid appearance, with plenty of interior room. The buckle on the front is purely decorative; there is a zip closure on the top of the bag, as well as a zip pocket on either end of the bag. It's a great choice for traveling, but you can't go wrong toting it around town, either. Price: $448.

Making good use of already existing products, this handbag is made out of the sailcloth from a real ship.
