Pininfarina Building Custom Rolls-Royce Hyperion

The Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe is the basis for a privately commissioned one-off to be built by Pininfarina. The buyer/collector remains anonymous at this point, and although there aren't many details available we do know that the car will be named Hyperion (of Greek mythology) and the inspiration for the car's style will be pre-war Rolls-Royce models.

Look for the car to debut in August at Pebble Beach. Maybe then we'll get to see the who the mystery owner is? (And find out how much this baby cost!).

Astor Collection Auto Auction This Weekend

Renowned entrepreneur and broadcast veteran Art Astor is selling off part of his famous car collection in Anaheim, California this weekend. The sale, conducted by RM Auctions, mainly features American cars with a few classic imports of the kind we're partial to thrown in. We're particularly fond of this 1970 Jaguar XKE Series II Roadster, for example, which with an estimate of only $40,000 - $60,000 is something of a bargain. Also included in the sale: a 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I "Playboy" roadster which was used as a movie car and has been driven by Bette Davis and Robert Redford, est. $175,000 - $250,000; a 1968 Jaguar XKE Series I.5 2+2 Fixed Head Coupe, est. $30,000 - $40,000; a 1961 Jaguar XK150 3.8 Roadster, est. $80,000 - $120,000; a rare 1941 Chrysler Town & Country Nine-Passenger Estate "woody" wagon, est. $250,000 - $300,000; and a 1954 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster. est. $125,000 - $150,000. See the gallery for pix, and place your bids online at LiveAuctioneers.com.

Rolls-Royce Club's Annual Rally in the UK This Weekend

The other day we mentioned that Sean Connery's 1961 Bentley is being auctioned off this weekend at a Rolls-Royce rally. The event is the annual gathering of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club (RREC), which takes place at a stately manor house named Kelmarsh Hall near Northampton, England through Sunday. Prizes are given for the best in class. The Club was formed in 1957 by a small group of Rolls-Royce and Bentley enthusiasts and now boasts a membership of over 10,000 people in 52 countries worldwide. Some snobs sniff over the fact that ownership of either car is no longer a requirement, but we find it to be a very democratic attitude. The Club's one-time entrance fee is £30 (or about $60) and a year's membership for overseas enthusiasts costs £54 (or about $108). Membership confers unrivaled access to events such as the Rally, technical information, historic records, workshop manuals, a special automotive insurance policy and more. You can apply here.

The Most Brilliant British Fashion Photographer
You've Never Heard Of

We look at lots of photo books in this line of work, but we've rarely been as impressed by one as much as teNeues' massive new Tim Walker monograph. The fact that the Brit fashion photographer's name is not as well known as that of some lesser talents must surely be corrected by the barrage of surreal, sublime images in Tim Walker: Pictures. A former assistant of Richard Avedon's, the 38-year-old obviously learned from the master, but he could hardly be called an Avedon imitator with his flair for elaborate, dreamlike tableaux. An exhibit of Walker's work opened in London last month, but for the $125 this vibrant volume costs you can be transported much further afield. No expense was spared for the extravagant British Vogue holiday shoot pictured above; the magazine even bought the vintage Rolls-Royce in case Walker had to destroy it in order to get the photo just right, as he never uses digital manipulation in his work. See the gallery for more.

Rolls Royce RR4

Although its official red carpet reveal to the public market will not occur for two years new sketches of the Rolls Royce RR4 have just been released for your viewing pleasure. Vehicle development and testing are already underway and the new model retains the long-hood, high-beltline proportions as the Phantom series cars, yet the engine is said to be truly unique to RR4. The cost has not been mentioned as of yet but the rest of the official press release is available in our continued section...till 2010, enjoy the rough sketches.

The Classicist: Memories of Motoring's Golden Age

As a side note to Bonhams' classic car auction at the annual Greenwich Concours d'Elegance in Connecticut this weekend, the sale also includes some reminders of a more elegant age of motoring. In addition to the amazing automobiles on offer, there are a few rare examples of perfectly-preserved traveling cocktail, picnic and tea sets in leather cases from the 1910s and '20s.

More elegant and elaborate antecedents of the kind of picnic sets still produced by the likes of Dunhill - such as the one my colleague Rigel Gregg wrote about the other day - these are the sort of cases one's servants would put into the boot of the Rolls for a day's motoring along with a hamper of delectables from Fortnum & Mason (which are still available today - see the gallery for a picture of their $200 Regent hamper featuring champagne, truffles, paté and port).

Included in the Greenwich auction is this gorgeous Dunhill traveling cocktail set from the 1920s featuring a nickel cocktail shaker, four stacking tumblers, a glass bitters bottle with a silver plated top and three silver plated spirit flasks, in a monogrammed honey leather carrying case, est. $3,000 - $4,000. If these days it seems a bit odd that so much thought and effort went into ways of drinking and driving, remember that as often as not one's chauffeur did the actual work behind the wheel.

Classic Cars on Offer at First Greenwich Concours Sale

On Sunday June 8 London auction house Bonhams will stage its first ever auction in conjunction with the annual Greenwich Concours d'Elegance in Connecticut. The top-priced lots are rare racing cars prized by automotive historians, such as a 1931 Maserati Tipo 8C-2800 competition two-seater, est. $600,000 - $850,000, and a 1965 McLaren-Elva M1A Sports Racer, est. $250,000- $300,000. However, there are plenty of beautiful and highly collectible cars that one can actually drive on offer as well.

Among our favorites is this perfectly-restored British made 1956 AC Ace, est. $140,000 - 180,000, in British racing green, natch. Other highlights include: a 1963 Porsche 356B 1600 Super 90 Cabriolet, est. $110,000 - 130,000; a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTC/4 Coupe, est. $110,000 - $135,000; a 1974 Jaguar Series III V-12 XK-E Roadster, est. $50,000 - $70,000; a 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet, est. $100,000 - $150,000; and the steal of the sale, a 1979 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith II Saloon, est. only $25,000 - $35,000.

The Hidden Story of the Rolls-Royce to Become a Movie

Ever looked upon the figurine adorning the hood of a Rolls and wondered who that stunning woman was modeled after? Well, the silver screen will soon bring you the answer -- but I'd be happy to give you a sneak peak. Called the Spirit of Ecstasy or The Whisperer, the emblem was born out of a love affair between Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and his secretary Eleanor Thornton. Although a potential national scandal, the symbol that influenced future Rolls Royce emblems will live on through a new film starring Christian Bale called The Silver Ghost. Love affair, beautiful cars and drama -- sounds like my kind of movie.

Woolworth Heiress' Historic Rolls-Royce for Sale

An ultra-rare 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II drophead coupe built for the original "Poor Little Rich Girl," Barbara Hutton, is being auctioned off on eBay with a starting bid of $1.1 million. The Woolworth Heiress originally purchased the car, one of only two ever made (and the only known example now in existence), for her first husband, the Russian Prince Alexis Mdivani. With coachwork by Thrupp & Maberly, the car cost $20,000 at the time.

This historic Rolls has something of a tragic history; Mdivani, who only stayed married to Hutton for one year (she had seven husbands in all including Cary Grant) was killed while driving it in France shortly after their divorce. Following the macabre accident, the Rolls was sent back to Thrupp & Maberly and fully restored, though the Prince was not. On the plus side, it only has 9,999 miles on it and is in beautiful shape.

A $200,000 Hood Ornament for Rolls-Royce

Okay, this doesn't seem wise: putting an enormous diamond-encrusted hood ornament on the front of your Rolls-Royce. Aren't you just asking somebody to pop it off as they run by? Well, regardless, it certainly does look sparkly and it's really just a bit of promotional bling created by a jeweler for The New York International Auto Show. It's a one-of-a-kind diamond version of the Rolls-Royce mascot designed by Manhattan jeweler Jean Kemanjian and is exclusive to Manhattan Motorcars. Called "The Spirit of Ecstasy," it measures 4"h x 2"w and consists of mostly diamonds and platinum, plus a few other rare metals. Valued at $200,000.

Mutec Rolls-Royce Limo

Sure, the Rolls-Royce Phantom is already a gorgeous automobile, but imagine it stretched forty-three inches longer with face-to-face seating in the rear behind the newly installed screen. That is what Mutec can do for your Rolls if you've got one hanging around, needing a little revamping and a tad more room inside. If you didn't feel important enough in the Phantom already, this ultra-chic limo will certainly make heads turn and standard limo riders more jealous than the Patriots are of the Giants.

2007 Was a Great Year for Bentley

The luxury market may be floundering but it was the best year ever for Bentley. The luxury car company sold 10,014 units worldwide, outselling Rolls-Royce, which also broke through the 1,000 mark for the first time last year, by around 10 to one. As you might expect, Bentley's biggest increase was in China, where sales grew by a blistering 93% (with a total of 338 units). Sales in North America were up 4% with 4,196 units sold. It was the first year the cars were sold in Korea and 100 were sold.

Luxury Car Key Pendants

Whether you own one of these luxury vehicles, or wish you could, the key pendants from Imperial Craftwork should be on your wish list. Choose the auto logo you desire from ten options, select sterling silver, sterling with white gold plating, or pure platinum, and add some panache to your keys for $130 and up. The only unfortunate thing is your gift may be on hold for a bit -- the only style in stock was the Audi pendant. Guess there is always Valentine's Day or St. Paddy's! (Any occasion is good for a gift).

Rolls-Royce Limited Edition Phantom Tungsten

I thought a Rolls-Royce was luxurious but the new Phantom Tungsten is downright seductive! (There is something about a rare metal with wheels). At the recent Middle East motor show held in Dubai, Rolls rolled out this limited edition ride and all of its amazing features. If you like the outside you'll love the trimmings on the inside. A starry night is simulated on the ceiling and the East Indian rosewood veneer, which snuggles up next to the smoke gray and navy blue contrasting leathers, makes for a spectacular car.
