Fifty Years of Equestrian Champions from the Stables of His Highness the Aga Khan
A new lavishly illustrated volume by Philip Jodidio from Prestel highlights fifty years of the prestigious horse racing and breeding enterprises of His Highness the Aga Khan, the immensely wealthy Muslim spiritual leader. The urbane Aga Khan, a philanthropist, Harvard graduate and stepson of Hollywood bombshell Rita Hayworth, built his world class thoroughbred empire on a legacy handed down through generations and now oversees one of the largest and most successful racing and breeding operations in Europe. The luxe book traces the history of the Aga Khan Studs including many famous champions through remarkable photographs, engravings and paintings taken from the Aga Khan's archives. Also included is a lengthy interview with His Highness and informative essays on what makes a great racehorse. Check out the gallery for a preview.

RM Auctions to Feature Celebrity Classics in Arizona

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions

Some collectors seek out celebrity memorabilia. Others collect classic cars. Once in a while those fields intersect, however, as they are set to at RM Auctions' upcoming Automobiles of Arizona event.

Still several months away, the Canadian auction house is already lining up consignments. This year they'll be featuring classic British motors as well as several important examples of Ferrari's history. But few are as exciting as the celebrity factor behind these four early announcements: a rare 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder once owned by baseball legend Reggie Jackson and motorcycle stuntman Evel Knievel, estimated at a million dollars; the 1929 Duesenberg Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton driven by Elvis Presley in the movie Spinout (also estimated around a million), a 1941 Lincoln Continental Coupe given by Orson Wells to Rita Hayworth (pictured above, estimated around $175k) and a 1949 Cadillac Series 75 Woodie Limousine commissioned by MGM studios from the Schwartz garage (~$300k).

Watch this space for more info and photos as the event is still three months away.

This Weekend's La Jolla Motor Car Classic features Rita Hayworth's Cadillac

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

As if you needed another reason to go to the beach, or another reason to go the beach in La Jolla, this weekend provides: La Jolla Cove will again host this weekend's La Jolla Motor Car Classic. And while the gathering will be doing its best to honor the works of the hands of some guy by the name of Carroll Shelby (yes, that one), it the honor accorded to Rita Hayworth that you might truly be interested in.

Or at least, that of her Cadillac. Understandably taken with the charms of Lady H, Prince Ali Khan bought her a 1953 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe that was custom built by Carrozzeria Ghia. There are only two of them in the world, and only one of them was owned by the woman who helped Tim Robbins swim through a mile of you-know-what (hint: Shawshank). And yes, it's purple.

There will be other cars there from other lands so you can get your vintage on – British, Italian, German marques, horseless carriages, vintage motorcycles, et al. And there's always that Shelby guy. But come now, we all know that you go for Rita, and stay for the rest. The show begins Sunday, January 10th, at 9:00 a.m.
