Riedel Endorses Miele as Dishwasher of Choice

Riedel stemware are beautiful "tools" (in the words of CEO Maximilian Riedel) to help you get the most out of your wine varietal or spirit of choice. But they also come with a seven step "Cleaning Guide," which is about four to five more steps than I want to perform when doing dishes. The solution came from high-end German appliance maker, Miele, who overcame Riedel's skepticism to become the first automatic dishwasher approved by the 250-year-old Austrian glassmakers for cleaning their products.

Riedel, along with Miele USA CEO Nick Ord, convened at Miele's Manhattan gallery to announce the partnership, which they said went beyond brand synergy and represented an old-fashioned European alliance, sealed with a handshake. Ord said the goal of achieving Riedel's imprimatur was a personal, as well as, professional challenge for him, as he owns Riedel glassware and naturally uses a Miele machine at home. Extensive and rigorous testing ensued with an emphasis on Miele's patented water hardness-adjusting GlassCare function and the basket design of the G 5000 series (Riedel is especially sensitive about his glasses being placed too close together).

Satisfied that their Museum of Modern Art-worthy wine glasses were in good hands, Riedel gave its blessing. When used properly, Miele owners can expect their Riedel glasses to last 1,500 washing cycles, or about 20 years on average, according to Ord. That sure beats 20 years of the seven step method.

The Riedel Eve Decanter

I had my first look at the Riedel Eve Decanter at a tasting a few weeks ago, "Glassware. You're Doing It Wrong." Glassware expert and Riedel heir Maximilian Riedel showed it to us, commenting that it was made for him, as he was born in the year of the snake.

If there's anything stranger than aerating wine by shaking the decanter, it's the Eve Decanter. This funny-shaped, swirly and yes, snake-like tube of glass is highly effective for aeration, and a darn good party trick. Check out the video above to see Maximilian demonstrate it for you.

How does one clean it? Well, we hear that "Maximilian washes his snake in the bathtub."

Glassware. You're Doing It Wrong.

Maximilian Riedel of the famous Austrian Riedel wine glass family hosted a tasting this week which taught me more about wine than any wine tasting I've been to in years. How? Because it wasn't a wine tasting. It was a glassware tasting.

I knew the basics. I knew you're not supposed to drink white out of red glasses or red out of champagne flutes (or coffee mugs, but hey, we all went to college), but there was a lot I didn't know I didn't know about how much the shape of a glass can affect the taste and experience of a wine.

For example -- did you know that the basic near-spherical globe glass was designed for white? Chardonnay, to be specific. Also, according to Riedel, you should be drinking most champagnes out of the same glasses from which you should be drinking pinot noir. And wait till you see them.

Riedel Glas Austria's basic cabernet glass is the most highly produced and best selling wine glass in the world -- but, in fact, they recommend a much larger glass for cabernet, one they began making when they finally purchased their own machinery in 2004.

The Classicist: Veuve Clicquot Clicks with Riva Yachts

Renowned French champagne house Veuve Clicquot has teamed up with luxury Italian motoryacht maker Riva to produce an amazing new Grande Dame Cruise Collection of coolers and accessories for discerning yachtsmen. It's nothing short of a match made in style heaven of two very chic European marques. The top offering from the collaboration is an $80,000 made-to-order cruising trunk that resembles a small boat in itself and harks back to the golden age of traveling in style which we reminisced about recently. For something done on such a grand scale it's rather refined, a luxurious design without resorting to odious "bling" to attract those with more money than sense.

The trunk comes packed with four bottles (1988) and two magnums (1998) of Clicquot's coveted La Grande Dame champagne, six Riedel crystal champagne flutes and elegant table settings for six people. A smaller limited edition Cruiser Bag comes with a single bottle of Grande Dame and two flutes for more intimate occasions, and a matching ice bucket is crafted with marine flair to spare. All pieces feature the same lacquer work, mahogany inlay, chrome detailing and leather trim found on Riva's beautiful boats.

Riva, which dates from the 1800s, is an icon of the Italian Riviera's Dolce Vita style. The company first captured the attention of movie stars and the international jet set in the '50s. Its classic wooden craft, which inspired the Cruise Collection, have been owned by the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren, Aristotle Onassis and Prince Ranier of Monaco. Riedel Grape Glasses

Somewhere between the angular sculpture of a martini glass and the graceful curves of a wine glass you find this hybrid beauty, the Riedel Grape Martini glass. The glasses have pulled stems which form a cleft at the base of the curved bowl. They are made in Germany from 24% lead crystal. A pair of glasses sells for $70 and they are only available through Williams-Sonoma. They are the perfect thing to use when serving a martini made with grape-based vodka like Ciroc or Roth or Idol.

Riedel Pink Champagne "O" Tumbler

This month is full of brilliant products to raise money for breast cancer. Riedel Crystal which offered a special glass last year, has created a Pink Champagne "O" glass to toast women whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. Unlike the other "O" glasses, the Pink Champagne glass sits on a ribbed hollow pedestal and the bowl is an elongated tulip shape. The glasses look a bit more like a pilsner glass than a champagne flute. A pair of Pink O Champagne glasses will retail for $27 with 15% of the wholesale price donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer. The black box will be emblazoned with the breast cancer pink ribbon.

Riedel Thumbs Up Decanter

The Thumbs Up decanter is part of the Riedel "O" collection by Maximilian Riedel. It is designed not only to allow the wine to breathe and reach the pinnacle of its flavor, as Riedel strives to do with most of their designs, but it is meant to deliver a secure, elegant pour. There is a divot in the base of the decanter made for the thumb, allowing the rest of the hand to cradle the crystal, instead of gripping its sides. It holds a full 750-ml of wine and the elliptical opening is shaped to prevent dripping, so this is an excellent choice for serving to a group of guests, making it easy to move from glass to glass. Riedel Amadeo Lyra Decanter

The Riedel Amadeo collection is one of the newest from the Austrian company, which is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year. The Amadeo name commemorates the fact that this is also Mozart's 250th anniversary year. According to their website, founder Claus Riedel was the first glass-maker to create wine glasses that varied in shape according to the wine they were to contain. The Amadeo Lyra Crystal decanter takes its name from its unique shape. It holds 59 ounces of your favorite wine, young or old, allowing it to breathe and have the clarity of its flavor shine through. Taste3 Mondavi Conference

This summer the Robert Mondavi Winery is holding a new conference, Taste3, which will bring together wine, food and the arts. The conference will take place in Napa, California from July 13-16 at Copia: The American Center of Wine Food & the Arts. The list of people tapped for the conference are widely eclectic, ranging from Austrian crystal designer Georg Riedel to archaeological chemist Patrick McGovern and Leo McCloskey, founder and president of Enologix, a wine consultancy that uses chemistry to predict taste score. There will be winemakers, scientists, writers and sommeliers and even Robby Barnett, the artistic director of the dance troupe Pilobolus. The conference will feature a variety of chefs such as Alice Waters and Thomas Keller. The event will include epic dinners at famous Napa Valley wineries such as Harlan Estate, Quintessa and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and the most anticipated meal, the Great Chefs of Robert Mondavi Winery Alumni Dinner on Saturday, July 15, in which some of the world's most famous chefs will create dishes paired with special anniversary selections from Robert Mondavi Winery's wine library. The conference will end on July 16, the 40th anniversary of the Oakville winery. Taste3 costs $2,350 per person.
