Remy Martin Unveils VSOP Hot Holiday Bottle

The famed French cognac house of Rémy Martin, founded back in 1724, has been part of countless holiday celebrations over the centuries. This season the venerable fine champagne cognac's VSOP expression, the best-selling VSOP cognac in the United States, is getting a glowing makeover for the holidays. The new limited edition Rémy Martin VSOP Hot Holiday bottle (above) is appropriately dressed in red for the festivities. The colorful cladding also recalls the fact that Rémy Martin VSOP has been a symbol of style and sophistication since its introduction in the exuberant Paris cabaret scene in 1927. The cognac itself is amber in color with rich flavor and a refined aroma. Smooth and easy-to-drink with appealing notes of vanilla, violet, apricot, peach and licorice, it's silky and warm on the palate with a well-balanced taste and long finish. Perfect on its own or over ice, we also enjoy it with soda and lemon or in a Sidecar.

Remy Martin Unveils $1,000 "Diamant" Cognac

Rémy Martin has unveiled a new super-premium cognac it will begin selling through travel retail this October.

"Diamant" Fine Champagne Cognac is crafted from some of the most sought after grapes in the Champagne region. According to Cellar Master Pierrette Trichet, Diamant contains very rare grapes and boasts traditional distillation methods and long maturation in Limousin oak casks. "To create Rémy Martin Diamant, I have selected the rarest eaux-de-vie from the heart of Cognac – from among the top 10% that are the most prized - and polished them like a precious stone," says Trichet.

Fine Champagne Cognac blends between 300 and 400 eaux-de-vie made exclusively with grapes from the Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne regions. Rémy Martin selects each year eaux-de-vie from Petite and Grande Champagne, from among the local distillers' best production.

On the nose, Rémy Martin Diamant has delicate floral notes of honeysuckle and iris, followed by an aromatic heart of summer fruits such as plum and fig. After that come notes of hazelnuts, candied orange and hints of saffron and jasmine.

Inspired by a faceted diamond nestling in a jewelry box, Diamant will be launched in October at DFS stores in celebration of the leading travel retailer's 50th anniversary. Price: US$1,000. The DFS launch will be followed in December by the Cognac's introduction at other key travel retail outlets.

Rémy Martin Releases First Clear Spirit, V

The cognac house of Rémy Martin ventures into new territory this September with V, the brand's first clear spirit.

V (pronounced "vee," a play on the French "vie," meaning "life") is a departure, not only in its composition but also its intent. The spirit is meant to be mixed as a base in cocktails, and Rémy Martin has paired with a NYC mixologist to offer several ways of how to do that. To achieve its clarity, V is produced using fall-harvested grapes from the house's crus in Cognac, which are then distilled in copper pot stills and blended. But instead of going into barrels for aging, this distillate is cold filtered (down to 14F) throughout the winter months and then left to mellow throughout the spring. It is only during the following summer that V goes into bottle and is ready for consumption. The result is a crystal-clear spirit with hints of pear and mint.

We'll avoid any "clearly" puns here and just say that at the moment we're looking forward to seeing how this release will be viewed.

Louis XIII Holds Court at New York Strip Club

A white hummer pulled up in front of the club, and armed guards were on hand to meet it and escort the passengers. A welcoming committee, of sorts, waited on the red carpet, flanked by me and people like me. The passengers, of course, were a pair of Louis XIII Rare Cask de Remy Martin cognac bottles, and their destination club was the Rick's Cabaret gentleman's club in Manhattan.

Rick's may seem like a strange venue for such a rare spirit. According to Louis XIII senior brand ambassador Remi Brabant, only 786 bottles of the Louis XIII Rare Cask were made, and most will go to private buyers. This is also the case with the 30 bottles allocated to the U.S. market: most will not be featured in clubs. Yet despite these constraints, three bottles were made available to Rick's Cabaret – with the third going to the company's Tootsie's club in Miami.

Frankly, I was a bit surprised that a gentlemen's club would get such a high allocation. Make no mistake: Rick's Cabaret is an upscale establishment, and it provides a luxury service that can get as pricey as you'd like. But, it's just not what you'd expect ... it's not what I'd expect, and I tend to be rather open-minded on these matters. I used to cover Rick's Cabaret and had the pleasure of interviewing the company's CEO, Eric Langan, on several occasions.



Tasting the $15,000 Louis XIII Rare Cask Cognac

Every once in awhile a cognac comes along that turns the industry upside down. Whether by chance or science, or simply by fate, the one thing these cognacs have in common is they were all produced with a great amount of love at each step of the process. The Louis XIII Rare Cask from the House of Remy Martin is no exception.

I was invited to sample this rare cognac, presented by Pierrette Trichet, the first woman to serve as a Louis XIII Cellar Master. Trichet first identified this exquisite cask in 2004, and noticed it was different for two reasons. One, it had an alcoholic strength of 43.8, above the standard 40 degrees, and two, it had an intense aromatic bouquet, much stronger than most. There's no telling what produced the exact conditions to make this exact cognac. But whether from slight cask movements at blending times or historic conditions in the aging process, there's no human way to replicate the process. Building on this chance of nature, Trichet isolated the cask for four years, cultivating it into the perfect balance between aromatic nose and cognac strength.

Harrod's Offers $15,000 Rare Cask Cognac

Harrods has just launched the long-awaited offering of Remy Martin's Louis XIII Rare Cask, comprising a blend of 1,200 ultra-exclusive cognacs aged between 40 and 100 years from a single cask (above). The rare spirit is expected to sell for about $15,000 a bottle. Featuring a formidable bouquet of wild mushrooms and woodsy notes followed by full, spicy tones and notes of gingerbread, wax, nuts and mint, Rare Cask "boasts a presence and density in the mouth that knows no limit." Each portion of Louis XIII Rare Cask is presented in a black crystal Baccarat decanter, hand-blown, hand-decorated, individually numbered and housed in an embellished metal coffret. Every detail of Rare Cask is designed to be a "celebration of the finest craftsmanship reflecting the pedigree of this incredibly rare and distinctive cognac."

The Classicist: Rémy Martin Louis XIII Experience Cognac & Culinary Tour

The famed House of Rémy Martin, founded all the way back in 1724, has a new and unique culinary journey in the heart of Cognac, France. The great gastronomic tour, part of the House's Les Rendez-Vous Rémy Martin, focuses on Louis XIII, the jewel of Rémy's cellar and the most celebrated cognac in the world, as well as the birthplace of cognac itself. The day-long Louis XIII Experience gives visitors access to the "most coveted secrets and treasures" of the renowned cognac house, centered on a private tour through Le Grollet, the Rémy Martin family's historic estate and private cellar.

Guests will experience elite tastings of the prized Grande Champagne Cognac along with a private lunch and dinner prepared by the House of Rémy Martin's Executive Chef, Philippe Saint Romas, in either the historic distillery or a private dining room. Prior to joining Rémy Martin, Saint Romas worked in world-renowned kitchens including Paris' Michelin-starred Senderens Les Ambassadeurs in the Hôtel de Crillon as well as with Alain Ducasse. Visitors also will have the chance to explore the estate's wine pressing hall and view the historic stone stills. Guests are invited to appreciate the cognacs, chosen by cognac's only female Cellar Master, Pierrette Trichet, and offered the chance to learn how to blend cognac to their preference.

Louis XIII rarest reserve cognac was created in 1874 by the House of Rémy Martin. It is described as an "intricate alchemy" blended from 1,200 eaux-de-vie, created from the chalky soils of Grande Champagne, the best growing area of the France's Cognac region. Louis XIII ages up to 100 years in specially crafted oak barrels called tierçons (above). Four generations of cellar masters perfected the unique blend of myrrh, honey, plum, honeysuckle, wood bark, leather and passion fruit that goes in to Louis XIII, making it the most complex and prestigious cognac in the world. The precious elixir comes bottled in a Baccarat crystal decanter with fleur-de-lys stopper.

Enjoy the Cigar Lounge at The Montague on the Gardens

montague on the gardensAs I learned on my last two trips to the United Kingdom, there aren't many places where you can light up a cigar. Had I known about The Montague on the Gardens, I probably would have altered my travel plans a bit. The hotel bar has a dedicated outdoor cigar terrace, which for puffers, amounts to a bit of tranquility in an otherwise hostile world.

Toward the back of the hotel, like-minded guests can gather in the bar for a drink before stepping outside to a blissful smoking location with a great view of the Bedford Estate's private gardens. I tend to bring my own cigars when I travel, but sometimes like to sample the locally available fare and The Montague on the Gardens offers plenty of incentive. The bar has more than 20 brands on hand, including the coveted Cohiba Siglo VI. Smoke it gently while sipping a glass of Remy Martin Louis XIII, and you'll struggle to find a more enjoyable situation.

The hotel itself is designed to impress. It's a Georgian townhouse hotel with 101 rooms and suites – not to mention a two-bedroom apartment. This four-star establishment is within walking distance of the West End and The British Museum, and the "Type A" crowd will be happy to know it isn't far from London's Financial District.

Whatever the day's distraction is, though, return to The Montague on the Gardens and settle down for the evening with the cigar of your choice. Savor each draw, and punctuate it with your preferred spirit. Perfect.

Remy Martin Releases Louis XIII Bottles

This fine champagne cognac from Rémy Martin is showcased in a 70cl carafe Baccarat crystal decanter with fleur-de-lys stopper. Although its size and price cannot compare with the Louis XIII Black Pearl Magnum cognac this more portable bottle offers its consumer the finest champagne cognac with rich notes of jasmine, saffron and five spice aromas along with subtle flavors of fig, sandalwood and ginger. Made from the most premier grapes from the Grand Champagne region this century-old cognac has been tediously tended to and perfected by three generations of Cellar Masters. It will cost you £1200 for your own personal stash.

Rémy Martin 1989 Cognac

Rémy Martin has announced their first single-harvest cognac since Rémy Martin 1965. Rémy Martin has chosen a cognac crafted from the legendary 1989 vintage. Hot summer days combined with cool nights for ideal maturation of the Ugni Blanc grapes. Georges Clot, Rémy Martin cellar master at the time, strove to select the best plots from over a thousand exclusively located in Grande Champagne vineyards, choosing eaux-de-vie from four estate-owned plots. After 18 years of ageing in Limousin oak barrels which were kept separately in a dedicated Rémy Martin cellar, it was decided at the annual tasting in 2007, that Rémy Martin 1989 was reaching its peak.

Tasting notes highlight clove and fig with an intense lingering mouthfeel. It is sold in a black frosted bottle with a resealable wooden cork hand dipped in wax to create a unique seal for each bottle and sells for $300.

David LaChapelle Remy Martin VSOP Cognac


Photographer David LaChapelle's distinctive va-va-voom style graces a new bottle of Remy Martin VSOP Cognac. The bottle LaChapelle created takes its inspiration from the Paris cabaret scene during the Jazz Age when Remy Martin first appeared in 1927. The design features a curvaceous woman dancing in a brightly-colored jungle. The bottle will sell for $50 and will be available at wine and spirits stores around the U.S starting in June. Louis XII Black Pearl Cognac

Limited edition cognacs are always expensive but a new level may have been reached with the Louis XIII Black Pearl cognac which sells for $8,000 (the original Louis XIII sells for around $1,500). The new release will be limited to 786 bottles, the number of decanters that can be taken from one tiercon, the type of oak barrel used by Rémy Martin to age Louis XIII. The spirit is created from 1,200 eaux-de-vie aged 40 – 100 years. The Louis XIII Black Pearl decanter is made of crystal that has a silvery gleam like polished hematite and the decanter is finished with platinum fleur-de-lis designs. Each decanter is numbered and purchasing is done by invitation only. The invitees have been given a private code that lets them log on to the Louis XIII Black Pearl website. The cognac officially goes on sale March 1.
