Red Dot Design Award Honors Luxury Automobiles

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Every year an international jury of experts assembles for the annual Red Dot design awards. Considered one of the most prestigious prizes in product design, awards are handed out each year to designs that stand out above the rest.

This year's list of award winners includes more than 1000 recipients – far too many to list here – divided between honorable mentions, the basic Red Dot award and the Best of the Best category for those truly exceptional designs. Among this year's recipients are a host of luxury automobiles, but only three won the venerable Best of the Best: the Rolls-Royce Ghost, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the Peugeot RCZ. All three are luxury cars with very different design philosophies and body styles, but the good people at Red Dot evidently felt they each deserved special recognition.

The Most Beautiful Luxury Sedan is...a Volkswagen?

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

What may have been unfathomable less than a decade ago can quickly become reality in the present. So while the notion of Volkswagen producing a luxury sedan, much less one as streamlined and graceful as the CC (known overseas as the Passat CC), would have seemed entirely foreign before, some of the German automaker's latest products have emerged as award-winning designs. The svelte four-door coupe, introduced only recently, has already won the prestigious iF Product Design Award as well as the Australian International Design Award. Now Volkswagen can add the Red Dot Design Award to the list.

One of the most coveted design awards, the Red Dot prize has been bestowed annually since 1955 by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen on the best designs in the world, and was accepted this year by Volkswagen designer Martin Kropp on behalf of his entire team.

Tag Heuer Aquaracer 500M And Grand Carrera Calibre 36 Watches Bring Home A Red Dot Award

The Red Dot Award is of the more desirable "good design" awards out there. Emphasis is always on form and function. You'll find that most award recipients are often excellent selling products. The award is given by the Design Zentrum Nordheim Westfalen in Germany. This year two Tag Heuer watches received Red Dot Awards, and this is the fifth time in seven years that Tag Heuer watches received such Red Dot Awards for good product designs.

The two watches that received the award are the new Tag Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 36 and the new Tag Heuer Aquaracer 500M with the Calibre 5 movement. The Grand Carrera Calibre 36 is an odd watch with a sound design concept for measuring 1/10 of a second accuracy in its chronograph complication - in a unique manner. The best way to appreciate it is to view the video here. It is a cool concept, but isn't going to be a high volume seller like the Aquaracer 500M.

The new Aquaracer model is very well done - really advancing the concept of a "professional diver watch" for Tag Heuer. You can read more on what I think about the Tag Heuer Aquaracer 500M here. It has an automatic movement, 500 meters of water resistance, and comes in various colors and materials that each have an strong industrial feel to them that is still inline with being a tasteful timepiece. Fair award recipients if you ask me.
