Presenting the new Bugatti Veyron Super Sports: the World's Fastest Car

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Feast your eyes, ladies and gentlemen, on the new Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. Now we know what you're thinking: Bugatti's rolled out dozens of special editions of its iconic supercar over the past few years. But this is a different kettle of fish altogether.

For the long-anticipated Veyron Super Sports – which follows in the tire tracks of upgraded Super Sports models from the marque's history – Bugatti has tweaked the engine to produce an extra 200 horsepower over the "standard" model's 1000. The resulting 1200-horse output, combined with revised aerodynamics, was enough for Bugatti to claim the land speed record at 267.81 miles per hour, achieved at parent company Volkswagen's proprietary Ehra-Lessian test track in the presence of officials from the Guiness Book of World Records and the German Technical Inspection Agency, making it official.

The Veyron Super Sports will be unveiled officially next month at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, after which full details of customer availability will be announced. For now we know that the first five production models will be painted the same black and neon orange paint scheme as the test vehicle you see here.

Record Amount For Patek Philippe Ref. 3974 At Auction

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Auctions

Another Antiquorum auction and another world record amount for the sale of a specific Patek Philippe watch. Just recently a Black on black Patek Philippe Ref. 3974 perpetual calendar watch in white gold sold for a whopping $1.2 million dollars. The watch is just 10 years old, and others like it have been auctioned off more than once in the last few years. Meaning that while this is not so rare a Patek Philippe watch that it does not come up for auction often. In recent times the depressed economy has somehow been a boom time for Patek Philippe collectors watches at auction. It seems that in almost every new Antiquorum action where a special Patek Philippe watch available, a new record is met. Pretty much any Patek Philippe watch they offer goes for an amount above $100,000.

In this instance, the Ref. 3974 watch is of the most desirable modern Patek Philippe watches and was last made in 1999. The watch features an automatic Patek Philippe movement with the time, perpetual calendar, moon phase indicator, and a minute repeater complication. All that and the watch is small at just 36mm wide. The over one millions dollar amount is truly stunning and reflect the tenacity of the market as well as the collectible nature of the Patek Philippe brand.

Parade of Ferraris Sets New World Record

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Events

Here's a fun traffic jam to be a part of: a group of 385 Ferraris parading down the Silverstone circuit in England. It happened just a week or so ago on June 9th as part of a celebration to mark the company's anniversary year. Just a few of the models present were a 250 California Spider, a 275GTB/C, FXX, F40, F50 and an Enzo. The total value of all the Ferraris involved is estimated to be more than $118.4 million.

For the event the cars traveled slowly over a 2 mile course, made sure to stay within 2 car lengths of each other, and were counted both at the beginning and at the end. A representative from Guinness World Records certified the event as a new world record and presented Ferrari officials with a certificate.

What? No certificates for the individual owners/drivers? Bummer.

Rothko Painting Sets Record in New York

A painting by artist Mark Rothko broke the record for postwar art by more than a little at an auction at Sotheby's in New York when it sold for $72.8 million dollars on Tuesday. Although "White Center (Yellow, Pink, and Lavender on Rose)," was expected to go for high dollars (presale estimates had put it around $40 million), the over-the-top boost can most likely be attributed to the big name of owner and seller David Rockefeller Sr. -- who says he plans to donate the proceeds of the sale to charity.

It was a big night for record breaking sales, as earlier that night Francis Bacon's "Study From Innocent X" broke all previous records selling for $52.7 million, only to be outdone by the Rockefeller's Rothko moments later.

Pollock Sells for $140M

Although neither the seller nor the buyer, both private and tight-lipped, want to comment on the sale, the $140 million price tag that was attached to a Jackson Pollock paining last week makes it the most expensive piece of artwork in history. The painting, which was done on fiberboard, is titled "No. 5, 1948" and measures 4-feet 8-inches in height. David Geffen reportedly it sold to the "obsessively private" Mexican financier David Martinez through Sotheby's. The NY Times speculates that, as Geffen just sold off two other very expensive paintings in the last few weeks, he may be trying to raise money for a bid to purchase the LA Times.

CL Sound Machine

It's hard to say whether the CL Sound Machine is practical, or simply overkill, so I'll let you be the judge. It is a combination iPod docking station, record player, cd player and... wine rack? The triple format audio system is a fantastic idea. Not only does it give you the really interesting, old-fashioned look of a phonograph and the practical ability to play more modern forms of music, but it also allows you to relive some of the classics from the record collection that has been gathering dust in the back of your closet. The question is, is the wine rack necessary? If you have the room and money for this gadget (pricing available upon request), the chances are good that you're going to be able to keep the 12-bottles of wine that the CL holds in another location.

African Mask Fetches $7.5M

At a Paris auction of primitive art, a "Fang 'ngil" African mask sold for $7.5 million - triple its presale estimate. It was the highest selling lot of the auction, which involved more than 500 items, and set an individual price record, though the sale raised about $54 million total, which was a record high itself.

Experts judged that the mask, which originated in Western Africa, dated to the 19th century. It was housed in the privated collection of Pierre and Claude Verite for most of the 20th century, out of the public view. The most remarkable thing about the mask is the impact that it has had on modern art. Painters like Picasso, Matisse and Andre Breton were said to have been deeply inspired by it.

Klimt Painting Sets Record

Eclipsing the record set in 2004 by a Pablo Picasso painting, Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I has sold for $135 million, the highest price ever paid for a painting. It was purchased by billionaire Ronald S. Lauder, the heir to the Estee Lauder fortune, and it will be displayed in his small, New York museum, the Neue Galerie. The painting was taken from the Bloch-Bauer's home in 1938 by Nazis and was sold by her niece, Maria Altmann, who has only had it since the beginning of this year, after looted artwork was returned to relatives of the original owners.

Kahlo Portrait Sets Records

Frida Kahlo's 1943 painting, Roots, broke two records when it sold at a Sotheby's auction this week. Its final price of $5.6 million not only set a record for the artist, besting a 1929 self-portrait that sold in 2000, but it set a record as the highest price received at auction by a Latin American artist. Roots is an oil-on-metal self-portrait of the artist and was offered for auction by a private collector who had owned it for 25 years.

Violin Sets Auction Record

A Stradivarius violin made in 1707, known as "The Hammer", sold for far more than its estimated price of $1.5-2 million at a Christie's auction today. The winning bid, placed by a private collector, was for $3.54 million. This makes it the most expensive musical instrument ever sold at auction, though there are reports that say private sales have gone even higher. Stradivari is believed to have made more than 1,100 instruments in his lifetime and approximately 600 violins are believed to survive today. The Hammer is said to be from the master craftsman's "golden period," when he produced his finest pieces.

So Cal Ritz-Carlton Sold for $330M

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

The Ritz Carlton Laguna Nigel on the Southern California coast has just been sold for $330 million, or approximately $840,000 per room. This makes it the second most expensive hotel sale in terns of price per room, only surpassed by the sale of the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, which had a price tag of $1 million per room.

The 22 year old hotel has 393 rooms, including 38 suites, and was acquired by Strategic Hotels, who is hoping to increase their presence in the luxury hotel market in California. Strategic feels that not only is the beachfront property worth its high price, but that it is sure to increase in value over the next two decades given that space on the coast is both desirable and difficult to obtain. The hotel, prior to the sale, underwent a $40 million renovation that revamped the interior and improved their spa and fitness offerings.  Rooms start at $400 a night and ocean-front suites are available for more than $2,000 per night. They also offer a $750 per night Mercedes-Benz package, which includes the use of a car.

Turner Painting Sets New Records

Wow, the auction of that J.M.W. Turner painting at Christie's this week turned out to be even more exciting than imagined. The painting, "Giudecca, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio" sold for $38.5 million to a private collector bidding over the phone. It set a new record for an Old Master painting in the U.S. and is the most expensive British painting ever sold. The painting was sold by the St. Francis of Assisi Foundation and as we mentioned before, is tax exempt.

Audiophile Turntable Roundup at SonicFlare

One of my favorite sites, SonicFlare.com, has a great post on high end turntables.  Though he makes no mention of the Caliburn turntable, Josh talks about the Monaco player, the Gaia, and an update on the Garrard 301.  Lots of fun links for wax lovers, so take a peek.
