Heritage Craftsmanship: Red Wing Shoes Video Series

For over 100 years, the Minnesota-based Red Wing Shoe Company has been carefully crafting premium quality footwear made for specific work environments. Designed for duty on factory floors, construction sites, refineries and railroads, their rugged style has also been adopted by many who do nothing more perilous than cross a Brooklyn subway platform at rush hour. These days you can even find them at J. Crew.

The Red Wing Heritage collection pays homage to the company's history of hardcore work boots with some styles designed for the Range Rover set as well. We are, admittedly, in the latter camp. Regardless of which style suits you, the boots and shoes are still crafted with skill and treated like fine tools for the wearer. Premium Red Wing Shoes leather, tanned at the company's own S.B Foot Tanning Company, is triple stitched with waxed thread for quality. The video above shows the process in action.

Charles Beckman, a Red Wing, Minnesota merchant who saw a need for durable and comfortable work boots, founded the firm in 1905. Today, a third generation of employees, located just down the road from the original factory, continues the tradition he established by using the same craftsmanship and attention to detail. Range Rover Sport Luxury Edition

Land Rover has announced a new special edition of its Range Rover Sport model for the European market. Called the Luxury edition, it slots in between the HSE and Autobiography editions. It's distinguished by such special touches as a sunroof, heated steering wheel, contrast-stitched leather trim and a Harman/Kardon audio system.

Available in Europe exclusively with the 245hp, 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6, it can be ordered in white, black or bronze, offset by black trim and 20-inch wheels. Pricing comes in at a princely €110,000.

Land Rover & Range Rover Make the Scene at NY Fashion Week

Land Rover and Range Rover added an extra dose of style to two of Fashion Week's hottest shows with a fleet of vehicles for VIPs. The new Land Rover LR4 was the starring attraction at the Rag & Bone show in Soho, sponsored by the famed UK SUV marque, where beauties like model Jessica Stam (above) and Mad Men's Jon Hamm made the scene. And at the presentation by Marchesa, designed by Georgina Chapman, Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports provided luxe transportation for the likes of actresses Vanessa Hudgens and Michele Trachtenberg, musician Eve, socialite and TV personality Olivia Palermo, and model Irina Lazareanu. At both venues the vehicles sported the designer's logos, and when lined up impressively outside got nearly as much attention as the scenesters themselves.

"Land Rover is expanding its marketing profile with, for the first time, supporting a fashion house, Rag & Bone, during New York Fashion Week," noted Stuart Schorr, vice president of communications and public affairs, Jaguar Land Rover North America. "The Rag & Bone brand, led by Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, is admired for its refined and versatile aesthetic. Both Land Rover and Rag & Bone were born in England and enjoy massive global appeal. The Land Rover LR4 has evolved a distinct design heritage that is rooted in both authentic luxury and rugged capability. Similarly, through Rag & Bone, Marcus and David have established a legacy through high levels of skill and craftsmanship." Might we dare to hope for a Ltd. Rag & Bone Edition LR4 edition in the near future....?

Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition

Wondering who makes the ultimate luxury sport-utility vehicle? Wonder no longer, because it's here. Called the Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition, it's essentially a Rolls-Royce in SUV form.

The biggest upgrade comes inside the first-class cabin, where the individual rear seats are separated by a console with integrated drinks cooler and aluminum tray tables, with iPads mounted to the front seatbacks. The cargo bay has been trimmed with a teak deck like a megayacht's, and of course the leather and wood trim is all top-choice.

Outside is a dark grille, door handles color-keyed to the body (which is available with a couple of new paint options), along with the requisite special badging and unique 20-inch alloys, and buyers can choose from either the 4.4-liter V8 turbodiesel or the 5.0-liter supercharged V8. Pricing has yet to be announced, but the Autobiography Ultimate Edition is set to be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

Range Rover Sport RS500 by Project Kahn and Cosworth

Some people would be satisfied with a vehicle as capable and luxurious as a Range Rover Sport. But that can't be everyone. Otherwise there wouldn't be companies like Project Kahn and Cosworth.

The two premier British tuning houses have taken the Range Rover Sport – the diesel model, not the supercharged V8 – and tweaked its engine to produce 500 horsepower, up from 313 stock. To go along with it, they've given the luxury SUV a thorough design upgrade including new bumpers, side skirts and wheels, plus an interior decked out in perforated and quilted leather with billet aluminum trim.

Winter can be a long, cold interlude verging on a test of endurance in the Northeast, and it's all too easy to get bogged down by the doldrums. Plenty of people either hibernate by their hearths or hit the beach until the mercury makes its ascent, but there are myriad ways to keep warm with style, verve and panache. We recently gathered some of our favorite accessories of the season at Wheatleigh, the majestic mansion-turned-luxury hotel in the heart of the Berkshires' winter wonderland. Getting us there in style and comfort through anything the weather cared to concoct was the 2011 Range Rover Sport, a luxurious way to see the landscape safe in the knowledge that the elements have met their match. The pedigreed SUV's smooth, refined, performance and rugged good looks mark it as a thoroughbred in all respects, a suitably stylish conveyance for arriving at a desirable destination like Wheatleigh. And we had the great new Olympus PEN E-PL1 compact, versatile digital camera on hand to record it all for your vicarious enjoyment.

Wheatleigh, located in Lenox, Mass. next door to Edith Wharton's famed country manor The Mount, is a grand estate based on a 16th century Florentine palazzo built in 1893 by New York financier Henry H. Cook for his daughter who married a Spanish count. Many of the materials and over 150 artisans were brought from Italy to produce intricate carvings and design flourishes for the grand interiors and facades. Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who designed Central Park in New York, was responsible for creating "Wheatleigh Park" on the land surrounding the palazzo. Following a four year multimillion dollar renovation it was transformed into one of the most unique luxurious small hotels in the world. The nineteen suites, guest rooms and baths artfully combine antiques and custom furnishings with original museum quality contemporary art. The baths are finished with English limestone, marble and hand-blown glass fixtures, and most rooms feature fireplaces and Bang & Olufsen TVs. Range Rover Evoque: Now with 5-Door Versatility

Land Rover unveiled the new Range Rover Evoque just a couple of months ago. But while it cuts a sleek profile, its three-door body-style won't be everyone's cup of tea. And so the British purveyor of luxury sport-utility vehicles has augmented the range with a more conventional five-door version as well.

The more versatile Evoque is otherwise essentially unchanged from the three-door version. 150 and 240-horsepower engines are available, in either economic front-wheel drive – a Land Rover first – or the company's go-anywhere all-wheel drive, complete with Land Rover Terrain Response. Only in the five-door version offers easier access to the rear seats for better passenger and cargo carrying capabilities. The Evoque hits 160 markets around the world beginning summer 2011.

Millionth Range Rover Donated to Charity

After forty years of production, Land Rover has produced their landmark millionth Range Rover, and is donating it for a charity auction in London. The milestone luxury SUV in question – a top-of-the-line Range Rover Vogue Autobiography edition in black – has a retail value in excess of £85,000.

Celebrity automotive journalist Jeremy Clarkson will take possession on the charity's behalf during the Top Gear Live show at Earls Court, after which the vehicle will be put up for auction to benefit wounded soldiers through the Help for Heroes foundation which Clarkson represents and for whom the vehicle is expected to raise in excess of £100,000.

Land Rover Introduces the Range Rover Evoque

This is the 2012 Range Rover Evoque – lighter, meaner, even greener... than the usual Range Rover product, at least. The production version of the LRX-inspired luxury SUV wears all of the cues that made us ask them to build it in the first place, and an interior that raises the game for smaller sport-ute offerings.

On the subject of exteriors, there will be three design themes from which to choose: Pure, a minimalistic take with 19-inch wheels outside and natural colors complemented by brushed metal trim inside; Prestige, a "bespoke exterior" treatment with exclusive 19-inch wheels paired "an indulgent interior;" or Dynamic, with 19- or 20-inch wheels a reworked bodykit, and a "premium sports interior" cabin with items like perforated leather seats.

Inside is an interior influenced not only by the Range Rover Sport, but by Jaguar as well. Seriously bolstered seat straddle a center tunnel wherein lies a rotary gear change dial that rises to hand. The four-setting Terrain Response System dial has been replaced with buttons attending an illuminated menu. Controls are mainly managed through an 8-inch touchscreen. Aural enjoyment is provided by the 825-watt, 17-speaker Meridian sound system with additional inputs for other peripherals.

Underneath the Evoque's hood is a 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder provided by Ford engine which should provide plenty of grunt with smaller gas bills. Electric power steering turns the wheels, and an regenerative electrical system captures energy when those wheels are slowed down. Roadgoing is meant to be kept smooth by the MagneRide adaptive dynamics suspension. It goes on sale in the fall of 2011, but we'll see it in person at the Paris Motor Show at the end of the month.

Range Rover Sport Vesuvius Edition by Project Kahn

There was a time, before Porsche, Lexus, Audi and everyone else got into the sport-utility game that Range Rover was, in more ways than one, the undisputed king of the hill. These days the British luxo-ute has a lot of competition, so if you're looking for a way to distinguish yours from the rest, look no further than Project Kahn.

The English customization studio has a wealth of experience in modifying Range Rovers, and with the new Vesuvius Edition, has turned its attention to the recently updated Range Rover Sport. The upgrades include a full aero package, an interior decked out in quilted and perforated leather, custom 22" wheels, an orange and black color scheme inside and out, and comes topped with special touches like a carbon fiber umbrella and even a custom watch.

Luxist Drives the 2010 Range Rover, Feeling of Royalty Still Hasn't Worn Off

When the winds of model-year change blew on Land Rover's 2010 lineup, they hit the LR3 at hurricane speeds forceful enough to turn it into the LR4. A shade of velocity lost, they still rocked enough impact to reshape the Range Rover Sport into the faster and highly finessed luxo-beast we'd been pining for since we drove it in 2007.

By the time those gales rushed over the clamshell bonnet of the Range Rover they had slowed considerably, leaving a mild-by-comparison alteration of the top-tier landscape. That doesn't mean it wasn't a potent alteration, though: heightened sensations from innovations like the TFT dashboard and vastly increased motivation from the new Jaguar-derived 5.0-liter V8 helped make the total package a little bit better everywhere. And when you're already standing on the peak, every little bit counts for a lot.

The Classicist: London's Williams Evans & the "Affordable" Bespoke Shotgun

Bespoke shotguns have been part of the wealthy British gentleman's essential sporting kit since the turn of the last century. They're as much a part of the English country house persona as tweeds, wellington boots and Range Rovers. Such guns are often passed down from father to son and are cared for like the precious objects they most certainly are. All these things they have long been, but up until now they have never been what one would call "affordable". Now William Evans (above), a top-drawer London gunmaker since 1883, is aiming to change all that with a new line of lower-priced bespoke shotguns that still deliver the quality one expects from a well-established London gunsmith.

William Evans first learnt his craft by working for famed gunsmiths James Purdey & Son and Holland & Holland. In 1883 he founded his own gunmaking business near Buckingham Palace and by 1888 his reputation had grown enough for him to move to more prestigious premises in Pall Mall, opposite St. James's Palace. By this time the core of William Evans' client list was firmly established, notably with military officers in the Guards Regiments who ordered sporting guns and rifles before being posted to various parts of the Empire. The move to St. James's, the heart of London's gentlemen's club district, further strengthened his client list and the company attracted the patronage of members of several prestigious clubs such as White's, Boodles and Brooks.

Victoria Beckham to Collaborate With Range Rover

Pneumatic pop star-turned-fashion maven Victoria Beckham has been named the "creative design executive" for Range Rover on the eve of the famed British brand's 40th anniversary. The announcement came during a glamorous fete thrown by British Vogue to celebrate the occasion at London's Kensington Palace. No word yet on what precisely Posh will be doing for Land Rover's luxe SUV marque, though she will probably focus on interiors. "I'm incredibly excited to be collaborating with Range Rover. I like to take on a challenge," Mrs. Beckham declared while wearing a nude silk crepe dress of her own design after Land Rover's new Evoque (formerly the LRX) was lowered from a crane amidst a cloud of dry ice and some sound effects. "This lady knows a lot about fashion and a lot about trends, a lot about luxury products," Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern told Vogue UK. "She's been running her own fashion business for three years and she's incredibly successful."

Range Rover Updated for 2011

The letters RR are intimately familiar to connoisseurs of British luxury automobiles. But while they may correlate to two different vehicles, they both share a great deal. Luxury, status, heritage and fine craftsmanship define both. We're talking, of course, about Rolls-Royce and Range Rover. Each tops its respective class, but only the Range Rover has that go-anywhere capability. And for the upcoming model year, the latter has undergone a series of noteworthy revisions.

At the top of the list is a new 4.4-liter V8 turbo-diesel replacing the old 3.6-liter unit. Along with the supercharged V8 model, it is now coupled to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Land Rover has also carried out a series of cosmetic updates, upgrades to the Terrain Response system and has released a new Autobiography Black edition to commemorate the Range Rover's 40th anniversary. The diesel engine remains excluded from the North American line-up, but the other upgrades are expected to make their way across the Atlantic in short order.
