You can always buy a ranch fill your closet with Western togs, but if the Old West has always captured your imagination, you can take it one step further and buy a homestead at Maytag Mountain Ranch in Hillside, Colorado.

This working cattle ranch, a project of slow food advocate Russ Maytag, is set on 3,000 acres at the foot of Colorado's Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and 100 acre homesteads are for sale. Purchase one of the 14 lots still available -- priced from $879,000 to $1.5 million -- and you also get a 1/27th ownership share of the still-operating cattle ranch, which raises certified organic produce and livestock. The income from the ranch provides income for the housing association, plus, your kitchen will be stocked with your very own dairy, grass-fed beef and produce, and if you want, you can even participate in the ranching. (And if you don't, you can leave it to the ranch staff.) Owners get one month's use of the association's two guest cabins, as well as access to a "Cookhouse", or a clubhouse, which is available for hanging out and parties.

And what would a homestead be without a horse? If you don't have your own, the Ranch Association owns six, and there's room to board your own steeds on site.

Crazy D Ranch, Estate of the Day

Another huge ranch has hit the market through Hall and Hall. The Crazy D Ranch is located near the descriptively named town of Big Timber, Montana. The Crazy D is a big one, around 12,170 deeded acres that includes 3,600 acres of irrigated hay ground and improved pasture with the remaining land left in a native state. The Crazy D has views of the Crazy Mountains. The Crazies, according to Wikipedia, is a shortened version of "Crazy Woman Mountains" a name given them, in compliment to their original Crow name, after a woman who went insane and lived in them after her family was killed in the westward settlement movement.

Putting that grim story aside, the ranch has been a working cattle operation and can support around 500 head of mother cows. Several creeks meander through the property offering ample fishing. Wildlife on the ranch includes antelope, whitetail and mule deer, grouse, pheasant, partridge, cranes, turkey, ducks and geese. The property has room for multiple families working the ranch. Six moderately sized ranch homes dot the property. The main home is a 11,000 square-foot log cabin with five bedrooms, three family rooms, two office and a loft study. There is also an elevator and a heated three car garage and one key feature for stormy winter months, an emergency 15,000 KW generator. The home also has four fireplaces, a walk-in pantry with commercial refrigerator and food warmer, satellite TV and deluxe hot tub. Outside there is a pool for enjoying the area's short but hot summer. This ranch is listed at $22.5 million.

Perry Ranch Gets A Price Cut

The Perry Ranch is a piece of land with a long history. The land's legacy dates back to the early 1900s when young and adventurous Marjorie Perry settled in Steamboat Springs. Perry, a horse-loving, skiing pioneer who helped found the annual Steamboat Winter Carnival lived in the area for most of her life. Marjorie's younger sister Charlotte and Portia Mansfield founded the Perry-Mansfield School of Theater and Dance which is now the oldest continuously operating performing arts school and camp in the nation. In 1930, Marjorie Perry purchased the 470-acre preserve adjacent to the school and built a log cabin, barns and outbuildings. The ranch is located only one mile from the city limits of Steamboat Springs and has scenery that includes a mountain stream, diverse vegetation, water rights and a healthy wildlife habitat. For the conservation minded this property offers a chance to protect critical open space and wildlife habitat in this fast-developing resort area. Perry Ranch was listed at $19 million but the price was recently dropped to $16 million.
