Rainbow Room To Close Rainbow Grill
A New York City institution is the latest victim of the economic crisis. The Rainbow Room that overlooks midtown Manhattan will be closing its Italian-themed Rainbow Grill restaurant as of January 12. The bar, banquet space and the weekend dinner-dancing sessions will continue on the 65th floor. The restaurant is part of the Cipriani restaurant empire and the move is seen as helping to protect what remains of the Rainbow Room. The restaurant has an excellent view but the prices are high (the pre-theater menu was $70 a person and a rib eye steak was $53). Around 30 to 40 of the Rainbow Room's 120 workers will lose their jobs, Gawker has a retrospective featuring shots of the venue in more glamorous days.
