Looking a little like a lace teddy reincarnated as a handbag this Raffia and Lace Tote by Valentino exudes delicate old-time femininity with its intricate lace pattern and vintage coloring. The basic tote-shaped body made of nude raffia is overlaid with black floral scalloped lace on the bottom three quarters or so, with narrow patent leather top handles and a large looped floral embellishment. Inside it's more like a shoulder bag than a tote with a black satin lining, a pair of pouch pockets on one side and a zippered one on the other. $1,395

Kate Spade's spring line of handbags and clutches come in bright, preppy colors like pink, green, and white. But my favorite is the cheerful yellow Lexington Ava clutch. Inspired by the Kentucky Derby--and the lawn party social scene associated with the event--the clutch is made from raffia, a soft fiber that feels like grassy wheat.
