The Fashion Statement: Italians Do It Better?

Milan is delivering the most exciting fashion weeks in years. Fashion critics have been giving rave reviews to Italian designers saying that, for the most part, the collections have been inspired.

One of the more subdued shows of the week, Giorgio Armani (pictured above), presented a spring/summer 2011 collection of entirely navy blue and black--not exactly the most spring/summery of colors. No matter, the fitted double breasted blazers, one-shouldered gowns and skirts over sheer leggings were stunning. Even more interesting: His models were turned out in turbans and veils.

Emilio Pucci Bean Clutch, Handbag of the Day

No, it's not a space pod, it's the Bean Clutch by Emilio Pucci. I would say I love it except I know how I am about smooth shiny objects and frustrating smudges and fingerprint marks -- I'm personally better off with something in a glamorous matte finish. But if this clutch is your cup of tea more power to you (and I admit I'll be a little jealous). It's a hard-box clutch style with a silver tone frame and push-clasp closure. It opens on a hinge as you would expect (be careful not to let everything spill out!) and has the designers logo embossed on an interior as shiny as the exterior. $1,385

Emilio Pucci Frame Bag, Handbag of the Day

Emilio Pucci Frame BagThe Emilio Pucci Frame Bag is an exceptionally elegant evening bag.

Nearly a simple clutch, the plexi bangle wristlet gives this purse an edge -- and makes it easier to carry! Fear not, the bangle is detachable if you're a purist (or if it doesn't match your outfit).

The ruched white silk exudes the same pristine glamour as a spotless white glove. The bag is 8"W X 8"H X 1"D and includes a full silk lining. The classic kiss-in-lock closure makes it timeless.

We recommend pairing this with your loveliest pale or white dress this spring.

The Emilio Pucci Frame Bag is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $950.

Today is the shortest day of the year and, for anyone living somewhere cold, it is also the perfect time to fantasize about summer. Emilio Pucci's Leite Print Medium Canvas Tote is as bright and summery a bag as you can get. The tote is on the small side (12.5" x 9.75" x 5") and is made of canvas with white leather trim and contrasting pink studs. There is a snap closure at the top and a logo textile lining. What makes this even more summery is that there is a cute, matching bikini. Is it too late to ask for a trip to a sunny island for Christmas? Price: $475.

Dress Your Champagne in Pucci

'Tis the season for sexy ways to tote your wine. While yesterday's Ecco Domani bags seemed a pretty fancy way to carry around a $7-10 bottle of wine, today's wine and wine bag are equally matched. Pucci and Veuve Clicquot have partnered up on a bottle of 1996 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame wrapped up in a two-part ensemble. For carrying, there is a drawstring bag that bears a typically ebullient Pucci print. Inside, the bottle is dressed is a black sleeve with a Pucci swirl that will keep the champers cool for another two hours. The bottle sells for $199.

Pucci Beach Towel

Even clothing designers like to take a break from draping fabrics over models and sketching like crazy, and in summer, their thoughts turn toward the beach just like everybody else's. Pucci's plush beach towel has a bright, retro abstract print in vibrant orange, pink and lime green. Unlike your standard towel, each Pucci design is completely unique, so the pattern will vary from towel to towel. Made of 100% cotton, it is absorbent and fluffy, which means that it's equally suited to sunbathing or drying off after a swim. It's not quite in the same price range as the Hermes beach towels to begin with, but they are on sale for $190 right now - what a deal!

Braniff Uniforms to be Auctioned

Mary Sue Seibold remembers how glamorous she felt when she started to work for Braniff International Airlines in the early 1960s. The uniforms were multi-layered affairs, by designers like Emilio Pucci and Halston, and their unveiling at the beginning of each flight was as good as any fashion show. During the course of the 20 years she worked for the airline, she collected the uniforms that she wore and stashed them away. She has decided to put her collection of 19 complete uniforms up for auction. The collection has 86 pieces, including accessories like boots, handbags and hats, and will be sold as one unit by Chelsea Marketeers in June of this year. The minimum bid is $100,000.

A Very Pucci Birthday

And if you’re a fashion designer who has gone, come and gone around again by the time your label is 60 years old, then that’s a birthday well-worth celebrating. Pucci was first made famous by his swirling mid-century silk scarves, which were donned by the likes of Italian film queens such as Claudia Cardinale and Sophia Loren. The white and black top features a stylized screen print of a chic mademoiselle – the very vision of the lady of leisure and sunshine that once typified the “Pucci girl” in the early days of the label. Understated and simple, the stretch cotton jersey tee is matches anything from basic denim to a wilder Pucci print. This tank top is Pucci print for women who worry that they can’t pull off Pucci prints.  Price: $245.
