Princess Margaret's Jewels Bring In The Big Bucks

Never underestimate the draw of royalty. The Sotheby's  Christie's auction of Princess Margaret's jewels did far better than predicted with some items selling for more than 100 times the estimated value.  Even the tiny trinkets valued at a few hundred dollars have sold for thousands. The first day of the two day sale has already exceeded estimates. It's good news for Princess Margaret's children Viscount Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto who are selling the baubles to offset the pinch of inheritance taxes. The famous Poltimore Tiara, which was estimated to sell for 150,000 and 200,000 pounds went for 926,400 pounds ($1.697 million).

The McDonald's jewels may be impressive but nothing get the jewel hunter excited like royal jewelry. Christie's has announced a sale of the late Princess Margaret's jewels and other objects to be sold in London on June 13 and 14. Princess Margaret, the sister of the queen, died in 2002 and her children are putting selected pieces up for sale. Items for bid include a Faberge clock, a diamond necklace and the Poltimore tiara which the princess wore at her wedding. The tiara is estimated at £200,000. The auction isn't all pricey items, at the low-end you can pick up a hedgehog brooch for a mere £50. The sale is expected to bring in approximate £2 million pounds.
