Hoteles Marquis Los Cabos: Defining Upscale in a Resort Town

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

A basic trip to Los Cabos, Mexico implies a large hotel room with a view of the beach. Within minutes of putting your bathing suit on, you'll have sand between your toes. This sort of baseline can make it tough for a hotel to stand out. If every one is within striking distance of that lovely turquoise water – and each has an attentive staff and cozy digs – what can one hotel do differently? Upon entering my room at Hoteles Marquis Los Cabos, I learned the answer: everything.

You realize that Hoteles Marquis is a special resort when you pull into the driveway. A covered outdoor lobby is framed by a dramatic space, with the curved walls leading your eye to a carefully designed display that links the statue to the pool to the water ... and ultimately to the horizon. Practicality is not sacrificed for the sake of design, however, as cool air is corralled to offset the powerful Cabo sun only footsteps away. The registration process is as swift as it can be, and a refreshing drink makes it a bit more enjoyable. Hey, forms have to be filled out and credit cards imprinted – nature of the beast.

Karim Rashid Disk Chair

The cool design and home blog Apartment Therapy (AT) always has a fresh idea. I've been reading it periodically for a few years, and every time I do, I vow to completely redo my space. Anyway ... The site recently featured a summertime-appropriate post on the Disk Chair, designed by Karim Rashid and made by Ferlea to look like a "spoon folded." AT noted it would be great for poolside or patio, as it's made of fiberglass over a steel frame, but AT commenters had a good point: seems like a sweatfest waiting to happen on a hot day. I think it looks fun and comfortable, albeit maybe with a cushier seat or a towel. Available in black, yellow or white; includes a single foam and polyester cushion. Owo Italia has it for a bit more than $2,000 (European pricing).

View To A Pool

In this sweltering summer heat a dip in the pool is delightful. If you don't have access to one right now, take a pass through this gallery of luxury pools. I was pleased to see that some of them are in houses we've seen before as estates of the day such as the lavish Champ D'Or in Texas and a magnificent pool in Belle Terre, New York as well as pools that were new to me in home as far-ranging as Vermont and Arizona. Fabulous but I do think they should add the pool at Terra Bella to the list.

Best Hotel Swimming Pools

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

There is nothing like an amazingly beautiful pool to coax even the most reluctant vacationers to don their swimwear and slide into the water. As much as we wish that we were the ones to do the traveling involved in picking out ten of the world's best swimming pools, Forbes Traveler took care of it for us. Their list of must-visit pools includes the Intercontinental Hong Kong's three luxurious pools, including one of the largest outdoor pools - feng shui-inspired, no less! - in Hong Kong. La Casa Que Canta in Zihuatanejo, Mexico has in infinity pool (pictured) that plunges into the ocean and many "private pool suites." The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas has a massive beach-themed pool with a swim-up blackjack area and bar at the center. Read the rest of the list for more info on the other seven picks.
