The Television Easel from Restoration Hardware

Bachelor pads and home theaters may be appropriate venues for making your flatscreen television the centerpiece of the room, but for those looking for something a little more original, a little more...artistic, Restoration Hardware offers this television easel.

Styled to look like an artist's easel, the flatscreen stand is crafted from mahogany, hand-lacquered, fitted with integrated storage for components and cables, and can accommodate screens up to 60 inches large. Plasma and LCD televisions that big don't come cheap, but then neither does this stand, at a nickel under a grand.

Mirror Collage Plasma TV Cabinet

Some plasma televisions are works of art in and of themselves and to hide them would be a shame. But most aren't so fabulous and are better kept out of sight when not in use. There are lots of clever ways to conceal a flat-screen television - I've seen them behind panels, paintings and drapes as well as inside pop-up entertainment centers. But as far as a remedy to the unsightly black hole of the television, this one gets points for creativity. Wood-framed beveled mirrors of different sizes overlap in an artful arrangement that not only hides your flat-screen television, but adds light and space to your room. The overall dimensions are 71"W x 11"D x 51" and the cabinet will accommodate most 50" plasma televisions. $4649.

The evolution of plasma televisions which provide theater-like experiences continues onward with the introduction of the huge 65-inch Vidikron VP-6500VHD television. It has 1920 x 1080 (1080p) resolution and is the first plasma display to achieve THX certification for video quality and performance. This is important for those looking to approximate the cinema experience at home. It also has Vidikron's IntelliWide™ mode which allows for viewing of all 4:3 content in a 16:9 widescreen format, filling the entire 65-inch screen without appreciable picture degradation. It has a brushed anodized aluminum frame but is also available with a black frame. The VP-6500VHD sells for $19,995.

DNA Gloframe

We have seen some interesting things that have designs inspired by DNA, but the DNA Gloframe actually turns DNA into a work of art. The designer, DNA 11, will use a sample of your own genetic code for the piece so that your Gloframe will truly be unique to you. The frame is about 1-inch thick and looks similar to a plasma screen TV, with a proprietary backlighting technology that ensures an even lighting throughout the piece. There are seven color tints available, if the standard green hue strikes you as resembling a prop in a science fiction movie. Price: $900 (small) or $1,300 (large).

Boasting 4-pounds of 24-karat gold plating, the LG 71PY10 plasma-screen TV is not only the world's shiniest plasma screen, but also one of the world's largest commercially available. At an impressive 71-inches, the TV is HD ready and comes with 600W speakers, also in gold, for high-quality surround sound. The only problem with the television is that it might take attention away from whatever is being watched on it. It is available at Harrods and retails for £70,000. For those wishing to make less of a statement with their television, LG also makes an all-black version for £50,000.

The TV Wars of CES

One of the reasons we love watching the news coming out of CES is the one-upsmanship from the various companies. The TV wars are in full effect. Samsung debuted their 102" plasma TV only to be immediately upstaged by Matsushita's 103" version. How big is too big? We are not sure but it will be interesting to see how interior designers try to accommodate these monster designs in home decor.
