Eclipse Concept Jet

The latest plane from Eclipse Aviation is the Eclipse Concept Jet, a a single-engine four-place aircraft. The concept plane represents Eclipse's vision of what a single engine VLJ should be. It's not for sale and is being used for market research.

Aero News Network was there for the first flight of the plane, a 70 minute trip on July 2, and has photos and videos of the experience. The plane was built in just over 200 days. The goal is to have the the plane hit goals of 345 knots, 41,000 feet and a range in excess of 1250 nautical miles. No word yet on when or if the concept will go into production.

Concorde Parts up for Auction

Maybe you never got a chance to fly on the Concorde before the last flight in 2003, but soon you will have the opportunity to own a piece of it. Beginning September 28th and continuing through October 1st, 835 lots of Concorde related items will be sold to the highest bidder. Included in the sale is everything from spare parts to pilot's uniforms, with most bids expected to range from $67-$400. If you have a little more to spend and possibly a larger place to house your collection, you can bid on the plane's landing gear, which weighs 1.5 tons and is expected to fetch upwards of $2,700. Don't be surprised if these estimates are low. In 2003, the Concorde's trademark needle nose sold for $634,000 although it was valued at only $13,000.

The proceeds of the auction will finance a planned airline park in the French City of Toulou. The Aeroscopia will open in 2010 and feature the history of Aerospatiale Toulouse, the maker of Concorde.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner VIP Edition

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which we heard about last October, just might be the fastest selling airplane in aviation history. It seems like all the big dogs want one, the latest being Hong Kong real estate tycoon Joseph Lau with his $153 million dollar 787 Dreamliner VIP Edition order. Once completed the Boeing will have 2,400+ square feet of luxurious space filled with amenities like vaulted ceilings, spiral staircases, and video wall displays.

And on a related note, new pictures have been released of the even bigger 4,786 sq foot 747 Dreamliner, complete with Skyloft feature. Gorgeous!

Aruba has New Airport Terminal for Private Jets

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Wings

Fancy a trip to Aruba? Hate commercial flying and been frustrated in the past with lack of accommodations for your private jet? I'm more of a wannabe than an expert when it comes to globetrotting and travel, so in this case I'm not sure if I'm surprised that Aruba has lacked a terminal just for private jets or not. Being the romantic island getaway that it is I would have thought it would be a priority, but then it is a tropical island and they don't generally follow the normal rules and expectations ever anyway.

But none of that really matters now, as Aruba has finally opened a terminal for private jets -- apparently in a specific effort to attract more upscale patrons. It even has separate customs and immigration so travelers can get through faster and bypass the main terminal altogether.

BMW Enters The Jet Design Business With The 787 VIP Business Jet

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Luxury Cars & Autos, Wings

After designing such beauties as the stunning 3-series, M Coupe, 6-series and other models in the recent rollout of all-new BMWs, the DesignWorks design team took a little hiatus to work on the automobile's sky-faring cousin, the airplane.

Our sister site Gadling brings the news to us that DesignWorks unveiled some concept drawings at the Hamburg Aircraft Interiors Expo of the ultra-luxury 787 Business Jet, targeted toward, say, a rich 30-something Russian businessman "spends a significant amount of time traveling across the globe and needs an aircraft that function as a second home."

The plane is decked out with white leather lounge chairs and burgundy accent pillows, a full bar, artwork, luxury bedroom accommodations and glass areas on the floor so passengers can keep an eye on their rides in the garage below.

Decor that Will (and Won't) Fly on a Private Jet

The whole idea of having a private jet, besides the obvious privacy aspect, is that you get to have it decorated however you want, right? Maybe not, depending on exactly what features you're after. Any plane that wants to fly in U.S. airspace has the Federal Aviation Administration to comply with, and no matter how fancy you make it a plane just isn't any fun when it's stuck sitting on the ground.

On the bright side, many features can be modified or changed to where they're still enjoyable but don't break any laws -- like chandeliers are okay if they're retractable, and you can have all the heavy mahogany and big screen TVs you want as long as you're willing to trade off in terms of increased fuel and lower over-all capacity for things like passengers and cargo.

So what isn't okay, ever, on a plane? An open flame, which automatically rules out features like fireplaces and gas stoves.

But as long as you have a golden toilet, who cares.

MyJets Fractional Seat Ownership

I'm not someone who does a lot of travel for work, but for those who do the costs of flying back and forth can really add up, both in money and in time. To appeal to part of that large market of people, MyJets is now offering a program called FSO, or Fractional Seat Ownership.

For a one time fee of only $40,000 per seat (ouch) and then a cost of $150 per hour of flight time (plus a small monthly fee), you too can have the convenience of a private jet -- only without the private part. Albeit you will save time not driving to and from a big commercial airport and not waiting through long security lines and all that, but the price still seems a bit steep, doesn't it? I guess for some in very specific situations it might be economical and/or convenient, but I'd be really curious just what the conditions are like on board the plane. The photos don't look all that convincing...or maybe it's just me?

More Pics Of The Private Airbus A380

Ask and you shall receive! Well, little by little at least. Last month Deidre wished for pictures of something other than the dining room of the Private Airbus A380 (as glorious as it may be) and today we have them. They might not be of the whirlpool, master bedroom suite, or the game room, but we do have a sketch of the desert-themed lounge and some very glamorous-looking photos of the grand entrance and VIP lounge.

There's five new pictures in all (if you don't count the dining room) and all I can say is wow. That, and I'm still waiting for a shot of that "glimmering desert mural" behind the curtain we keep hearing about.

The aptly named Remote Lands, Inc is now offering private jet journeys as a unique way to see the world. The first of these packages, called "Passionate Epicures and Insatiable Travelers," is available this year and will have room for a cozy 36 guests and is scheduled to travel to Thailand, Burma, Bhutan, India and China. Attractions include not only the locations themselves, but also best-selling authors, world-renowned chefs, and cultural experiences like attending a Thai wedding and visiting the home of a Bhutan dignitary.

Or if that sounds a little too generic for your taste, maybe a "bespoke travel package" is a better fit. Remote Lands will design an individualized Asian vacation just for you, basing it on your particular preferences and lifestyle, and offer choices including everything from bodyguards and massage therapists to audiences with Asian nobility.

LoPresti Fury Sport Airplane Puts iPod To Good Use

Can an iPod help you fly a plane? I found this article in General Aviation News fascinating. Apparently the LoPresti Fury, a fun little flyer we first wrote about way back in 2004, now has the iPod integrated into its systems. The iPod does more than just rock out your Top Gun playlist, it can be used as a digital data recorder with the ability to record some 500 hours of flight time and replay audio on demand. RJ Siegel, vice president at LoPresti is bullish on the iPod, calling it "the complete antithesis of aviation electronics: cheap, easy to replace and available on almost every street corner." He also says that prgrammers can develop all sorts of applications for the iPod.

Putin's Plane

Russian President Vladimir Putin really knows how to fly. His Ilyushin 96-300 jet packs enough bling to put almost anyone else's wings to shame. Just about everything inside the plane is gold-plated, from the taps and shower in the bathroom to the table legs and the seatbelt clasps. And that bathroom, as you might suspect from the fact that it has a full shower, is far larger than any you'll find on an ordinary plane.

Putin's plane also boasts silk-covered walls, leather seats ("upholstered by the same company that Aston Martin uses"), and a full conference room. There are flat-screen entertainment systems and, so guests will really feel at home, a dishwasher, cooker and fridge/freezer.

The plane is valued at over $19 million.

More Details On The First Private Airbus 380

Ever since I heard about the Airbus 380, the massive double-decker jumbo jet, I knew that some billionaire with a need to roam in luxury would buy one and turn it into a private jet. Now the Wall Street Journal has a story on the first private A380, a project we first heard about way back in 2005. The $300 million plane will be going to an unnamed Middle Eastern head of state who will be spending at least additional $100 million on the interior. Jet interior designer (now there's a gig to have) will be creating The Flying Palace, a plane with two dining areas, a 600-plus-square-foot master bedroom , game room and an Arabian desert-themed lounge with curtains that resemble tents and a fiber-optic mosaic of a shifting desert scene. What is most intriguing is Doret's plan to create a whirlpool tub on the plane. The tub is designed in such a way that it can rapidly drain into the cargo hold if necessary.

The Airbus A380 has been dogged by manufacturing delays and other problems and it was only this month that the press finally got to take a short flight on the plane. There are also major questions about where A380 owners will be able to land the behemoth. Most runways are too small for the plane and airports have been slow to create the expanded landing spots needed. It sounds like the owner of the A380 may be able to sympathize with Larry Ellison, the owner of the Rising Sun megayacht, it's a shame to have the most fabulous creation in the world and have nowhere to park it.
