'62 Ferrari Stars in New Monaco Auto Auction

On May 1st RM Auctions will inaugurate a new annual sale in Monaco headlined by a rare Ferrari expected to fetch up to $3.5 million. The Sporting Classics of Monaco event will be held at the Grimaldi Forum during the same weekend as the 7th Grand Prix Historique de Monaco. 80 of the world's finest motor cars will be on offer, headlined by a stunning 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina (above). One of only six short wheelbase examples bodied by Pininfarina, the Ferrari, chassis no. 3309SA was the last example built, and displayed as a factory show car at the Geneva and New York Auto Shows in 1962. The car, which recently underwent a no-expense spared, nut and bolt restoration by top tier marque specialists, won an award at this year's famed Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Widely regarded as more exclusive, powerful and luxurious than the SWB California Spider, its offering is set to garner significant attention from collectors around the world.

$28 Million Superjet Made in Siberia

Is the world ready for a $28 million Siberian superjet? Russian aerospace firm Sukhoi hopes so as it plans to begin deliveries of its Sukhoi Superjet 100 in December, undercutting established jet builders like Embraer and Bombardier. Cheap Siberian labor lowers the cost of the planes, but Sukhoi insists quality will not be compromised as it was developed in collaboration with Finmeccanica of Italy subsidiary Alenia Aeronautica, fetauring optional interiors by famed Italian design firm Pininfarina and the same parts found in more coveted craft. Its 5-seat rows setup, combining style and ergonomics, will be among the largest ever installed on regional transport aircraft thanks to a fuselage almost 18 inches larger than those of competitors.

Ferraris on Sale at Hamptons Auto Classic

As we reported last month, a rare 1957 Ferrari recently sold for $12 million, setting a new world record. That doesn't mean that all classic Ferraris are outrageously expensive, though it is a good indication that the cars are bound to significantly increase in value once the recession is in remission. At the Hamptons Auto Classic on June 13 in Bridgehampton, NY, some of the fat cats who've had to sell their fancy mansions there are apparently unloading their classic car collections as well. The star lot is this 1962 Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Cabriolet Series II, estimated at only $525,000 - $575,000; 250 GT spyders regularly fetch seven figures. One of only 200 built, the car has had a full restoration to a very high show standard including paint, leather and engine.

$8.95 Million Magnum Marine 80 by Pininfarina

Magnum Marine's wicked new $8.95 million 80-ft. speedboat (above) has lines like a supercar, which is hardly surprising since legendary Italian styling house Pininfarina, known for Ferraris and such, did the design. Florida-based Magnum, founded in 1966, is dedicated to making "sexy, high-end speedboats on a grand scale." The hand-laminated, high performance craft is powered by twin 2400 hp MTU diesels producing a top speed of about 60 mph. Even at that velocity its deep-V hull "cuts through the waves like a knife, making for a smooth, comfortable and quiet ride even in adverse sea conditions." The boat's interiors are extremely spacious and features tons of teak, large open spaces and two VIP cabins with en-suite baths, copious living and dining areas and crew accommodations.

Eurostar Trains to be Refurbished by Pininfarina

With air travel getting more expensive and becoming a bigger hassle all the time, the train has emerged as the preferred mode of transportation throughout Europe. Service between London, Brussels and Paris is carried out by the Eurostar, a high-speed train that carries passengers and vehicles underneath the English channel through the tunnel and out the other side in lightning-fast luxury. The train cars have been in service unchanged since their introduction fifteen years ago, but that's about to change as Italian design house and coachbuilder Pininfarina has been awarded the undoubtedly lucrative contract to refinish them. The company has a well-earned reputation in the automotive industry, having designed the majority of new Ferraris for the past several decades, to say nothing of countless others. The refurbishment process is set to kick off shortly, but the first of the new train cars won't be in service before 2012.

Pininfarina's Financial Woes

When it comes to car design, Italian company Pininfarina is one of the greats. The design firm has also lent its name to wine, furniture and even a hotel. Now Pininfarina is the latest victim of the economic fallout. The founding family of Pininfarina has been forced to sell its 50.6% stake in the company in order to get out from under a mountain of debt. Buyers for the stake may include Vincent Bolloré, who already is working with Pininfarina on an electric car and Ratan Tata of the Tata car company which is already working on bailing out Jaguar Land Rover in Britain. Pininfarina is associated with many of the best models of Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo models but it is when the company began making cars themselves that they ran into trouble. When sales fell off, Pininfarina found themselves in financial trouble. The company is getting out of its contracts with Alfa Romeo and Ford and will focus on electric car production.

Pininfarina Wine

Pininfarina, the Italian design house, that has designed for Ferrari, Maserati and Rolls-Royce now has a wine label. Pininfarina wine debuted at the Concorso Italiano earlier this month in Monterey, CA. The inaugural release of 2005 Vino Rosso was tasted by throngs of spectators and a three liter bottle was auctioned off for $3,000 to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The 2005 Pininfarina Napa Valley Vino Rosso is a Napa Valley red that is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon,29% Cabernet Franc, 6% Sangiovese and 5% Petit Verdot. The wine has black currant and raspberry aromas with a balance of fruit and ripe, fat tannins. It can be drunk now but the winemaker's notes say that it will start to show its prime between 2010 and 2012, with the ultimate peak for this wine being probably between 2017 and 2021. While the label doesn't use the classic Pininfarina red color there is sleek carbon fiber like detail surrounding the label. There were 1,125 cases produced and bottles sell online for $95 each.

$1.5 Million Chair Designed by Pininfarina

Italian car design firm, Pininfarina, is well known for projects with Ferrari and Maserati but their innovation hasn't stopped with luxury vehicles. Their newest project is definitely a departure from the auto industry -- creating the Aresline Xten ergonomic office chair. This chair is for the most elite of CEO's with mega-budgets as the single piece of furniture cost the design company about $1.5 million to develop -- who knows how much they will charge to purchase one of your very own! Currently available in UAE through OFIS, the chair's impressive materials include a dynamic fabric used by Olympic athletes for durability and a substance called Technogel. Are we talking sprinter's spandex material or the seat of the equestrian team's pants? Either way this premier piece of office equipment with its iconic affiliation is sure to be coveted by many corporate giants.

Pininfarina Building Custom Rolls-Royce Hyperion

The Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe is the basis for a privately commissioned one-off to be built by Pininfarina. The buyer/collector remains anonymous at this point, and although there aren't many details available we do know that the car will be named Hyperion (of Greek mythology) and the inspiration for the car's style will be pre-war Rolls-Royce models.

Look for the car to debut in August at Pebble Beach. Maybe then we'll get to see the who the mystery owner is? (And find out how much this baby cost!).

PF 36 Limited Edition Powerboat

Pininfarina Extra, the product and interior design arm of Italian design house Pininfarina has worked with powerboat manufacturer, Challenger Powerboats to create the PF 36 Limited Edition Powerboat. The boat has a sleek racy look and has a A Duo-Delta Conic hull design that merges two hulls into one for optimal stability, handling and speed. It has twin Mercury EU662sci and 662HP engines and can hit a top speed of 90-95 MPH. The small cabin includes Cantalupi LED RGB adjustable indirect lighting controlled by touch screen, a flat screenTV, DVD and iPod ready sound system, a bar complete with sink/refrigerator and Dock Side air-conditioning all finished with Pininfarina styled upholstery and Pininfarina-styled Bolster seats in the cockpit. The boat also has electrically controlled Spoilers.

Pininfarina Luna Desk

The look of a Pininfaria design is unmistakable, usually red or black, often with shiny metal trim. The company most famous for the Ferrari has a streamlined style that seems to be able to work on anything from hard drives to chairs to hotels. The latest option is the Luna Desk which has a thick glass top and arched asymmetrical legs but the most eye-catching part is the giant red leather inlay (also available in black). The desk sells for $12,885.

World's Most Expensive Ferrari

This is a man with a lot of money. After pulling up past his Porsche Cayenne and personal gas pump in a Maserati, New York Hedge Fund manager Jim Glicknehaus swaps cars for a Ferrari Enzo-turned retro '60s sports car.

Glickenhaus liked the 330 P3/4-era Ferraris so much that he took his Enzo out to Turin, Italy, to recreate the classic cars based on state-of-the-art technology. The entire upgrade cost $4 million on top of the $1 million sticker price on the Enzo all by its lonesome.

Among the upgrades include a complete overhaul of the body, redesigned and rebuilt by Pininfarina, 20' wheels wrapped in fatter tires, beautiful, custom-made fabric (picked out by his wife? Daughter? I'm not one to judge, I just don't know), and a raised "cut line" to allow for easier access to the monster living underneath the hood.

Ferrari liked the overhaul so much that they approved badging the vehicle as a bona fide Ferrari.

The hotel market in San Diego, California is getting hot. The Keating, a new hotel set to open in the fall, brings Italian chic to this Southern California town. With all that red in the virtual mock-up there can only be one Italian source, Pininfarina,the ultra-chic designers who created some of our favorite Ferraris and Maseratis. The 35-room Keating is their first hotel design. The Keating is one of San Diego's oldest buildings and has a Romanesque Revival façade but a modern sleek interior. This is also another one of those hotels that is eliding the the bedroom/bathroom concept into one combined area. Amenities will include personalized in-room check-in, goose down feather bed and goose down duvet, Egyptian cotton linens,plasma televisions, in-room LavAzza espresso machines and plush bathrobes. Phase two of the project will include a signature restaurant adjacent to the main hotel, a rooftop glass bottom pool and eight additional premium suites.
