Avedon's Photographs Head To Auction

A collection of the photographs of legendary master Richard Avedon will head to auction November 20 at Christie's in Paris. The Avedon Foundation is selling photographs from its archive to raise money to create an endowment to promote the work and legacy of the photographer. The image shown above, "Dovima with Elephants," an over seven-foot-tall image that graced Avedon's New York City Studio, is estimated to sell for $500,000 to $700,000. The total of over 60 photographs is hoped to bring in between $3.7 million and $6 million.

Avedon, who died in 2004 was famous for both his glamorous fashion work starring models like Jean Shrimpton, Veruschka and Twiggy in the 1960s and 1970s as well as for later images of stark portraiture. He was on assignment for the New Yorker when he died at the age of 81. This auction will be the largest auction of Avedon's images. His personal belongings were auctioned off in 2005 around the time his house was sold.

Photo of Yeti Footprint Sold for £3,500

Do believe in the yeti? The infamous "Abominable Snowman?" I'm more than a little skeptical, but I can still get on board with this photo that sold at Christie's in London last week for £3,500 because it looks like a fun conversation piece.

The Abominable Snowman is in the same league as Bigfoot and the Lochness Monster, but art and photography don't always have to be about truth or some kind of deep meaning -- sometimes pure entertainment is reason enough to value something.

But I have to say, doesn't this look the footprint of a large teddy bear? Big round toes, no claws or anything...maybe it was just that friendly "Bumble" from Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer?

Get Your Picture Taken By Mary McCartney at the Mandarin Oriental

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

If you've always wanted your picture taken by a celebrity photographer here's your chance. Hotel Chatter reports that the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London is offering a new luxury package, the Mary McCartney Portrait Experience. Mary McCartney (the daughter of Paul and his photographer wife Linda) has taken the photographs of a wide variety of rock stars (she's a regular photographer for Interview magazine) as well as actors such as Jude Law and Ralph Fiennes and even Tony and Cherie Blair. McCartney has been appointed the official photographer for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group's `I'm a Fan' brand campaign which also features celebrities. The two-night package includes a feature suite, a two-hour spa ritual to prepare, Champagne breakfast daily, a bottle of vintage Champagne and an a la carte dinner for two in the restaurant, Foliage. The package starts at £20,000 and is limited to just ten guests. And I'm assuming that asking questions about her famous dad and his recent divorce are probably off limits.
