Pets Cruise with You on the Queen Mary 2

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Pets

Now going on a luxury cruise doesn't mean getting sad puppy eyes as you book a boarding house for your favorite pet -- the Atlantic cruise liner Queen Mary 2 gives you the option of bringing them along! The amenities of their "Pets on Deck" program include fresh-baked biscuits at turn-down, a variety of bedding and blanket options, and even a little coat with the QM2 logo. All pet guests also receive a complimentary gift pack with a mix of essentials and fun stuff, such as a food dish with scoop, a name tag, a frisbee, and a complimentary portrait with their owners.

As a dog owner I think it's great when vacations are pet-friendly, but in this case I can't help but wonder: do people's pets ever get seasick? That would not be pleasant!

Pet Doors in French Doors

When you have a yard for your pets to play in, it is lovely to be able to let them out just to be animals for a bit. A pet door is just about the only way to give them easy access to the great outdoors at all times without having to sit by the door. Unfortunately, many doors are not really conducive to having pet doors - traditional ones, at least - installed. Hale Pet Doors has a fantastic custom pet door that is designed to work in French doors, where a pane of glass is replaced with a barely noticeable flap. Sizes vary, but you can't beat the subtlety of the design. And your pets will be happy, too! Prices range from $115 - $465, depending on model.

Lotus Cat Scratcher

Elegant, yet functional, the Lotus Cat Scratcher is the ideal cat toy for those who want to keep their cat's favorite scratching post out where they can access it, without putting an eyesore in the room. The sleek scratcher is made of solid pine and is available with birch, cherry or mahogany stains. It has ledges for perching, carpeted areas for scratching and a cubbyhole at the base that serves as a hiding place, as well as for support. The curving, balanced design is pleasing to the eye, which is a huge plus, as its height of almost 6 feet (69") will make it a focal point in the room. Price: $295.

Dogirondack Chair

The chair comes in two sizes, small (20"H x 30" W x 25" D), for pets up to 25lbs, and large (23"H x 44" W x 33" D), for big dogs or for pairs who don't mind snuggling up. Dog Perignon

Did you know that there is a beer for dogs? The malted drink is nonalcoholic, uncarbonated, brewed without hops and flavored with beef for your pet's drinking pleasure. Dogs seem to like it, but if you're uncomfortable with the idea of giving your pet beer - even a nonalcoholic one - you might want to stick to a toy version of a favorite alcoholic drink. Dog Perignon is a faux bubbly, plush squeak toy that will last your dog a lot longer than a beer. The only thing that would make it better would be if the squeaking sound could be replaced with the "pop" of a real cork. Price: $12.

Platinum Dog Parklane Carrier

The smaller the dog it is designed to carry, the more luxurious and more expensive dog carriers become. After all, like any other status symbol, luxe dog carriers are designed to be seen and you are far more likely to take yours along with you if you have a teacup pup than a lab. The Parklane Carrier is intended for a dog from 3-10 pounds and, according to the manufacturer, the Italian-made bag could be described as the Ferrari of dog carriers. It is made of ultra-soft lambskin, has four windows with pull down, magnet-secured flaps and is airline approved. It measures 9.8" x 19.9" x 10.6". Price: $1,700.

Antonia Leather Pet Carrier

Custom-made in Italy, each Antonia Leather Pet Carrier is a far cry from the standard issue dog bags that you're likely to find elsewhere. The carriers are made of fine leather and have numerous mesh-lined grommets to provide ventilation while keeping your pet safe. The interior has a water-resistant nylon lining and there is a double top zipper, making it easy to get animals in and out of the bag. Shoulder straps are made of soft, rolled leather and the bag includes a matching luggage tag for travel. The color pictured is "pumpkin," but there are a variety of others to choose from if you want something that flatters you (or your pup) more. Price: $900.

It's a Dog's Life on Cyprus

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels, Pets

On Cyprus, different beaches appeal to different people, but they all have one thing in common: no dogs are allowed on them. The rule is in place to make sure the beaches stay clean for bathers. Perhaps tired of enforcing the policy, or simply tired of hearing complaints from dog-lovers, the authorities on the holiday island are considering changing the rules to give dogs (and presumably their owners) their own beach. No location has been picked out yet, but a dog-only beach is sure to be a big draw with pet owners.

Lulu's Hideaway

Lulu's Hideaway is a mathematician's dream, although it is actually meant for pets and not for people. The unusually shaped pet bed is made from a truncated cube, which is a cube that has basically had he corners snipped off to create triangular surfaces. It is an unusual polyhedron and even more unusual for this particular purpose, but that just makes it fare more visually interesting than the vast majority of pet beds. It measures 17.7" x 17.7" x 17.7" and is made of acrylic, with a white exterior, purple interior and octagonal entry. Price: $550.

GW Little Gilded China Dish and Treat Jar

GW Little's Gilded Dish and Treat Jar set is made with fine china and looks to be more formal than most of the dinnerware intened for pets, primarily because it is likely to coordinate well with your own fine China dishes. Both the bowl and the jar have 24-karat gilding applied by hand, including the custom pet name that is on the food bowl, and the jar also bears a golden dog bone handle. Platinum can be used in place of the gold unpon request. Price: $115.

Rare Earth Luxe Pet Crates

We spend a lot of time checking out posh pet houses and luxurious beds, but the reality of the matter is that sometimes you need to lock up man's best friend. Whether you are introducing a new puppy, going to (gasp!) the vet or simply want to make sure that your pet is out of the way during a party, a well-designed pet crate can certainly come in handy. Rare Earth Furnishings, which also makes the Beastro Pet Table, sells this custom-made pet crate, the Grate, as well. The Grate comes in various sizes according to breed and will fit MinPins, Rottweilers and everything in between. It includes a plush, custom-colored cushion to keep animals comfortable and is reinforced at the corners with a spring-loaded latch for security. Price: $658

Rare Earth Beastro Pet Table

The Beastro Pet Table was styled after a more conventional bistro bar, then scaled down topped with a couple of dog-sized serving bowls. The table is handcrafted from "layered Baltic birch" and retains the natural, attractive wood grain pattern even though the various stains that can be added to it. Not only is the table good for Fido's meals (raising the bowls is said to help with digestion), but this one has a built-in cabinet for storing food, pet supplies or anything else that a pampered pup needs. The table comes in three sizes for medium, large, and extra large dog breeds, but is not available in very small sizes because the utility of the cabinet would be compromised. Prices start at $525 depending on size and choice of finish.

Petite Pups Trendy, but Problematic in Japan

The craze for miniature dogs isn't limited to American celebrities. The petite pets are popular in both Australia and Japan, although in Japan, the intensity of the interest in the trend is pushing breeders to try to meet Japanese desire for ever-smaller and ever-cuter puppies. And that is leading to some real problems for the animals. Inbreeding has led to crippled or deformed animals and puppy mills are producing more animals than the public can handle.

The most popular breeds at the moment are ones that are naturally small, such as chihuahuas. It is especially popular to get them in exotic colors, like the blue-grey puppy pictured. These unusual colors are recessive traits and repeatedly breeding for them, often using the same couple of dogs and their offspring because they are known to have the genes, is what causes the dogs to have unfortunate genetic defects. Many are killed at birth, but others lack limbs or are prone to deafness, eye problems and nervous disorders.

A prized puppy can go for as much as $10,000, making it worthwhile for some breeders to pursue these dogs in spite of the risks to the dogs themselves. Breeders are left to self-regulate, but as long as the demand is high, so will the temptation for unscrupulous breeders.

Ostrich Leather Collar & Lead Set

It has become so common to see dogs dressed in little sweaters or tucked away in a handbag that the standard collar-leash combo has almost fallen out of fashion. Fortunately for those whose dogs are a bit too large to put up with wearing puffy pink sweaters, it hasn't and a high-quality set makes a great gift for the non-frilly pet lover. This Ostrich Collar & Lead Set has fine ostrich leather on a plain leather backing accented with brass hardware, including a loop for the lead to attach to. The set is also available with a harness instead of a straight collar and comes in four colors. Price: $350.
