Penderyn Releases Celtic Manor 2011 Ryder Cup Edition Whisky

Penderyn, the Welsh whisky distiller, is releasing a special edition whisky to celebrate The Celtic Manor Resort, the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup on October 1-3.

The Penderyn Celtic Manor 2010, launched on September 8th, is limited to 200 bottles and was commissioned by The Celtic Manor Resort to commemorate the event.

The whisky is a unique Welsh single malt matured in a single Oloroso Sherry cask. Each bottle will be presented in a hand-made tulip wood box, crafted in South Wales by the fine furniture maker Giancarlo Bianchi.

The taste profile: Big fruity Sherry notes. Raisins and creamy toffee. Hints of oak from the Spanish oak cask.

Welsh Single-Malt Penderyn Making Strides Without Long Aging

penderyn whiskyWhen the Penderyn Distillery began distributing its single-malt whisky in 2004, expectations were not that high. After all, it was the first time whisky had been distilled for mass distribution in Wales in over a century. Also, the age of the whisky was just four and half years.

But the lesson here is that whisky doesn't have to be old to be good, or even great. Penderyn has not only been racking up the accolades, but it has added expressions that have been largely applauded and recognized as some of the best small-batch whisky in the British Isles, and the world.

The distillery is located in the village of Penderyn, in the southern reaches of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The water used for the whisky is pumped from a spring under the distillery. The barley-wash mash that gets distilled comes from Brains Brewery in nearby Cardiff. And as the only Welsh singe-malt, Penderyn has what any good whisky needs--a good story.

Penderyn, Estate of the Day

It might look like an old English manor but Penderyn along the Wye River in Queenstown, Maryland was built in the 1980s. The Palladian lines of the home are designed to make it look like a contemporary of the 1780's Wye Hall manor. The nine-bedroom brick manor sits on a 17-acre peninsula with its own pier. The estate is named after a village in Wales. The Wye River is also named after the Wye River in Wales. The home has a 60-foot long arched hall lined with busts, urns and jars. The home is full of all sorts of antiquities including a 19th-century English chandelier by Perry and most of the fireplace fronts in the home are antique pieces from country estates in England. Other features include a bar, an observatory, formal drawing room and a marble foyer. This home is listed at $14.9 million.
