Diva's Pearls Go For Over $1 Million

You may never have heard of Umm Kulthoum but she's famous in the Arab world. In her day she was at least as popular as Marie Callas. She died over three decades ago and one of her prized jewels was just auctioned off for $1.38 million in Dubai by Christie's. The nine-strand necklace is made up of 1,888 pearls and brought in more than 10 times its $120,000 estimate. The reason for the high price is the immense sentimental value, it was her favorite piece, given to her by the late president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The necklace had remained in Kulthoum's family and was auctioned by her descendants.

We don't know too much about this watch except that is will be introduced during the SIHH show in Switzerland in April. The Cartier Perles watch is part of the Cartier Libre watch collection which also includes Cartier's Crash watches. The Cartier Perle is done in 18K white gold with 389 diamonds (a total of 2.9 carats) and highlighted by two pearls. The movement is a Swiss quartz module. The style is very striking but it looks like might be awkward to wear.

No Sale For Marie Antoinette's Pearls or Orson's Oscar

Both Christie's and Sotheby's had auctions this week with some very important items that failed to sell. Perhaps the last few weeks before the Christmas holiday is not the best time to hold big auctions, although certainly either one of these items could have made a once-on-a-lifetime present.

The only Oscar given to Orson Welles, the one for writing Citizen Kane, did not receive a suitable bid and Sotheby's pulled it off the auction block. All offers were well below the minimum price set by the seller. It was hoped that the Oscar would sell for between $800,000 and $1.2 million, raising money for the Dax Foundation, a Los Angeles-based charitable group. The statuette may now be sold privately. A screenplay of Citizen Kane did bring in $97,000.

For Christie's it was a set of historic pearls that turned out not to sell. The pearls which had been given by Marie Antoinette to a British countess for safekeeping after she was imprisoned during the French Revolution, did not sell during the Christie's Magnificent Jewels sale on Wednesday. The pearls, which were later set into a necklace containing rubies and diamonds, were estimated to sell for up to $815,000.

Kelly Klein's Pearls Sell High At Auction

They say jewelry is a bad investment but it depends on what you buy. Calvin Klein, who bought jewels belonging to the Duchess of Windsor for Kelly Klein made quite a return on his investment. The collection of natural pearls the couple put up for sale brought in $4.82 million, far above the $3.1 million high estimate. I hope whoever bought it wears it, wearing pearls helps them keep their luster.

The jewels were part of the Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels auction in New York Tuesday in which 366 lots went for a total for $48.827 million. Other expensive pieces included a pair of Harry Winston diamond pendant-earrings that sold for $3.961 million and a pear-shaped 32.16 carat Harry Winston diamond ring which went for $3.289 million. The Jewels for the Jungle auction also did well bringing in a total of $1.181 million for the World Wide Fund for Nature.

Marie Antoinette's Pearls Up For Auction

Recently I told you about the gorgeous pearls that will hit the block at Sotheby's in December. Of course, their toughest competitor Christie's also has a jewel auction in December with another set of pearls with historical provenance. The necklace shown here is made of natural pearls, diamonds and rubies and will go on sale at Christie's in London on December 12. The pearls once graced the neck of Marie Antoinette and were smuggled out of revolutionary France by Lady Elizabeth, the Countess of Sutherland. The pearls were later mounted onto a necklace for the wedding of Lady Elizabeth's grandson and have remained in the family for over 200 years. The necklace was made in 1849 and has a fringe of 21 graduated drop-shaped gray natural pearls, each suspended from an old-cut diamond collet, and connected to a diamond ribbon which intertwines with a ruby collar. The collar is set with 12 button-shaped gray natural pearls mounted in gold. This amazing piece is estimated to sell for between £350,000 and £400,000.

Filed under: Jewelry, Auctions, Celebrity Shopping

The Magnificent Jewels auction at Sotheby's on December 4 offers the chance to bid on three lots of natural pearl and diamond jewels from the collection of Kelly and Calvin Klein. The pieces are a necklace, pendant and ear clips that were purchased by Calvin for Kelly at Sotheby's 1987 auction of "The Jewels of the Duchess of Windsor" in Geneva. The single-strand natural pearl and diamond necklace by Cartier once belonged to Queen Mary who gave it to the Duke of Windsor. It consists of 28 natural pearls, bulbous and luminous, with a diamond clasp. The natural pearl and diamond pendant contains a 190.6-grain pearl topped by diamonds. The Kleins are also selling a pair of natural black and white pearl and diamond ear clips by Van Cleef and Arpels. The three lots have an estimated value of $2.2 million-$3.1 million. In the press release, Kelly Klein is quoted as saying that she hopes the pearls will be "given again, as they have been in the past, as a gesture of love and worn often and proudly.

Mikimoto And Yohji Yamamoto Show Off Stormy Weather

I knew that when Mikimoto jewelers teamed up with designer Yohji Yamamoto the results would be interesting and they don't disappoint. The end result is a 29-piece collection called Stormy Weather. As you might suspect from the name, the line is moody and innovative with pieces that evoke both rough weather and a sort of celestial feeling. A necklace features pearls nearly enclosed in with gold discs with different sized openings that correspond to the phases of the moon. The line was unveiled in Paris last week and the International Herald Tribune's Suzy Menkes calls it a " powerful mix of elegance and edge." The pieces range in price from a $1,100 swirling silver cuff to a the moon necklace which sells for $55,000. The line will be available at Yohji Yamamoto and Mikimoto stores starting in November. More pictures of the debut of the line can also be found here.

Diamond In A Pearl Jewelry

Prince sang about "Diamonds and Pearls" but what about diamonds in pearls? Chi Huynh, a gem and jewelry artist of Galatea: Jewelry by Artist in San Dimas, California has found a way to put faceted diamonds inside cultured pearls. As you probably know, cultured pearls are made by inserting a bead into the mollusk so creates layers of nacre over the bead. Chi Huynh wanted to put gemstone beads inside Tahitian black lipped oysters so that he could carve the pearls revealing the precious center. Unable to find any one to help him with this experiment in the French Polynesian Islands he turned to Vietnam. A few years later he was able to harvest Tahitian-like black pearls with gemstone centers. The most pearls are then carved and mounted in jewelry. The necklace shown here is a 10-10.5mm pearl with a .20 carat diamond and sells for $1,825.

Sonya Ooten Pearl Necklace

I'm a fan of Sonya Ooten's jewelry designs and not just because she lives in my town. Her pieces draw from both her Native American ancestry and European roots, as a child she was taught Native American weaving and beading techniques from one grandmother while she learned crochet and tatting from another. She now creates crochet nets of gold and silver for precious gemstones. The necklace shown here is a trio of South Sea pearls cradled in 14K gold fishnet on a 22" chain. The piece is available in 14K rose or yellow gold and sells for $1,875.
