Montana's Paws Up Resort Preparing the Second Annual Wine & Bitch Weekend

Let's not pretend the recession hasn't been hard on Fifi, too – a solid year-and-a-half of listening to you and the rest of the gang go on and on about the economy. And don't even get her started on this whole staycation thing. If you want to show her some love and get a whole bunch of it yourself, The Resort at Paws Up in Montana, just outside of Missoula, will be putting on its second Wine & Bitch Weekend next month.

Three days and two nights in a land that only Ken Burns could do justice will be spent in a vacation home on a 37,000-acre property. Everything is included: three gourmet meals for two, every day, training and wellness seminars, doggie massages and hikes, and wine tastings from the thematically appropriate Mutt Lynch Winery. A canine fashion show is also on the cards, and you'd be surprised how well the dogs dress in the state of gold and silver.

Your calendar will be looking for room from April 23-25 for the event, and your Luxembourg account will be looking for $1,825 to transfer, which takes care of two adults and one pooch. Having stayed there ourselves, the resort and its views are phenomenal, so if you can't make it that weekend you might hop on over to Gilt's Jetsetter where they're having a sale on stays at Paws Up for other dates as we ~~speak~~ write...

Jetsetter Betters the Odds on Upscale Travel

There's a gap in the upscale travel market right now. The companies that plan these limited-access excursions aren't selling as much as they used to, and once-upon-a-time buyers still have a thirst for the experiences not available to the general public – but not at the prices they paid before the recession. A new website, Jetsetter, is planning to help luxury travel planners and buyers meet in the middle.

Jetsetter, now in beta, bills itself as a "flash-sale website" for the up-market. This Gilt Groupe enterprise is invitation-only. So, the opportunities provided are not subject to the mass competition of the entire travel market. Nonetheless, inventory is likely to move quickly, and the window within which to act is not wide. "International trip curators" roam the world to conduct primary research – including on-site visits. These experts, including veteran travel writers and industry experts, then compile their findings on Jetsetter's site, with editorial accounts and photographs used to help would-be travelers make informed decisions.

Members of the online community will receive e-mail alerts every evening announcing the coming sales. Once that e-mail goes out – at 8 PM – the clock starts to tick.

Destinations available through Jetsetter include The Cotton House on Mustique, Negresco in Nice, the Paws Up resort in Montana (an amazing space) and Encantado in New Mexico.

Paws Up Closes For The Winter, Cuts Jobs

Just a couple of days ago, my colleague Rigel Celeste mentioned the luxury camping trend and the Paws Up Resort in Montana. But the trend doesn't seem to have been enough to keep the resort open year round. KPAX in Montana reports that 70 employees at Paws Up will lose their jobs November 1st. Paws Up, which has been a four-season resort, plans to close for the next several months during the winter season, opening up only for the Christmas and New Year holiday period but then closing down until the snow melts around mid-April. The resort says they had a record summer but can't afford to stay open in the winter months.

Glamour + Camping = Glamping (Seriously)

The camping season is still in full swing around most parts of the country, but swiftly cooling temperatures (especially at night) are beginning to weed out all but the most hardcore of tent-pitching types. The good news? You don't have to be hardcore to enjoy camping during this season, or any other, thanks to a new trend called "glamping."

Glamping (makes me laugh every time I say it) is a term derived from the phrase "glamorous camping," and the idea is to bring nature and luxury together. Amenities vary depending on where you go, but many glamping packages include things like big, plush beds in your tent, personal butlers, gourmet food, wi-fi internet access, spa services (in a tent), and top shelf wine, liquor, cigars, etc. Rates start around $695 a night for a couple and can go as high as $50,000 a week for a family.
