Geffen Edges Out Ellison to Seize Control of World's Sixth Largest Yacht

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Wealth

Music mogul David Geffen is now the sole owner of Rising Sun (above), the world's sixth largest yacht, having seized control from co-owner Larry Ellison. Originally commissioned by the Oracle billionaire from Germany's Lürssen shipyard in 2004, the 456 ft. megayacht cost about $250 million to build. After gaining possession of the craft – the terms of the deal have not been disclosed – Geffen has sent the boat back to Lurssen for some much-needed modifications while Ellison prepares to take delivery of a much smaller 298-ft. superyacht. Considerably bigger than other billionaire boats like Paul Allen's Octopus, the Rising Sun features luxe accommodations for 12 people in addition to 30 crew members and boasts a total of 82 rooms on five decks. Onyx countertops, a gymnasium, spa, sauna, wine cellar, private cinema and basketball court that converts to a helipad are some of the over-the-top touches onboard. Four MTU 20V 8000 M90 diesel engines with a combined output of 50,000 hp move the massive yacht along at up to 28 knots.

Largest Yacht Ever Built in Italy Knocks Paul Allen Off the Top 10

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Wealth

Billionaire Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen no longer owns one of the world's 10 largest yachts thanks to the just-launched Serene (above) from Fincantieri. At just under 440 ft. Serene is the largest yacht ever built in Italy, and enters the list of the world's largest yachts at No. 9, according to Camper & Nicholsons – just behind the floating brothel Savarona. That knocks Allen's famed 414-ft. Octopus out of the top 10 altogether (No. 1 of course is still, by a mere 18 inches, Roman Abramovich's Eclipse). The billionaire buyer of Serene is unknown. Designed by Espen Oeino, the Serene, which took four years to complete, has seven decks, a tender hangar and two helipads. The high-tech megayacht features a large seawater swimming pool and a submarine with a diving depth of up to 100 metres. The 4,500 square meter interior boasts super-luxe accommodations and entertaining spaces designed by Pascale Reymond of London's Reymond Langton Design.

A Peek Inside Tatoosh

We've been talking a lot about Paul Allen's Tatoosh yacht recently. We first heard in May that it was up for sale for 125 million euros (over $160 million) through Fraser Yachts. It came up again when we saw the 288-ft. Musashi built for an unnamed billionaire believed to be Paul Allen looking for a replacement for Tatoosh (the name has led some to speculate it could also belong to Larry Ellison). It came up a third time when we learned that Paris Hilton had spent time aboard Tatoosh this summer, tweeting that she was "on heaven on the water." Given that kind of recommendation we had to take a closer look. Luckily Fraser Yachts have plenty of listing pictures that offer a detailed view of the 303-foot yacht. The Tatoosh was built in 2001 by HDW Nobiskrug and refitted just this year. It has an owner's stateroom plus nine guest staterooms with room for 20 guests and 30 crew. There is a cinema, swimming pool and two helicopter decks. Other over-the-top features include a basketball court, recording studio, spa, massage room, gym and games room. Tatoosh is powered by twin DEUTZ-MWM Diesel engines and can reach a top speed of 19 knots and cruises comfortably at 15 knots.

Octopus Yacht Attempts the Northwest Passage

In California yacht watchers have been checking out the A yacht but far north a different yacht has been turning heads. CBC news says that the Octopus, Paul Allen's megayacht, has shown up in the High Arctic hamlet of Pond Inlet, Nunavut, on its way through the Northwest Passage. The 413-foot yacht has filed plans to attempt the Northwest Passage with the Canadian Coast Guard. The yacht has a 59-foot tender and a remotely-operated submarine as well as a twin helicopter hangar and two helipads. Even for a yacht this well outfitted, the Northwest Passage can be dangerous. Many vessels have run aground in the Arctic waterway. Luckily the ship has a strengthened hull for navigating the Arctic waters. It's not known if owner Paul Allen is on board, he's had his hands full lately with a patent infringement lawsuit that has him taking on Apple, Google and Facebook.

The Classicist: The Summer of Superstars Borrowing Superyachts

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Celebrity Shopping, The Classicist, Wealth

The other day we reported that Madonna has borrowed Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's brand new superyacht, the 377-ft. Luna, while filming the new Duke of WIndsor movie she's directing in the South of France. The yacht is fitted out with two helicopter pads, a covered pool, spa, medical center, hot tub and 40 staff, including butlers and a macrobiotic chef. The middle-aged Material Girl isn't the only celeb cadging a ride on a pal's superyacht this summer, however – everyone from Brad and Angelina to the Beckhams are living it up on the high seas, though some stars are actually paying their way. Here's the full rundown on the famous folk's nautical hijinks:

1. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: the world's most famous movie star couple have borrowed Johnny Depp's classic yacht, the 156-ft. Vajoliroja (above), which as we noted in April is available for charter at $130,000 per week, JustLuxe reports. The mahogany paneled craft features accommodations for 10 guests and a crew of 8, a formal dining room, library, plush salon and outdoor seating and eating areas, all decorated in Depp's signature version of Art Deco Paris meets the Orient Express.

2. David Beckham and Victoria Beckham: Posh and Becks have borrowed their pal designer Roberto Cavalli's iridescent 133-ft. yacht, the RC, which features a leopardskin interior, 15 bedrooms, a gym, whirlpool spa and locker full of fur coats for when the weather turns cool. Supposedly Cavalli only allows clothes he designed to be worn onboard.

3. Simon Cowell: The TV star is one of the few celebs footing the bill for his fun, having shelled out a whopping $975,000 per week to charter the 196-ft. Slipstream. The 12-berth yacht boasts sumptuous leather sofas, mirrors above a giant waterbed, a Jacuzzi, an observation lounge with panoramic views, gym, a sky lounge with a retractable roof and a crew of 14 including a private chef.

4. Paris Hilton: The world's biggest party girl is kicking back on Microsoft magnate Paul Allen's 300-ft. pleasure craft the Tatoosh, which as we recently reported has been put up for sale at $160 million. The yacht, which has a pool, hot tub, cinema, basketball court, recording studio, spa, massage room, gym, games room and helicopter pad, comes with a crew of 30. "The best summer of my life," Paris recently tweeted about the trip. "Our yacht is incredible! I'm in heaven on the water. Definitely the biggest and best yacht everywhere we go. Love it! Huge!" Feadship Launches Largest Yacht Ever - For Paul Allen?

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Wealth

Dutch shipyard Feadship builds some of the world's most coveted superyachts; in addition to Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's Ecstesea, the likes of Malcolm Forbes, Paul Allen and King Khalid of Saudi Arabia all commissioned luxurious vessels from them. Now the shipyard has launched its newest, largest and most expensive superyacht ever, the 288-ft. Musashi (above) built for an unnamed billionaire, leading to speculation that one of the boldfaced names on its client roster decided it was time for an upgrade. Our money is on Paul Allen, who recently listed his 303-ft. superyacht Tatoosh for sale at $160 million meaning he's probably in the market for a replacement (he still has the Octopus).

The Musashi's massive steel hull was constructed by Feadship's dedicated hull-building facility in Papendrecht, Netherlands, and was delivered to Makkum for outfitting. Her quadruple MTU 16V 4000 M90 marine diesel engines kick out a combined 14,600 hp, though the shipyard has not released any performance specs. The Musashi's naval architecture and exterior design were created by Feadship's own De Voogt Naval Architects, while the luxe interiors including an enormous master suite were done by the Netherlands' Sinot Yacht Design.

Paul Allen Joins BIll Gates By Giving Away His Fortune

Paul Allen and Bill Gates founded Microsoft and now Allen is taking a page out of Gates's book, announcing that he will give more than half of his estimated $13.5 billion fortune to philanthropy. Just last month we learned about a plan that Gates, his wife, Melinda and Warren Buffett had cooked up to get the country's billionaires to earmark half their fortunes to charitable causes. Other billionaires who have already committed to at least a 50 percent pledge include Eli and Edy Broad, John and Ann Doerr, H.F. "Gerry" and Marguerite Lenfest and John and Tashia Morgridge.

Allen already has an existing foundation, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. His projects have included the nonprofit scientific research done at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, the Allen institute and the Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum. As the NY Times reports Allen has made Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list of the nation's 50 largest donors, eight times. Last year, he ranked No. 11 for giving away $85 million.

The Classicist: The World's Greatest Luxury Yachts

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Books, The Classicist

In the rarefied world of mega yachts, the ultimate achievement is to have one designed by a certain Norwegian genius named Espen Oeino. The world's top star in naval architecture, Oeino's megabucks creations "combine the precision of fine machinery with indulgent finishes and the high-end amenities of a palace." When German luxury publisher teNeues opted to focus a volume in its amazing Luxury Toys series to the world's greatest yachts, it was quickly decided to dedicated the entire book to Oeino.

Luxury Toys: Mega Yachts showcases 20 of the Monaco-based Oeino's stellar creations accompanied by text from top yachting author Nick Jeffery, the most respected authority on luxury watercraft. Among the megayachts featured is Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's 413-ft. Octopus, the 8th largest yacht in the world and the second largest superyacht that is not owned by a head of state. The nine deck ship cost $200 million to build and has an annual operating budget estimated at $20 million.

Designed for self-sufficient long range cruising, the Octopus contains a wet dock for a 59-ft. tender and an equally large remotely-operated submarine that can descend to 2500 meters, a twin helicopter hangar and two helipads, countless giant antennae and a telescopic sonar, a cinema and music studio. Another Oeino creation featured in the book is the military-looking 233-ft. SKAT, pictured above, built by Lürssen of Bremen, Germany for Charles Simonyi, a former Microsoft software engineer and pioneering space tourist. The yacht features an elevator serving all four decks, a gymnasium, matching helicopter, and motorcycles with a special lift.

Seattle's Football Team Loses Their Private Jet

Quite a few readers had comments on the fact that David Beckham and his Los Angeles soccer squad travel by private jet. For Becks and the Los Angeles Galaxy it was an upgrade. The Seattle Seahawks football team are in the opposite position. For years they were the envy of the NFL as they travelled around on billionaire owner Paul Allen's Boeing 757-200. The private jet was seen as such an advantage that at times it was used as a perk to help land free agents. But all good things must come to an end and Paul Allen has sold the jet. According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer the Seahawks are a little grumpy about losing their jet. They've gone from their own personal aircraft to chartering with Hawaiian Airlines. Oh well boys, it could be worse, at least your new jets have pretty ladies and flowers on them.

Paul Allen Purges Tatoosh Crew Over Drug Tests

Billionaire Paul Allen recently did some housecleaning on his 302 ft megayacht, Tatoosh, after 6 crewmembers tested positive for drugs. Tatoosh has been a celebrity favorite and a popular charter yacht. Paul Allen has reportedly laid down the law for crewmembers and charter guests that no drugs whatsoever will be tolerated. Given the fact that the entire yacht could be seized if someone onboard is found in possession of drugs, I think that Paul Allen might be concerned with that.

Is Paul Allen buying the Zein as a shadow boat

Filed under: Yachts & Sailing, Celebrity Shopping

A little while back we wrote about Shadow Boats, boats that cart around the helicopters, speedboats, cars and other toys a megayacht owner needs so the main yacht doesn't get to cluttered. Now the Sunday Times reports that Paul Allen is running out of space on the Octopus. He is looking at the Zein, a the yacht which was where Prince Rainier and Princess Grace spent their honeymoon. It would be a sad end for such a lovely old yacht but the 535,000 euro purchase price makes the Zein a deal.
