Dior Pulls Out Of Palm Beach

It's hard not to wonder if closing of the Christian Dior boutique on Palm Beach, Florida's elite Worth Avenue has something to do with the fallout from the Bernard Madoff scheme. Some of his wealthy Palm Beach neighbors were among his victims. Whatever the reason, the Dior store quickly pulled up stakes right after Christmas. The Palm Beach Daily News says that the windows are covered in black paper and just the shadow of the former Dior signage remains. There's no dearth of elite boutiques on Worth Avenue but the defection of Dior may send ripples of dismay around the luxury shopping destination.

This Palm Beach, Florida home is called 'the Ballinger house' after its most recent owner but the 1926 home was originally christened La Torre Bianca. It was built by society architect Howard Major in the popular South Florida Mediterranean style. The five-bedroom main house includes a third-floor tower room with water views. The property includes a two-bedroom guesthouse, a three-car garage and estate grounds with a heated pool, fountains, a pond and gardens. It is listed at $11.9 million.

The Breakers Opens A Real Estate Office

One of the most iconic Florida hotels, The Breakers in Palm Beach, is finding its own ways of dealing with the economic slump. Usually this time of year is boom time for the hotel but they have trimmed the staff by about 10% or 200 or so people. The resort has also taken the unique move of creating three new businesses, the Phillips Point Club on the top floor of the Phillips Point office building in West Palm Beach, Mix, a women's accessories store at The Breakers and The Breakers Palm Beach Realty, a brokerage catering to the luxury real estate market. Real estate in this tough economy? Spokeswoman Ann Margo Peart tells the Palm Beach Post that the business, which is located on the hotel grounds, will cater to guests who have made inquiries about high-end real estate in Palm Beach.

Casa Nana, Estate of the Day

I mentioned this estate earlier this year when the Wall Street Journal reported that Florida car dealer, Terry Taylor has listed his Palm Beach, Florida home for $72.5 million which is almost three times what he paid in 2003. Over the last year so so Palm Beach real estate has remained strong (the Kimmel estate sold for $81.5 million in April and Trump had his $100 million sale in Palm Beach in May) while the rest of Florida has plummeted but this one hasn't been snapped up yet. It certainly is a Palm Beach prize, the main house was built circa 1924 and designed by veteran Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner. It has nine bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, a movie theater with a ticket window and concession stand, an exercise room, a wine cellar, pool, large pool house and two three-car garages, each with a second-floor guest apartment. The deliciousness here is in the details, in the moldings and finishes and classic lines that could give you neck strain from craning your head around to take it all in.

The Taylors have made updates, renovating the kitchen and restoring most of the leaded-glass windows as well as repainting the home but much of what makes this home beautiful is that it has stayed as true to the way it was built as possible. This home is in move-in condition and has 268 feet of ocean frontage. It may remain on the market a little while longer but I would guess it will sell for fairly close to the exorbitant $72.5 million asking price. After all, there are only so many Palm Beach Mizners to go around.

Steinway by Lilly Pulitzer: A Very Preppy Piano

Only two more months until this Lilly Pulitzer'ed Steinway can find its home in your parlor. Nothing can better express the fact you travel the Nantucket-Palm Beach axis with the greatest of ease. The venerable design house rolled out this Steinway, among other 50th anniversary treats like a Lillified Jeep Wrangler, at a special preview at The Breakers hotel in Palm Beach back in June. In November, the pieces will finally hit market.

Qui-Si-Sana, Estate of the Day

Today's home is a Palm Beach, Florida classic. The five-bedroom oceanfront residence was built in 1921 and designed by architect Marion Sims Wyeth for entrepreneur Earle Perry Charlton, one of the founders of the F.W. Woolworth Company. Its name Qui-Si-Sana ("Here One Heals") comes from a hotel on the island of Capri, and the home has a Mediterranean appeal, making ample use of the outdoor space with large oceanside lawns and an open courtyard plan surrounding a private garden terrace by the formal pool. The interior includes four stately fireplaces, pecky cypress paneling, Cuban tile floors, and filigreed ironwork gates. Large hedges help preserve privacy on this corner oceanfront lot in one of Palm Beach's finest neighborhoods. While most of Florida has been faltering real estate-wise, Palm Beach has continued to rise, scoring $81.5 million for Sidney Kimmel's mansion and $100 million for Donald Trump's oceanfront flip. This home is listed at $20 million.

Palm Beach Classic, Estate of the Day

I could prattle on about why this house is an important one in Palm Beach, Florida. I could tell you about Swiss architect Maurice Fatio and how he was one of the major players contributing to the florescence of the town in the 1920s. But really, you're just here for the pretty pictures. And we've got them today. The six-bedroom home has a red-tile roof, crystal chandeliers and graceful arched doorways. It is full of riotous color and still manages to be beautifully classic. My favorite room is the library with painted coffered ceiling. It is listed at $21 million. After the jump, one peach of a house.

Villa Esterel, Estate of the Day

Villa Esterel in Palm Beach, Florida looks like it has been in place for at least fifty years but it was built in 1993 by Smith Architectural Group. The home sits on an acre of land, ideally located facing the ocean. The home has a classic Mediterranean exterior but a modern Florida marble-heavy interior. Details of the five-bedroom home include a media room, sundeck, fitness room, cabana and a three-car garage. The home is available furnished for $18.5 million but it looks like you might want to add a few more furnishings yourself. After the jump, maybe waterfront explains that small pool.

Nutting Estate, Estate of the Day

The phrase "they don't make them like that anymore" is often overused but it certainly applies here. Florida and Palm Beach in particular is full of houses with a Spanish feel but not many like this 1926 beauty. Designed for the E.Z. Nutting family by Julius Jacobs this home was restored by Bill Elias who has worked on a variety of Palm Beach's elegant older homes. This home has four levels of living spaces. Modern details like impact glass windows, an updated kitchen, a redesigned master suite with his and hers baths, a pool and a tennis court make it suitable for today's big spender. The home's original features such as the stone carvings and dark wood beamed ceilings as well as an admirable oceanfront location made it a showpiece from the very beginning. It is listed at $24 million. After the jump, a little old-fashioned glamour.

Palm Beach Plantation House, Estate of the Day

What this Palm Beach, Florida house does have is a great location, what it doesn't have is a lot of land. But if you are interested in a beautiful ocean views without the hassle of a lot of acres to upkeep this house is ideal. It's on a small lot but the house itself is relatively modest at  6700 square feet.  The two-story plantation house has a charming style with wraparound verandas and has an elevator, four bedrooms and two staff bedrooms. Access to the nearby beach is via your own private underground tunnel. There is a small pool and a new patio. In this case, location trumps reason, the house was built in the 1970s and in places it looks a bit worn. It is listed at $15.9 million (or $14.9 million according to realtor.com). Filed under: Estates

The Palm Beach Daily News has a story on 550Q a new development in Palm Beach that is aimed at art lovers. The 10-story condo building will come with amenities like a two-year membership at the Norton Museum; two common rooms where residents can show their collections and a building designed with artistic tastes in mind. The project is expected to lure art lovers from colder climates who want to come to West Palm Beach and be integrated into the community and share their love of the arts with other like-minded folks. Even the sales office is covered with a mural conceived by Jorge Pardo. The building also has more traditional Palm Beach features like a rooftop pool, landscaped courtyard and fitness center. 550Q is expected to be built by early 2008. Tiger Woods Nets A $40 Million Home

The Palm Beach Post has a look at Tiger's new lair. Tiger Woods has paid around $40 million for a 10-acre compound on Jupiter Island in Florida. Although the price is a record breaker for the area the most interesting thing is that Tiger may tear down the main house. The property extends from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean and includes four houses, the main house, plus two guest houses and a beach house. There are two boat docks one of which may be the new home for Woods' 155-foot-yacht, Privacy. The Post also says that while Woods is welcome on the local golf course he might not be invited to join the Jupiter Island Club because of his fame and that the same goes forCeline Dion who also bought in the exclusive community recently. The area is home to several other golfers including Greg Norman and Nick Price.
