Rothko Painting Sets Record in New York

A painting by artist Mark Rothko broke the record for postwar art by more than a little at an auction at Sotheby's in New York when it sold for $72.8 million dollars on Tuesday. Although "White Center (Yellow, Pink, and Lavender on Rose)," was expected to go for high dollars (presale estimates had put it around $40 million), the over-the-top boost can most likely be attributed to the big name of owner and seller David Rockefeller Sr. -- who says he plans to donate the proceeds of the sale to charity.

It was a big night for record breaking sales, as earlier that night Francis Bacon's "Study From Innocent X" broke all previous records selling for $52.7 million, only to be outdone by the Rockefeller's Rothko moments later.

Paint by Numbers, from Weego Home

What if next time somebody visits your home, and inquires about a beautiful new hand painted piece of artwork, you can smile and say "I did that," and then enjoy the surprised faces of your guests. I know what you're thinking: Yeah right. But even those with severe artistic challenges have that option now with "paint-it-yourself" kits from Weego Home. The Paint by Number sets include everything you need to complete a 32" or 40" canvas painting, including a wooden stretcher frame, pre-drawn primed canvas, acrylic paints, brushes, and full instructions. And honestly I don't think the end results look too shabby at all.

So let your inner artist break free! Within the pre-drawn lines, of course.

Pollock Sells for $140M

Although neither the seller nor the buyer, both private and tight-lipped, want to comment on the sale, the $140 million price tag that was attached to a Jackson Pollock paining last week makes it the most expensive piece of artwork in history. The painting, which was done on fiberboard, is titled "No. 5, 1948" and measures 4-feet 8-inches in height. David Geffen reportedly it sold to the "obsessively private" Mexican financier David Martinez through Sotheby's. The NY Times speculates that, as Geffen just sold off two other very expensive paintings in the last few weeks, he may be trying to raise money for a bid to purchase the LA Times.

[Thanks, Lana]

What Not To Do With A $140M Painting

There is a reason why so much artwork - particularly older, valuable pieces - is displayed behind glass cases or out of the public's reach: the art is easily damaged and galleries and museums don't want to take unnecessary chances with their investments. When you are a private collector, those safeguards aren't always maintained. This isn't a problem when personal collections are small, but it is when you own a $140 million dollar painting, such as Picasso's La Reve, owned by Steve Wynn. Wynn, after selling the painting for just under that price, accidentally punched a hole in the canvas with a careless elbow.

Apparently, the painting can be restored and Wynn is taking this as a sign that the painting should not be sold, but when you're dealing with something so valuable in the first place, even private collectors might consider an extra precaution or two.

[Thanks, Mike!]

Loyal Companion Silkscreen

This silkscreened print, Loyal Companion, features the elegant profile of a greyhound on hand-woven paper and framed in silver-foiled wood. The blue and pink colors used in the print can be swapped, should you prefer a pink dog to a blue one, but in either case, the contrast makes the relatively simple piece very eye-catching. It has a pop-art feel that would look good in most contemporary settings and, of course, it would be great for a dog-lover. Price: $498.

When it comes to artists, no one is cooler than Andy Warhol. That having been said, no one is quite as expensive to buy, either. But don't let the price tags of those auction houses discourage you. Now, everyone can afford to have their own Warhol-inspired piece of original art. All you have to do is send a photograph to the people at Nic Norman, and they will turn your snapshot into an Andy Warhol-style piece of Pop Art to don the walls of your home or office.

The artists at Nic Norman work one-on-one with customers to create unique prints. Each custom pop art design is printed on real canvas with museum-quality pigment-based archival inks. The prints are professionally stretched and gallery mounted with the highest quality white pine wooden frames.

Klimt Painting Sets Record

Eclipsing the record set in 2004 by a Pablo Picasso painting, Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I has sold for $135 million, the highest price ever paid for a painting. It was purchased by billionaire Ronald S. Lauder, the heir to the Estee Lauder fortune, and it will be displayed in his small, New York museum, the Neue Galerie. The painting was taken from the Bloch-Bauer's home in 1938 by Nazis and was sold by her niece, Maria Altmann, who has only had it since the beginning of this year, after looted artwork was returned to relatives of the original owners.

Kazaan Viveiros paintings

Many in the San Francisco art community were saddened to hear that Steel Gallery -- owned and operated by novelist Danielle Steel -- is closing its doors this month.

Take heart, art buffs: despite the bad news, one of Steel Gallery's favorite painters, Kazaan Viveiros, is still alive and kicking.

A favorite of ARTnews and the SF Weekly, Viveiros's eerie works are equal parts hyper-realist images and abstract color planes. In other words, they're both traditional and edgy. And while I'm not sure if Condoleeza Rice is a Kazaan Viveiros fan, the Portugese-American's paintings do grace the walls of the State Department.

Though painting prices are not disclosed on Viveiros's website, I'm sure Steel Gallery can quote you a price. Better hurry up and give them a call, though.

Like Art For Chocolate, Mother's Day Gift of the Day

Like Art for Chocolate combines a visual art with a culinary art, presenting 16 pieces of high end chocolate truffles in a custom-crafted wood box.  Each of the aspen boxes features an original oil painting on the lid, capturing a scene of natural beauty, done by artist M. Alexis Pichardo. The truffles are made by Albert Lauber, owner of Neuchatel Chocolates. Like Art for Chocolate is limited to 100 pieces, all of which were released specifically for Mother's Day, so they won't be available for long, though the painting is a piece of the gift that will certainly last. The Revolution Will Be Live

Being a revolutionary ain't easy. First, there's all of that boring theory you have to learn. Then, there's all that stuff about "collectivity" and "the worker" that you also have to believe, at least somewhat whole-heartedly.

Ss if things couldn't get worse, you will also probably have to start dressing like a revolution. If you ask me, as a group, revolutionaries are quite possible the most  poorly dressed political element. The exception, of course, is Che Guevara's beret, which is a definite 'do'. But aside from Che's headwear, revolutionaries are a pretty badly-heeled lot.

But now, thanks to Chinese painter, Zhu Yao-Hui, you too can become a revolutionary! (And the best part is that you don't even have to leave your couch!)

All you have to do is select the size and the format of the painting that you would like out of the 16 vintage options offered. Then send the artist a couple of photographs of yourself in a position that vaguely emulates the figure in the original poster. After about two weeks, you will receive your new portrait in the mail.

Starting at $149, these hand-painting revolutionary posters are the easiest way to roll with the big comrades, without actually having to do or believe anything.

Viva la revolution, baby!

Turner Painting Sets New Records

Wow, the auction of that J.M.W. Turner painting at Christie's this week turned out to be even more exciting than imagined. The painting, "Giudecca, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio" sold for $38.5 million to a private collector bidding over the phone. It set a new record for an Old Master painting in the U.S. and is the most expensive British painting ever sold. The painting was sold by the St. Francis of Assisi Foundation and as we mentioned before, is tax exempt.

Christina Aguilera Buys A Banksy

The pop artist Christina Aguilera has just dropped £25,000 - that's about $43,500 - on a painting by the British graffiti artist Banksy.  The painting shows the late Queen Victoria, who passed anti-homosexual laws and "famously believed women were incapable of being gay", depicted as a lesbian. Victoria, clad in stockings and garter belt, is painted in a compromising position with another woman. Aguilera plans to display the controversial painting in her home.

The painting is after the jump and is possibly not safe for work.

Important Turner Painting To Be Auctioned By Christies

The painting to watch at the upcoming Important Old Masters Paintings auctions to be held at Christie's New York on April 6 is this painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner. The painting Guidecca, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio was one of three Venetian paintings exhibited by Turner at the Royal Academy of Arts Exhibition of 1841. Turner traveled to Venice several times and painted many watercolors during his travels but only created a few oil paintings based on the same scenes. This painting captures Venice as a beautiful city already in decay. The painting's provenance dates back to its original sale for 250 guineas to Elhanan Bicknell. The painting was donated in 1992 to the St. Francis of Assisi foundation which is now selling the painting (making this a tax-exempt purchase for the lucky bidder). Turner is considered one of the finest British painters and his work paved the way for the Impressionists. The painting could sell for around $20 million.

Gauguin Painting Sells for $19.2 Million

Paul Gauguin's lovely "Deux Femmes''  sold for 11 million pounds ($19.2 million) at Sotheby's London. The painting was the most expensive lot in the Impressionist sale. The Gauguin went to a telephone bidder. The auction also included eight paintings from Edvard Munch which sold for a total of 16.9 million pounds, including commission. Joan Miro's gold-and-blue picture of a bird under a sickle-shaped moon was the number two lot at  4.6 million pounds. The prices seems to indicate that the Impressionist market is continuing to thrive. Bloomberg notes that European impressionists including Gauguin gained 17 percent last year, while contemporary art rose 13.8 percent.

Art and Yoga Workshop in France

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Here's a trip idea for the truly creative. I've seen plenty of yoga retreats and plenty of painting workshops but it's rare to see the two combined. This spring artist Charles Wildbank and yogini Mary McGuire are leading a yoga/painting workshop in the Normandy countryside. The trip include a guided tour of museums in Paris and a stay in a private home in Giverny, the inspiration of so many of Monet's masterpieces. The yoga practice is appropriate for anyone from beginners to more experienced practitioners. Those on the tour will have access to Monet's gardens and traditional French meals with wine will be served. The tour lasts from April 25 to May 5 and costs $2400 per person if booked by January 31.
