Oxfam's Chic Boutique

Just this past weekend a boutique opened in an upscale fashion neighborhood in London with an unlikely name: Oxfam. Most commonly recognized for slightly battered or worn vintage and retro secondhand clothing pieces, Oxfam is revamping their image and looking to become a more fashion-conscious name. They've hired Jane Shepherdson (formly of Topshop) and recruited students from the London College of Fashion along with several British designers to overhaul donated clothes into trendier more upscale items. This new boutique is just one of three planned total, with the other two scheduled to open later this summer.

Oxfam America, Charity of the Day

Filed under: Charity of the Day

Happy December. Today marks the first in a daily series that will last the month of December, and possibly beyond, highlighting great causes to give funds to. The first part of this month will focus in holiday-themed programs that some charities run. Up first, Oxfam Unwrapped. Oxfam works in 26 countries around the world and sells gift items that symbolically represent their work. The purchase of a gift is not a donation toward a specific program but it help the recipient connect with the projects that Oxfam does around the world. Their biggest ticket donation item is the $10,000 stilt house. Oxfam America builds these homes in flood-prone areas to offer families a place where they can live and adapt to climate change without having to relocate. You don't need to be a big donor to make a big impact. Gifts start at just $18 which can buy a blanket, children's toys and school supplies.

The No Dirty Gold Campaign

We've spent plenty of time talking about conflict gems but what about what they are set in? The No Dirty Gold campaign seeks to educate consumers on what gold mining entails and to compel mining corporations to make sure that gold is produced in more socially and environmentally responsible ways. Now eight retailers Zale Corp., the Signet Group (the parent firm of Sterling and Kay Jewelers), Tiffany & Co., Helzberg Diamonds, Fortunoff, Cartier, Piaget, and Van Cleef & Arpels put an ad in yesterday's  New York Times saying that they will work with Oxfam America and EarthWorks to end "dirty gold."  The average gold ring, which weighs in at 1/3 of an ounce generates 20 tons of waste and gold mining contributes to air, water and soil pollution and human rights violations.
