Rubber Tubs From Recycled Tires

These rubber tubs from The Conran Shop might not be the prettiest things we've ever seen but they could be the workhorse of your summer. The tubs, made from recycled car and truck tires and based on early Middle Eastern leather designs are incredibly tough and long lasting. Use them to hold beach towels, pack them full of ice and use them as a drinks cooler, use them to tote your barbecue supplies to the cookout or any other of dozens of storage options. The tubs sell for $74 to $135 depending on size.

Jeanne Scandura Float Wave Chaise

Jeanne Scandura, landscape architect and founder of Float Furniture, intended her designs to evoke a sensual modernism. Using materials inspired by surf culture, she gives hard surfaces movement by sculpting them into graceful curves. The wave chaise is cast from fiberglass-reinforced resin and is suitable for use inside or out.
The chaise is available in several wood veneer finishes for indoor use or with a marine-grade coating in a rainbow of colors for outdoors. Prices start at $3,800.

Loll Designs makes outdoor furnishings that have the look of wood Adirondack chairs and other classic designs but are actually HDPE outdoor resin. The furniture is made of recycled plastic and stainless steel hardware. They also have tables and storage options that are "designed to last longer than you." This park bench sells for $1449 and the company is currently offering free shipping on orders over $500.

Talt Chair and Table Set

If you are looking to have a bistro in your backyard, the Talt Collection from Modern Outdoor is the place to start. It has the look of a set you would see at a outdoor cafe. No rickety table and chair set here, the table and chairs are made of powder-coated stainless steel with your choice of upholstery colors and finishes. The chic look will cost you, the set costs over $5500 depending on options but at least drinks are cheaper at home.

Steel Palm Tree

From the same folks who brought you the steel cacti, here comes the steel palm. The palm comes with a brown tree trunk of solid steel but other color options are available. It can also have misting and lighting systems included. The smallest size is 17 feet tall and costs $7150. I really like the look of the cacti but I don't think the palm tree works as well, it reminds me instead of the cell phone towers disguised as palm trees.

Aquarium Chaise

The Aquarium Chaise is part of a new collection from designer Ilan Dei. Dei was inspired to try an utilize natural lighting in the design of his collection, which includes a coffee table and matching chair in addition to the chaise, and did so by constructing the chair with transparent, tinted acrylic panels. The panels are supported by a frame of weather-resistant (marine grade) plywood, which is finished in a natural color. Dei mentions that the chair could be used indoors, as well as out, but it is fairly obvious that it was meant to be beside a sparking pool. Price: $780.

Shadescapes Umbrellas

This innovative umbrella is from Shadescapes which makes a whole line of sidepost umbrellas. The design allows the umbrella to fold vertically and you don't have to deal with a big post in the middle of your shade. It also can be tilted in a variety of ways to create just the right angle of shade. The 360-degree rotation means that the umbrella can easily follow the sun. It has an acrylic canopy and an aluminum mast. Prices start at $1,795.

Shady Lace Parasol

If your backyard is a bit low on foliage, this parasol from Conran can fill in with delicate shade you never have to prune. The parasol is cut in a pattern of foliage. The sunlight through the parasol casts shadows of branches and trees.   A gold colored bird sits on top.  The parasol plus stand sells for $840.

Aloico Lava Stone Tables

This table seems to call out for a shady spot in a verdant garden to make its own. The table is from Aloico, a company which imports ceramics from Sicily. They offer a wide variety of colorful pieces including Limoncello sets which come with a decanter, tray and six glasses for enjoying the deliciously sunny liqueur. The table shown here is the 26-inch Grapes of Eden lava stone table top which weighs 100 pounds and sells for $2,750.

Serpentine Outdoor Shower

There's nothing like an outdoor shower in the summertime. Whether you need a rinse from the beach or just need to cool off  from the beach, an outdoor shower is one of summer's pleasures. The Serpentine garden shower designed by Tom De Vrieze for Extremis is an outdoor shower without involving major plumbing. Place it wherever you want and hook it up to your garden hose and it's ready to go. No guarantees on the hot water though. Their product blurb says that because the hose is exposed to the sun, the water inside the hose will heat up. it is available in May and should sell for around $430.

Montecito Chaise

Most furniture companies are now releasing their lines of outdoor furniture for spring/summer, and this chaise lounge from Room & Board is one of the more original pieces I've seen. Wicker makes the chaise (called the Montecito) classic-looking, while the teak wheels and aluminum base lend a modern feel. According to the company's web site, there's also a storage compartment beneath the backrest. Price: $1,599.

The Leaf Chaise

We are a few months from summer but if you are dreaming of the perfect chaise to sunbathe on, this could be it. The Leaf from Dedon is a beautiful woven chaise in the shape of a giant leaf.  It is made of Hularo, a man-made weatherproof fiber woven over an aluminum frame. There are three pieces in the collection, a regular chaise, a double-sized chaise, and a delicately curved side table.
