The Bookish Life at the Osborne, Estate of the Day

If I could live in any building in New York City it might just be the Osborne. We've seen a couple of different gorgeous apartments in this building and here is another one. The Osborne is a rusticated Romanesque Revival and Italian Renaissance Palazzo-style building built in 1883. It has a historic Byzantine lobby with contributions by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, muralist John LaFarge, and Tiffany Studios. The listing states that the original plans for the building included "a porte-cochére, a billiard room, a florist, a resident doctor and druggist and on the roof, a lawn for playing croquet."

This apartment is a two-bedroom co-op that includes a double living room with the original wood and plaster and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lining the walls, The room is anchored by two wood burning fireplaces at either end of the room and the front wall has tall dramatic windows allowing sun to pour in through regular glass and upper stained glass panes, recreated and Landmark approved. From the living room, an oversized pocket door leads to the library, with another wood burning fireplace. The Poggenpohl chef's kitchen has a Wolfe stove, SubZero fridge, large center island, granite countertops and washer and dryer. The master bedroom includes a walk-in closet leading to a full bath and another bedroom mirrors the master bedroom with a walk in closet and full bath. This apartment is listed at $6.9 million.

Another Historic Apartment Up For Sale At The Osborne

A couple of weeks ago we looked at Charles Osgood's apartment at the historic Osborne building in New York City, now there is another beautiful apartment up for sale in the same building. The Real Deal reports that composer Leonard Bernstein and singer Bobby Short were both once residents in Apartment 4B at the Osborne. The eight-room apartment is up for sale for the first time in two decades. The four-bedroom apartment has Victorian touches including call buttons to summon servants and a secret passageway that leads from the front hall to the kitchen. The tiger oak floors and the stained glass in the parlor windows shown above are also original. This apartment has 14-foot ceilings and five fireplaces with magnificent mantles. It is listed at $3.495 million.

It's always been my dream to live in a home that has room enough for all the books I could ever want. Newsman Charles Osgood is living that dream in New York City. The CBS News radio and television personality owns a fantastic apartment in the Osborne that the NY TImes calls a " cozy Victorian time machine." The Osgoods combined several smaller apartments into one amazing lair. The listing says this is the largest unit that's ever been for sale in the Osborne. The home has high ceilings and gorgeous wood details that include mahogany panels and oak parquet floors. Large windows incorporate the original Tiffany glass transom panels. An adorable wood spiral staircase leads up to a Juliette balcony giving you a view of all those books. The second and third floors form private wings perfect for guests, in-laws, domestic help or anyone else you want to separate by a door or two. The apartment is around 5,100 square feet with six bedrooms. It is listed for $7.9 million.
