The 1800s gold mining boom town of Jacksonville, Oregon is home to many beautiful homes including today's treasure, the Nunan estate. The home was built in 1892 by Jeremiah Nunan as a Christmas present for his wife. Nunan bought the house plan through a catalog and spent $7,800 to create the home. The home was one of the first homes in Jacksonville with running water and indoor plumbing. it has a total of eight bedrooms and is currently in use as a bed and breakfast with a full restaurant and catering business (the restaurant is in the carriage house). The home is full of beautiful details including carved woodwork and stained glass. The bedrooms are decorated in a Victorian style. The over-three-acre grounds include a swimming pool and patio that have been used to host many weddings. This property is listed at $2.5 million.

Jantzen Island, Estate of the Day

Here we are in Lake Oswego, and on Oswego Lake near Portland, Oregon, at a private Island estate, originally built and owned by Carl Jantzen, founder of Jantzen sportswear, most recently owned by Jerry Stubblefield, founder of the Avia shoe company

The Tudor style home was built in 1930 by Charles Ertz, and sits on a knoll on the north shore, connected to Lake Oswego by its own turreted stone and log bridge. Ertz, a renowned architect in the mid 20th century, designed the residence, with five bedrooms, six baths, three fireplaces. It was originally 9500 square feet, but with recent renovations it is now 13,500 square feet., on 5.5 acres of manicured grounds. The island also has an unusual boathouse, designed by Richard Sundeleaf in 1933, constructed of stones, sculptured turrets, wrought iron gates and exposed beam interiors. Inside, on an old stone bench, the owner can sit, look at the lake, and beyond see an unimpeded view of Mount Hood.

It is the only private island on Lake Oswego; and the only home on the island. The home is constructed of old growth timber and Columbia River Basalt stone, staying true to the area building materials.. Also, as an homage to the original owner, the home has original Jantzen warehouse windows. The gate has a secured private bridge, is close to one mile of walking trails, a helicopter pad, a lakeside pool, multiple terraces and view points, waterfalls, a rose garden, a formal English garden & separate living quarters with full kitchen and living area. The estate has exceptional privacy, and is considered a one-of-a-kind residence within one of the highest end areas of the Pacific Northwest. Offered at $15,000,000, Harnish Properties, Lake Oswego, Oregon.

Kevin Pritchard's Lake Oswego Home, Estate of the Day

An article on Oregon Live recently about new Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews mentioned that former general manager Kevin Pritchard's home in Lake Oswego, Oregon is for sale. I can never resist a good sports star home so I had to check it out. Pritchard owns a lovely Mediterranean style home right on the banks of Lake Oswego.

Pritchard, shown at right with Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen in 2007, spent some time playing basketball in Italy and was enchanted by Lake Como. He rebuilt this home with the idea of creating an Italian-style retreat. The home took several years to complete. The property has a courtyard with a waterfall. Inside, large windows and terraces make the most of the lake views. The home, named Tre Cascate, has a stucco and brick exterior meant to mimic the look of an antique Italian home. Three levels of hardscape patios perch over the tranquil lake. The home has five bedrooms total and there is a small cottage on the property. It is listed at $3.6 million.

Six Top Luxury Ranches For Sale

Is this the time to indulge your hankering' and buy yourself a not-so-modest spread in Wyoming, Montana, or Colorado? After all, just three months ago, Texas billionaire Kelcy Warren picked up the Boot Jack Ranch in southwest Colorado for a mere $46.5 million; the ranch was originally listed two years before at $88 million. At the time, it was the highest price residential sale in the country for 2010 -- a short-lived record surpassed by a Bel-Air home a few weeks later.

But if a guy like Warren can get half off the price of a ranch with of 3,000 pristine wilderness acres, 6 lakes and 7 miles of world-class fly fishing on the West Fork of the San Juan River -- not to mention the 14,000-square-foot home -- might now not be the time for the rest of us to get in touch with our inner cowboy?

Lest you think Warren got the only real deal out there: A Bozeman-area ranch, once listed at $39 million, just closed escrow at $11.5 million. Another ranch in southwest Montana, which at its peak listed for $60 million, just sold for below $30 million. In southern Colorado, a ranch that once sported a price tag of $100 million, has a new owner who paid about $46 million for it.

But before you jump in the saddle, you might want to hold your horses, literally. There's more than meets the eye about what constitutes value in ranch land and it's not just acreage alone.

(First, let's eliminate those ranches that Luxist readers likely wouldn't consider: The ones that are in the middle of nowhere, have no pretty views, and their value is based on things like the dependability of the precipitation, the strength of the grass and the quality of livestock water. i think we can safely eliminate most of Western Nebraska and Eastern Montana, maybe even Eastern Colorado.)

What features drive up the price of a luxury ranch? Oddly enough, it's privacy.
