Greek Heroes at the Onassis Cultural Center

Hero worship in the ancient world was nothing like our own. Whereas we are quick to denounce athletes, politicians, and celebs with very human flaws, the Greeks had a different take. Theirs was a broader view that didn't require total moral excellence. Their concept of heroes and heroines was complicated, changeable, and perhaps more forgiving than our own.

What makes someone a hero or heroine? That's the context for this new exhibition of 90 exceptional artworks focusing on Archaic, Classical, and the Hellenic periods (6th-first century BC) at the Onassis Cultural Center in midtown Manhattan. "Heroes: Mortals and Myths in Ancient Greece" explores the Greek interpretation of heroism with decorated pottery, marble reliefs, bronze statues, and carved gemstones. As this intriguing show emphasizes, virtue was not necessarily a qualification to be considered a Greek hero or heroine. To us, the gods and heroes in the Greek myths were invented by poets and storytellers, but to the Greeks they were real people who lived, died, and in many cases transcended death as immortals.

Last week Athina Onassis auctioned off a large collection of her mother's jewelry through Christie's in London, with the most noteworthy piece being a diamond necklace featuring a 38-carat pear-shaped diamond pendant.

Athina's mother was Christina Onassis, daughter of famous Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis, and she died at the young age of only 37 back in 1987. The diamond necklace was a fitting example of the great jewelry and art the Onassis family was known for collecting. It sold for $7.1 million.

Is the Christina O Yacht For Sale?

Is the Christina O, one of the world's most famous yachts, for sale? An Irish newspaper reports that the current owner, Pino Harris has put the yacht up for sale for €60 million. The 324-foot yacht, which was our top choice for a summer charter, costs upwards of $455,000 per week to hire. Last summer, P. Diddy rented the yacht and was photographed on it for OK Magazine. Harris and Ivor Fitzpatrick paid €3 million for the yacht in 2000 and spent €50 million fixing her up. We haven't been able to get any confirmation of this anywhere else but it will be interesting to see if anyone snaps this beauty up at the exorbitant asking price.

Koch Sells 1040 Fifth Avenue

David H. Koch, number 33 on Forbes Magazine's list of the world's billionaires, is selling up to accommodate his growing family and putting his 1040 Fifth Avenue apartment on the market. The apartment occupies the entire 15th floor of the building and was once owned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Koch purchased it in 1995 for $9.5-million and spent and estimated $5-10 million on renovations. He and his wife felt they needed a larger space to raise what will be their third child, though the apartment at 1040 Fifth has four bedrooms, two dressing rooms, a staff room, a library, living room, dining room, conservatory, two terraces, three fireplaces, five and a half bathrooms and a wine room. The family is moving to 740 Park, which Koch says is a duplex twice the size of the Onassis apartment. The asking price is $32 million.
