Solitaire Olive Dish

This is a fun idea for a cocktail party. The Solitaire olive dish designed by Barnaby Barford and Andre Klauser for Thorsten Van Elten lets you play a little game while eating your hors d'ouevres, gradually working your way to clean plate victory. The dish holds 100 pieces and there are four wells that can be used for olive pits or other discards. This dish could probably work with any other small spheroid edible. It measures 7.9" x 7.9" x 1.2"h in glazed earthenware and sells for $55.

to22 Says No Martini Without an Olive!

Don't take olives in your martini? Well then this is definitely not the glass for you, because this martini glass by to22 can't do without at least one olive. When designing this glass the thought was that "the olive has become the signature element of a martini, and yet it is treated almost as an afterthought."
Now when to22 went to give the olive greater importance they weren't messing around! The olive is so important to a drink in this glass that you can't have one without it, literally. The olive is used to plug a hole in the bottom of the glass.

Great idea and I love it! But I will say this: this is not a glass I'll hold over my lap or walk around with...you know, just in case.

Adopt An Olive Tree

Here's a great chance to both do something great for the environment and get something fun to show for it: adopt yourself an olive tree! Nudo, an olive grove in Italy, is offering people the chance to support small scale artisanal farming (instead of the large mechanized operations that damage the earth) by adopting a specific olive tree. And when you adopt an olive tree in the grove for one year not only do you get the satisfaction from the environmental effort, but you also get all the produce from your tree. You'll get a Spring Package with the olive oil from your tree, and then an Autumn Package of more olive oil and some handmade olive oil soap. $130/year.

Perhaps you've given up on the California winery dream, too labor intensive, too confusing and the market is crowded with small winemakers. How about the olive company dream? Today's estate in Goleta, California offers you the chance to become the owner of a 101 acre ranch that is home to over 5,000 mature olive trees. It is the location of the Santa Barbara Olive Company, which is now moving their headquarters to Santa Maria. The scenic ranch full of rolling hills has an 8,800 square foot main residence with a pool, spa, game room, music room and four bedrooms. The land also includes warehouses, a guest home and a four-car garage. There are also three acres of Chardonnay vineyard if you aren't quite ready to let that winery fantasy go yet. The home itself is in need of serious decor help but you can't beat the views to the Pacific Ocean. It is listed at $13.5 million. After the jump, palm trees and rattan as a design scheme.

Fresno State Olive Oil

Napa Community College isn't the only California college working on commercial products. Fresno State not only operates a commercial winery, now they are offering student-produced Estate Reserve Olive Oil. The oils is part of the university's “olives-for-oil” project and is priced at $10.95 for a 500 ml vintage bottle. The Estate Reserve is a blend of Arbequina, Arbosana and Koroneiki oils and proceeds from olive oil sales will benefit Fresno State's teaching and research program in agriculture. The olives were grown in super high-density plantings and then harvested and processed by the California Olive Ranch.
