Herman Miller Setu Review: The Easy Ergonomic Chair

What are you doing right now? Are you sitting down? What do you think about the chair you are in? Is it stylish, supportive? Have you ever really thought about it before? I didn't until a couple of years ago when I realized I was doing myself a disservice by sitting in the chair equivalent of a backache. "Ergonomic stuff is for the weak and elderly," being the type of perception I used to have. I eventually realized that sitting in a "nice" chair helped comfort and productivity a lot, but it wasn't easy finding the right seat. Most "ergonomic" items these days are gimmicks, and finding something specially designed for your comfort and health is hard. Well here is one item you don't have to stress-out about.

Here is my personal review of the new Herman Miller Setu task and desk chair. The brand well know for the universally popular Aeron desk chair has a few other products you should know about. One of them is right for you. In short, in the Herman Miller line of chairs, the Setu is made for simplicity and ease of use. No complex or frustrating levers and micro adjustments. The chair is designed to naturally fit to you, without having to adjust it. An added bonus is that multiple people can enjoy the same seat (no, not at the same time), without having to disturb your unique ergonomic settings.

$20,000 Office Style: The Bottega Veneta Leather Desk

I spend a lot of my day sitting at a desk so I'm always interested in seeing the latest in unique and interesting desk designs. This leather desk from Bottega Veneta is a little dark for my taste but it's also sleek and masculine, with a minimalist vibe. It's available in five different colors and features leather handles on both the drawers (there are three along the front) and on each side of the desk itself (makes it look a little like Transformer luggage to me), plus all the corners are accented with protective matte metal trim. Very chic. $19,700

50 Cent's Posh New Office Space

We've seen 50 Cent's home in Farmington's Connecticut and while it is lavish the decor didn't impress. I might have to revise my opinion of his taste after a look at his Manhattan workspace. King Magazine checks out the plush pad which has a recording studio, G-Unit emblazoned pool table, leather-tufted walls and a weight room. The only off note is the all stainless rather institutional looking bathroom.

The I-Con Desk

This I-Con desk takes the ideas of clean lines and minimalistic approach to the far ends of the spectrum. Designed by Michiel van der Kley, the top is made of white Corian, the drawers black-stained walnut veneer, and it stands on chromed steel legs. And if the you're like me and concerned about having enough storage (as it would probably lose all it's crisp modern appeal if you piled it high with papers) a free-standing drawer unit is also available separately.

The desk is comes in several sizes and starts at £3,850. The drawer unit: £1,995.

The Perfect Summer Desk Accessory: The Propello Desk/Table Fan

The hot days of summer are fast approaching, which means those days where the air in the office is stuffy and sticky and you can't seem to find relief no matter how high you crank the AC are on the way also. But maybe the Propello desk/table fan will help you stay productive on those miserable days? Available in two neutral colors, this light blue and a darker gray, the fan blades are made of soft natural rubber (so they can't hurt you) and it's all but completely silent with the finest "johnson electric" ball-bearing motor inside making things go 'round. Sells for $140.

Eames Mesh Managment Chair

Style and functionality come together easily in the Eames Managment Chair. Designed in 1958, when the word "ergonomic" was young and rarely used outside of research papers, its lightweight and body-hugging form was ahead of its time. The thin mesh backing is self-contouring and flexible, for "even weight distribution and long-term comfort." The mesh-backed chair is available in three colors, but the design is also available with other materials and in other colors at different price points. Price (for mesh): $1,188.

Hedi Slimane Designs Furniture

Photographer turned furniture designer Hedi Slimane's newest endeavor into the world of office furniture is a structured and geographical one. Using ebonized stainless steel, his creations include desks, chairs, and shelves that use a pattern of angles, squares, and thin lines to create a modern minimalist appearance. Although sleek and beautiful to look at, and sure to make a statement as part of a decorating scheme, I can't say they look comfortable at all to actually sit on or use. But then, that's obviously not the point.

Bear Bookends

Some people give teddy bears for Valentine's Day. But for the bibliophile these bears aren't just cute, they serve as laidback bookends. The two heavy cast metal bears recline on lounge chairs with books in their laps. A nice reminder that reading is one of the bear necessities. Okay, I deserve to be pinched for the bad bear pun but these are really adorable. They weigh nearly eight pounds each and the pair sells for $118.

Ergopod 500

The guys at Scifi Tech are right on the money when they said that the Ergopod is designed with the "lazy blogger" in mind. The Ergopod 500 is a sort of mobile cubicle that is designed to help you do your work without leaving your bed - or even without leaving a reclining position. A computer, multiple screens, keyboards and any other vital electronics can be easily - and securely - attached to the frame so they can all be used with minimal effort. The adjustable legs are motorized, as is the monitor tilt platform. It's probably great for your back, but not so great for muscle tone, since it even eliminates the "commute" to work for those who work from their homes. Price: $3,700.

Hela Glider Mouse

The new Glider Mouse from Hela is supposed to be a revolutionary development in the design of ergonomic mice. Unlike more traditional mice, the Glider is not a small gadget that rests to one side of your computer, but a fairly large pad that sits in front of the keyboard. It has wrist-resting surfaces on both sides, offering support during both mouse and keyboard work, and a central mouse pad with a "glider" and several programmable shortcut buttons besides the standard ones and a scroll wheel. Price: £149 ($288).

Wud Bookcase

Shelving units do not normally take center stage in any room. In offices, the focus is on the desk and even in libraries, the focus is on the books, not the bookcases. This compartmentalized bookcase, designed and manufactured by Wud, deserves to be at the center of attention. It looks a bit like a Tetris construction, although the way that it is sectioned makes it extremely useful for storing many things, in addition to books. The unit has a drop-down desk, two large filing cabinets and several closed cabinets. It can be made of cherry, maple or walnut and measures 94"l x 22" x 96". Price: $8,500.

Cherry Wood Filing Cabinets

Filing cabinets do not usually fall into the category of furniture that can be described as classy. Usually made of grey, beige or black metal, the cabinets are tucked away in some back room and are only accessed when a file or record is needed. It's not that the need to be hidden, just that they don't really match anything. Far classier than any standard metal filing cabinets are these Cherry Wood Filing Cabinets from Hammacher Schlemmer, handmade from hardwood harvested in the Adirondack Mountains. The stackable cabinets also have an anti-tip mechanism and can be attached directly to the walls for additional support, if necessary. Price: $1,629.

Step

In movies, the library shelves always seem to reach from floor-to-ceiling in 25-foot tall rooms and people need to use huge, rolling ladders to move around and locate the book they want. While most homes don't have a library system that is that daunting, floor-to-ceiling shelves are not uncommon and a small ladder or step is not a bad idea. Designed by by Konstantin Grcic, Step is a lightweight set of library steps, about 5-ft. high, that is safe and adds something of a distinguished look to even a simple library. There is a book rest at the top, so you can flip though volumes without climbing up and down. Price: £345 ($645).

Tod's Media D Bag, Handbag of the Day

Tod's Media D Bag is sleek and sophisticated - ideal for the office and other business affairs. The flat-sided black leather bag is large, measuring 15" x 11" x 5", so it can easily store many folders or books, in addition to all the everyday things you are likely to want at hand, including a wallet and cellphone. The suede interior has one zippered and two patch pockets. Rolled leather shoulder straps have an 8" drop, making the bag easy to fit under an arm, though they are thick enough to be comfortable when carried in-hand, as well. A small silver accessory adorns the end of one of the leather side ties, but the bag's metal feet are golden in color. Price: $1,150.

Helvetica Wall Panels

Helvetica is a mathematician's dream and an English major's nightmare. This pattern is a little less conventional, a little bolder than the Carnaby Panels from the same manufacturer, but these wall panels are fantastic. They could work in an office or a child's room, and would even make an interesting accent wall in a very contemporary home. Depending on the color (matte white, pictured), the 96"x46" panels are about $1000 each.
