Backpacks are the go-to, functional and easy to wear bags. It's a no brainer. They offer ample space with plenty of compartments and pockets for organization. Backpacks distribute the weight of what you're carrying over both shoulders as opposed to ending up with one painful shoulder or an elbow.

Jack Spade Drill Slim Turnpike Briefcase

Jack Spade bags are timeless. Their designs are classic with a slight twist (usually a pop of color) that immediately catches your eye. In the case of their Drill Slim Turnpike Briefcase ($395) , it's an unusual shape. One side has a curved edge while the other has a straight edge. It's this small but noticeable feature that makes me constantly stare at this bag. It almost makes the briefcase seem unbalanced but somehow it works. It's completely unexpected which makes me like the Drill Slim Turnpike Briefcase even more. I love when a designer can produce something unexpected that I end up loving.

The Drill Slim Briefcase is made from nylon and polyurethane making it waterproof, durable and resistant to those annoying scratches that I never seem to know where they've come from. It features a chocolate leather trim, a top zip closure and is quite roomy inside along with several interior and several exterior pockets for your smaller items. My husband fits his laptop, files, and magazines with room to spare. There is also a detachable shoulder strap if you'd rather not carry your briefcase.

Kate Spade Coney Island Quilted Lilia Tote, Handbag of the Day

The Kate Spade Coney Island Quilted Lilia Tote shows us quilting on a new -- much larger than usual -- scale.

This lovely13½"W X 13"H X 3"D tote has big, diamond-shaped nylon quilt panels, which give it an unusual texture and a lot of interest! The juxtaposition of the soft, cushy panels and the rigid goldtone rings and metal chain shows both femininity and grit. It's a sensible, day-sized bag with a punk rock edge.

We love the way this bag would dress up any denim -- and add rock cred to your day job outfit. The bag is rounded out with a sexy, deep red lining, an unusually dark metal Kate Spade logo plate and patent leather trim.

No word on whether it doubles as a pillow, but we have an inkling that it would totally work.

The ECO Only Bagg by Baggallini, Handbag of the Day

As I used my cloth bags in the store the other day, I thought about how the movement toward reusable bags and away from plastic sacks has created another thing to be manufactured from raw materials, even if the end result is positive. Then I came across Baggallini's ECO Only Bagg (TravelSmith, where I saw it, spells it "Only Bag").

Each Only Bagg's exterior is made from 26 recycled plastic bottles. Available in chestnut, earth red, ocean (see photo), sage, raven, sandstone and black; nylon interior; 12" drop handles; 10" x 15.5" x 7.5"; 7 inside zippered pockets, 2 bottle pockets, cell phone compartment, place for pens, pencils and lipstick; detachable cell phone case on the handle; and detachable ID/coin pouch. Weighs just 20 oz. and is water-resistant.

The bag's name comes from Baggallini's claim that it's "the only bag you will ever need." It's certainly better-looking than the free cloth bags I've picked up at expos, and would work as a travel bag or commuter bag as well as a large, but definitely casual, handbag. But, it's a bag you can feel good about using, even when you're carrying your water bottle in it. $74.95
