Bedat & Co. New Number 2 Watch

Bedat & Co. is back with a bang for 2010 - sharply aimed at its old rival Cartier. The new models are the 2 and the 8 - and here is the No. 2. Different than the old number 2, it takes the concepts of a circle surrounded by two different oblong circles - with an oblong circle in the middle. The shapes are in gold, and perhaps steel as well. Covered in diamonds - true to the heritage and theme of the luxury brand. Men's models don't make a come back in America - at least not yet. The passion here is for women. Cartier is pulling product out of traditional watch and jewelry stores in favor of their own brand boutiques and website. Bedat & Co, under its new Malaysian ownership is making a serious, and highly calculated move to take back the US. The No. 2 watches have Swiss quartz movements, but other models have Swiss automatic mechanical movements as well. Finish on the watches is impressive, and as always, a Bedat & Co. watch is all about the design. Look for this and more Bedat & Co. pieces to be in about 65 US stores now - and of course throughout the world. Click on the "READ MORE" link below for some more images.

Greubel Forsey Invention Piece No. 3 Watch

No doubt that Greubel Forsey watches are technically impressive. They are always able to shove just one more tourbillon into each new movement. At first, the look of their mechanical wonders was impressive and seemingly important - but now my fascination with the brand is beginning to dwindle. Why? Mainly because each new watch reminds me too much of the old watch. The "Invention" is lost. I've seen the inclined tourbllon bulging out of the side of the case, I've seen the familiar dials, I've seen the "Inventiveness" beaten to sheer "derivativeness."

That isn't to say the watches are not impressive, but Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey need to spruce it up a bit. How about hiring a good designer that can frame your complications really well? You guys obviously know what you are doing in the mechanical department, but your watches end up look incomplete. They look like prototypes to me.

Above you'll see their newest watch, the Invention Piece No. 3. The difference here is the use of a 24 hour dial. Meaning, instead of being a 12 hour dial, it shows all 24 hours. Nice, unless you live in America and are not in the military. You also get a small subsidiary seconds dial, and a power reserve indicator. The emphasis is on the tourbillon of course, which is inclined and spins once each 24 seconds. The movement is the manually wound GF 01n, and the 43mm wide gold watch is part of a limited edition of just 33 pieces. Nice, but just not exciting any longer for me.

Neutra House Numbers

True taste and design is all in the details. It's the small things that come together to create the big picture, and these Richard Neutra inspired house numbers could be the final touch you've been looking for to make your home's curb-appeal complete. Based on the letters Neutra specified for his buildings back in the 1930's to 1950's, the numbers weigh 1/2 pound each and are designed to "float" slightly off the surface and cast subtle shadows. Made of stainless steel they're resistant to corrosion, tarnishing and discoloration, and are always easily visible. Usually $75 each, but currently on sale for $67.50.

Erik Spiekermann Classic House Numbers

A few weeks ago, we took a look at some of the best-designed house numbers, one of the often-forgotten exterior details of the home, and found out that there are quite a few good ones available. At Design Within Reach, Erik Spiekermann has come up with a design for house numbers based on the Bodoni typeface that is classic, easy to read and elegant. The numbers are made of enamel-coated steel and come in red and green. All mounting hardware is included, but you'll have to put them up yourself. Price: $32 each.

The Best House Numbers

Now here is an area of design that I have not previously given much thought to, though we certainly spend a fair amount of time looking at outside decor here. Sunset has picked the nine best house numbers to help guide people (or, perhaps, the mailman) to your home. Their choices run from low-end to high and include the Optima Semi Bold in bronze ($57), Sausalito in zinc ($16), which might be better suited to an apartment door due to its relatively small size, and Neutraface Display Light Alt in stainless steel ($40). Is a house number worth sleepless nights trying to find the perfect font? Perhaps not, but matching your numbers to your style of house can bring together its look in an appealing way.

Helvetica Wall Panels

Helvetica is a mathematician's dream and an English major's nightmare. This pattern is a little less conventional, a little bolder than the Carnaby Panels from the same manufacturer, but these wall panels are fantastic. They could work in an office or a child's room, and would even make an interesting accent wall in a very contemporary home. Depending on the color (matte white, pictured), the 96"x46" panels are about $1000 each.
