Nick Faldo's New Caribbean Golf Course

The reinvention of British golfer Nick Faldo comes in many forms. Not only is the once tight-lipped major champion flashing a sense of humor these days as an analyst for CBS Sports and the Golf Channel (where you can hear him announce the Sony Open this weekend), he's also designing some spectacular golf courses. His latest is the Faldo Legacy Course at Roco Ki in the Dominican Republic.

The holes unfurl across a 2,500-acre site on the island's northeast coast, the terrain shifting from ocean highlands to mangrove forest to upland sawgrass plain. But the course's calling card is its clifftop closing holes. The par-three seventeenth has drawn comparisons to Pebble Beach, and the par-five eighteenth is called Dos Rezos (two prayers) because it demands two heroic shots over inlets of the sea. The course is the centerpiece of a real estate community that's to include luxury homes and villas plus the Westin Roco Ki Beach and Golf Resort, scheduled open later this year.

Given the beating he took in the British press for his unsuccessful captaincy of the European Ryder Cup team last fall, Faldo has to be enjoying the positive ink for Roco Ki.

Travel + Leisure Lists The Best Golf Wines

I've written up a lot of the celebrity wines as they have come up but I have never seen a tasting of golf wines before. Unlike some celebs who randomly attach their names to anything for a little cash, the golfers on the whole seem to be pretty involved in the winemaking process (the jury is still out on John Daly's wine project). Ray Isle from Travel + Leisure took on the task of tasting the wines associated with golfers and with the PGA tour. The best of the batch according to Isle is the Greg Norman Estates Reserve Shiraz 2000 which received 93 points for its rich blackberry flavors.

Nick Faldo Wine

Add another golfer to the list of celebrity winemakers that includes such legends as Greg Norman and Ernie Els. Nick Faldo's wine line was launched in 2000 and is made by the Katnook Estate in Australia. There are four wines, a Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Shiraz and a sparkling Shiraz which are all made of estate-grown fruit. Faldo is less hands-on than some of the other wine celebs, he leaves the actually winemaking to the experienced hands at Katnook. The Cabernet and the Shiraz have received good marks but I'm most curious about the sparkling Shiraz which is the newest wine in the range. The wines sell for around $22.
