Cigar Review: The De La Concha Grand Reserve

I have a soft spot for the De La Concha Grand Reserve. Manufactured by Pepin Garcia, it came out in 2003, within roughly a month of the master roller's other creation, the Tatuaje, hit the streets. Both sticks are similar in taste and construction, though the Grand Reserve, which is the house cigar for the tobacconist with which it shares a name, isn't quite as heavy as its cousin. This is my regular, daily cigar and has been since I discovered it, at about the time it came to market.

The Grand Reserve is the first private label cigar created by Pepin Garcia. It is fully Nicaraguan – binder, wrapper and filler – and consequently delivers a bold experience. Momentum gathers through the first third of the Grand Reserve, giving way to a middle third that is a bit peppery with some hefty earth tones. The cigar ends strong but leaves little aftertaste. It generally burns evenly and holds up well against the elements (I smoked one in the snowstorm that hit New York over the weekend).

When you smoke the Grand Reserve, there's no doubt that it's a Pepin product. When I'm away from home (you can only get this cigar in New York), I usually smoke a Tatuaje, as it's quite close.

Torano Cigars Celebrate 90 Years With A Special Cigar

The Toraño family is celebrating 90 years in the cigar business with the limited-edition Noventa cigar. The cigars are made from five-year-old Nicaraguan tobacco from their farms in Nicaragua. The cigars are aged in reserve until they reach their peak and have a wrapper and binder of Habano Nicaragua with a filler of Pueblo Nuevo, Esteli, Jalapa and Condega (Nicaraguan Regions).

Cigar Aficionado reports that Toraño had a big incentive for retailers to order the cigars, they offered the first 200 accounts a large, custom-made display humidor. The humidor was made in collaboration with designer Michael Giordano of Quality Importers and has a top glass portion to display three boxes of Noventa. The middle portion has three lockable drawers that hold 25 cigars in individual slats and the bottom portion is a storage cabinet that can hold up to 14 cigar boxes. Prices for the Noventa cigars start at around $10 each.

Morgan's Rock Hacienda and Ecolodge

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

A former Sandinista training ground in Nicaragua is now a luxury eco-resort. A review in the Miami Herald brought my attention to the Morgan's Rock Hacienda and Ecolodge which is an enclave of 15 bungalows each with a king size bed, sofa bed and a private deck with a day bed. The eco-friendly resort is run by solar power and has handmade furniture. It's not quite roughing it but there is no air conditioning. The resort has a pool overlooking the bay and offers hikes through the dry tropical forest. Their honeymoon package, which includes five nights of lodging and all meals, costs $2,700 during the high season.
