Luxury Hudson Hotel NYC Offers Gourmet Cafeteria Trays

Filed under: Dining, Luxury Travel & Hotels

Cafeteria Tray at Hudson Hotel
Hudson Hotel
is a swanky property near NYC's famous Columbus Circle with a cool-kids vibe.

The youthful swagger of Hudson Hotel is achieved by an unusual theme; the hotel is made to feel somewhat like a college dorm -- but don't discount it yet; this is basically the idea of a dorm, blown up into a super-concept with common areas, a library and long escalator rides, as well as Hudson Hall, a bar/restaurant serving gourmet cafeteria trays.

You read that right. Hudson Hall is a quirky bar and restaurant reminiscent of an Ivy League mess hall (on drugs), serving breakfast, lunch and dinner at their long tables and Alice-in-Wonderland-esque chairs beneath panoramic video screens. You head up to the kitchen island, which is decorated with antique books, in the center of the bar, get a red cafeteria tray, and pick out your meal. Your server will charge you based on the items they spot on your tray.

If you happen to sit at the bar, you will be probably be pressured into doing shots -- ah, college. Check out more photos of Hudson Hall and Hudson Hotel:

Trump SoHo Gets Official Opening Date

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

We've been following the progress of Trump SoHo since way back in 2006 and now the hotel component of the project at 246 Spring Street has an opening date. The hotel will open on April 9. The 46-story silver-glass building is a 391-unit hotel and condominium building.

As the NY Times mentioned last month, owners in the project are only allowed to use their units for under 120 days a year and no more than 29 consecutive days. The idea is that most buyers are using their condos as second or third residences. The units are being sold outright at over one million for a studio and must be rented out for the rest of the time. The reason for the odd living arrangement is that the building is in a manufacturing zone which is zoned for hotels and not residences.

The hotel has enviable views of the city's spectacular skyline, the Hudson River, Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building and the rooms and suites have floor-to-ceiling windows. High end appurtenances include furnishings by Fendi Casa and custom bedding by Bellino. The hotel also has a heated pool with private cabanas and an adjacent bar, a spa that includes a hammam and Quattro Gastronomia Italiana, an Italian restaurant that also offers room service. The Bazaar lounge is the place for nightlife and a library stocked with art and design books by Taschen will offer a cozy place to relax. Promotional rates start at $389 per night.

The Surrey Hotel Plans Grand Re-Opening

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

One of Manhattan's hotels has gotten a refresh. The Surrey is scheduled to open on November 1 after an over $60 million gut renovation by architect and interior designer Lauren Rottet. Rottet has custom designed every furnishing in the hotel from Art0Deco-recalling drawer knobs to mosaic tile floors. The result is a hotel that is meant to give the guests the feeling of staying in a Beaux-Arts-designed residential townhouse, refined for modern times. The Art Deco-inspired elements like Bardiglio gray marble floors, French limestone walls and archways, and a faux skylight in the lobby are juxtaposed with modern twists like the lobby's Oriental rug rendered in mosaic tile and a front desk made of polished nickel and hand-tooled leather. Contemporary art including photographs by Jenny Holzer, a collage by Gabi Trinkaus and an interactive video by William Kentridge add to the classic-meets-modern feel.

There are 190 rooms with 30 suites, including a Presidential and a Penthouse Suite. Amenities include 32" LCD TVs, Denon iPod docking stations, Duxiana beds, Pratesi robes, Sferra bedding and Laura Tonnato bath amenities. The 1,150-square-foot penthouse has a wrap-around terrace with outdoor living space and direct access to the private rooftop garden while the 4,500-square-foot Presidential suite has a piano, formal dining area, sauna, fireplace and claw-foot tub in a mosaic-tiled niche.

The hotel's new lobby bar, Bar Pleiades, named in homage of the original French restaurant frequented by the art world's elite from 1971-1992. will offer signature cocktails by mixologist Cameron Bogue. Rottet's inspiration for the lobby bar and lounge area was drawn from Coco Chanel. A black lacquered wood box with white lacquer inlay surrounds the bar echoing the look of a Chanel makeup compact. In the lounge an L-shaped banquette is surrounded by white quilted, Chanel handbag-inspired walls.

Rates start at $499 and The Surrey is is offering a grand opening special of a third night for free when you reserve two or more nights.
