Glenn Beck Drops The Price On His New Canaan Home

glenn beckOur friends at Gawker brought my attention to a little real estate lollygagging. It turns out that talk show host Glenn Beck's home in New Canaan, Connecticut has been on the market for a year with no sale in sight. He bought the six-bedroom, eight-bathroom mansion for $4.2 million in 2005 and first listed it for $4.9 million. The price later dropped to $3.9 million and now sits at $3.65 million.

The six-bedroom home on 6.8 acres is pretty much a New England traditional home. The only room that seem uniquely Beck is his home office with a phalanx of computer monitors on the desk, a pair of flatscreens on the wall and plenty of historical memorabilia including a framed flag.

Rush Limbaugh had to settle around $2 million less than his asking when he sold his NYC penthouse earlier this year. Beck probably won't have to knock that much off but another price cut probably couldn't hurt.

Chateau Fleur-De-Lis, Estate of the Day

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that JetBlue founder David Neeleman and his wife, Vicki had put their New Canaan, Connecticut home up for sale. The Neelmans spent a year designing the eight-bedroom home which was completed in 2008. The couple has nine children and the home's 13,300 square feet offered plenty of room to roam. The home is also on 3.4 acres with a heated swimming pool on the grounds. There is a large gym with a basketball court and a lower level recreation room that has a fireplace, full kitchen and a theater with a stage. Although this is a newer home it takes many of its design cues from the past with large fireplaces and arched wood beam ceilings. The WSJ says the couple spent more than $17 million on the house but are asking $10.999 million (with Lynne Leonard Realty).

Connecticut's Poshest Private Landscapes

Filed under: Decor, Estates, Green, Books

Twenty-eight of Connecticut's most entrancing private landscapes are featured in a beautiful new book from Monacelli Press. Private Gardens of Connecticut offers a privileged glimpse at the personal oases at the estates of designer Oscar de la Renta, socialite Anne Bass, decorator Bunny Williams and many more. Included are gardens from all across the state, from Greenwich to New Canaan and the coast, many of which have never been professionally photographed. A variety of styles is represented from formal to small, contemporary, wild, and old fashioned. Some, like de la Renta's (on the cover above) are grand in scale and tended by an army of skilled professionals, others modest and easily kept, but all alluring and extremely enviable. Throughout the oversized volume author Jane Garmey recounts the story of the creation of the leafy retreats while John Hall's lavish photographs of sumptuous flowers and luxuriant foliage make them leap off the page.

Wisteria Hill, Estate of the Day

Wisteria Hill in New Canaan, Connecticut is a 1910 estate drenched in genteel charm. The large home sits on 8.66 acres that include landscaping that appears straight out of a garden magazine. The home is out of the pages of Architectural Digest. A particularly charming detail is the white and blue tile fireplace surround in the breakfast room. Often window treatments give me the vapors, but in this case, the vibrant window shades offer a nice pop of color in this very elegant home. There is a two-bedroom guest house over the large garage. This home is listed at $11.2 million.

Edward Durrell Stone House, Estate of the Day

Modern in the 1950s and 1960s and modern now mean two entirely different things. Case in point, this home built by famed architect Edward Durell Stone in New Canaan, Connecticut in 1959. This peaked roof mid-century modern went through a major restoration in 2006/07. The 4400 square foot home now has a new Snaidero kitchen and new bathrooms with plenty of stone and those glass bowl sinks that are currently so popular. The home has four bedrooms and there are 12 pyramid skylights total. The estate also includes a reflecting pool and a home theater. My question for you is whether or not the restoration fits the home. While I think the kitchen is a match, the bathrooms seem a bit too au courant rather than classic modern. This estate is listed at $4.9 million.

The great room has church-like architecture including soaring arches, a forty foot ceiling, massive fireplace and a minstrel's balcony. The home is listed at $12.5 million.
